These texts are analysed by the author within the historical framework of their period, so that the man’s personality and work may be accurately evaluated from a fresh viewpoint. More specifically, the author conducts a research on the tombstone of Dimitrios Tsamis Karatasos, which he discovered himself at Naoussa, and the octet engraved on it, which is also published here. No full textΘέμα της εργασίας αποτελούν οι οργανώσεις της ελληνικής άκρας (εξωκοινοβουλευτικής) αριστεράς στο διάστημα 1974-1981. Παρουσιάζονται τα κυριότερα ρεύματα στον ακροαριστερό χώρο και βασικά σημεία της πολιτικής τους δράσης. Κυρίως όμως, οι οργανώσεις, μέσω των μελών και των στελεχών που ανήκαν σε αυτές, ερευνώνται σε πολιτισμικό επίπεδο μέσα από την καταγραφή των πρακτικών και της καθημερινότητας που διαμόρφωνε η πολιτική τους ταυτότητα. Έτσι, το ερευνητικό αντικείμενο προσεγγίζεται από δύο κατευθύνσεις: αυτήν της πολιτικής, που λειτουργεί ως πλαίσιο, και αυτήν της πολιτισμικής ιστορίας. Παρακολουθούνται οι μετασχηματισμοί και τα νέα πεδία που αναδύονται στην ελληνική κοινωνία της πρώιμης μεταπολίτευσης. Ακόμη, παρακολουθείται η συγκρότηση της ίδιας της μεταπολιτευτικής αριστεράς, μέσα από τη δημιουργία του αριστερού της άκρου. Παράλληλα, η εργασία εντοπίζει και εξετάζει την αλλαγή των όρων της αριστερής πολιτικοποίησης στο διάστημα 1974- 1981 και την είσοδο πολιτισμικών αιτημάτων και ζητημάτων ταυτότητας στην πολιτική ατζέντα και τις νεανικές διεκδικήσεις. Το ερευνητικό υλικό αποτελείται κυρίως από προφορικές μαρτυρίες μελών και στελεχών των οργανώσεων και από αρχειακές πηγές, όπως έντυπα και προπαγανδιστικό υλικό των οργανώσεων από τις συλλογές των Αρχείων Σύγχρονης Κοινωνικής Ιστορίας. Η εργασία είναι χωρισμένη σε τέσσερα μέρη. Στο πρώτο δίνονται πραγματολογικά στοιχεία για τις οργανώσεις και τα γεγονότα, με άξονα τα οποία παίζουν τον πολιτικό τους ρόλο. Στο δεύτερο μέρος εξετάζονται τα πεδία πολιτισμικών επιρροών της εποχής, με τα οποία τα μέλη των εξωκοινοβουλευτικών οργανώσεων αλληλοεπιδρούν (τέχνες, κίνημα εργοστασιακού συνδικαλισμού, δραστηριότητα φοιτητικού κινήματος, φεμινισμός κ.α.). Το τρίτο και κύριο μέρος της εργασίας αφορά τις πρακτικές πολιτικής οργάνωσης και πολιτισμικής ζωής των μελών των οργανώσεων και τις εγγραφές που η επιτέλεση των πρακτικών αυτών άφησε στη μνήμη τους. Το τέταρτο μέρος της εργασίας περιέχει ερμηνείες και συμπεράσματα. Την εργασία συμπληρώνει παράρτημα όπου αναφέρονται καταλογογραφημένες οι σημαντικότερες οργανώσεις του χώρου της άκρας αριστεράς στην περίοδο ’74-81, συνοδευόμενες από τα ονόματα των ηγετικών τους στελεχών, το ιδεολογικό ρεύμα στο οποίο ανήκαν, τα έντυπά τους και σύντομη εξιστόρηση της πορείας τους.This study centers on the Greek far left in the years between the fall of the military junta (1974) and the rise of socialist party PASOK to power (1981). It depicts the main streams inside the far left and the important incidents of activism. The organizations of the Greek extra parliamentary left are researched from cultural perspective, through the practices and the everyday life of their members. So, the essay’s objective is approached by two angles: The political one, which is used as the wider frame, and the one of cultural history. The paper traces the changes and the emerging social fields during the early stages of the transition to democracy in Greece. The birth of the post-dictatorship left is highlighted, through the making of its far left wing. At the same time this work points out the transformation of the terms of left wing left and the emergence of cultural issues in the political agenda and in youth claims. The paper draws upon testimonials from members and cadres of the far left organizations and upon newspapers and fanzines issued for purposes of propaganda. The files of the Archives of Contemporary Social History (ASKI) collections, are the main source of the material. The essay consists of four parts: the first will provide the reader with details on the radical left organizations and the incidents through which they came into play in the political status quo. The second part highlights the fields of cultural influences of the era (arts, student movement, factory syndicalism, feminist movement, etc), with which the members of the organizations interact. The third - and main - part, deals with political activism and cultural practices of the groups, as well as with the effect these practices had in their groups members' memories. The final part of the essay consists both of interpretations and conclusions. The reader can find attached with the paper an appendix, cataloguing the most prominent organizations at the time, along with (for each respectively) - names of the leading cadres, - ideological streams, to which they belonged, - newspapers and - a short background stor

The river Kifisos, an urban history of natural environment
No full textThis thesis is a work of social history, which uses the multiple transformations of an urban river as a field for observing change. Its central research question is how the changes of the Kifisos River affected the people living along its banks—their attitude toward the natural environment and the city itself—and, conversely, how shifts in people's consciousness altered their stance toward Athens’s largest river. Another key research pillar of the present study is the evolution of the relationship between the natural environment and human activity. Observing the transformation of Athens from a provincial town into the capital of a Western state, the research examines the changes in riverside activities such as irrigation, habitation, labor, and productive uses. The study also explores the urbanization of Attica’s natural landscape as a further field of inquiry into the environment–human activity nexus. This complex process is observed along the banks of the Kifisos River, and through this observation, the work formulates social and cultural questions related to changes in how authorities dealt with the river, how diverse populations settling in the capital perceived it, and how the residents of Athens shaped their urban identity. More broadly, the case of the Kifisos and its history reflects changes in the city itself, in the urban way of life, in how Athenians perceived the natural environment, and in their interactions with it. This thesis is a synthetic social history that employs more than just the classical tools of social history.Η προκειμένη εργασία είναι μια εργασία κοινωνικής ιστορίας, η οποία χρησιμοποιεί ως πεδίο παρατήρησης της μεταβολής τις πολλαπλές αλλαγές ενός αστικού ποταμού. Βασικό της επιστημονικό ερώτημα είναι το πώς οι αλλαγές του ποταμού Κηφισού επηρέασαν τους ανθρώπους στις όχθες του, την στάση τους απέναντι στο φυσικό περιβάλλον και την ίδια την πόλη, αλλά και αντίστροφα-το πώς η μεταβολή στη συνείδηση των ανθρώπων άλλαζε τη στάση τους έναντι του μεγαλύτερου ποταμού της Αθήνας. Η εξέλιξη της σχέσης του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος με την ανθρώπινη δραστηριότητα είναι ένα ακόμη ερευνητικός πυλώνας της παρούσας εργασίας: Βλέποντας τον μετασχηματισμό της Αθήνας από επαρχιακή κωμόπολη σε πρωτεύουσα ενός δυτικού κράτους ο υποψήφιος παρατηρεί τις αλλαγές στην παρόχθια δραστηριότητα, όπως η άρδευση, η κατοίκηση, η εργασία και οι παραγωγικές χρήσεις. Ένα ακόμη ερευνητικό πεδίο της σχέσης περιβάλλοντος-ανθρώπινης δραστηριότητας που αξιοποιεί η εργασία είναι η διαδικασία αστικοποίησης της αττικής φύσης, η οποία αποτελεί πολυσχιδή διαδικασία. Παρατηρείται αυτή η διαδικασία στις όχθες του ποταμού Κηφισού και μέσα από αυτή την παρατήρηση διατυπώνονται κοινωνικά και πολιτισμικά ερωτήματα, που σχετίζονται με τις αλλαγές στην αντιμετώπιση του ποταμού εκ μέρους των αρχών, με το πώς τον αντιλαμβάνονται οι ποικιλόμορφοι πληθυσμοί που εγκαθίστανται στην πρωτεύουσα και με το πώς οι κάτοικοι της Αθήνας συγκρότησαν την αστική τους ταυτότητα. Συνολικότερα, στην περίπτωση του αττικού Κηφισού και της ιστορίας του παρατηρούνται μεταβολές στην πόλη, τον αστικό τρόπο ζωής, στο πώς αντιλαμβάνονταν οι άνθρωποι της Αθήνας το φυσικό περιβάλλον και στις αλληλεπιδράσεις μαζί του. Η παρούσα εργασία αποτελεί μια συνθετική κοινωνική ιστορία που χρησιμοποιεί περισσότερα από τα κλασσικά εργαλεία της κοινωνικής ιστορίας
The Exemplary Life of Dimitrios Vikelas (1835-1908)
No full textThis paper describes the "satisfying curve" of Dimitrios Vikelas' life journey, starting from Syros in 1835, moving via Constantinople, Odessa, and Syros again, to London, Paris and finally Athens. It explores Vikelas' multiple aspects, as merchant, writer, traveller, lecturer and essayist, Olympic founder, educationalist, book collector and philanthropist, all of which were united in the public-spirited man of letters (logios). It sets Vikelas in the context of the Greek commercial diaspora, the world of the London expatriate Greek community, and the dynamic society of late nineteenth-century Athens, beginning in the 1870s to act as a magnet to Greek expatriates. The author stresses two qualities of Vikelas: his belief in the idea of a progressive Greek state marked by advances in education, culture, tourism and standards of public life; and the self-awareness and experience which inform his autobiographical writings, not only his memoir My Life but also his last such work, The War of 1897
