Interview with Randy Stoecker, author, Liberating Service Learning and the Rest of Higher Education Civic Engagement
It’s common for colleges in the U.S. to have service learning programs of one kind or another. These are sometimes criticized as being liberal or even radical endeavors — especially if “social justice” language is employed. But what if these are, in fact, conservative programs at their heart, ones that, in the context of the corporatized university, are furthering the neoliberal project and inhibiting the development of better social welfare policies? Lunar Surface Studies: Multi-Wavelength Analysis and Methods
The author has granted permission for their work to be available to the general public.The Moon remains the one of the most scientifically valuable sites in our solar system. As we start a new age in lunar exploration, we must examine lunar surface through multiple lenses, and collaborate across scientific disciplines to do new and robust science. Using far-ultraviolet (57-197 nm) data provided by The Lyman Alpha Mapping Project (LAMP) onboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, this work improves data pipelines, while also creating new far ultraviolet (far-UV) data products for the planetary science community. LAMP far-UV data identified Aristarchus crater as having a high Off-band (155-184 nm) to On-band (130-155 nm) albedo (Off/On) ratio, providing new insight to the mineral composition of the area. We investigate four well characterized regions of interest around Aristarchus crater, and we compare Off/On band ratios at Aristarchus crater to laboratory-derived ratios of several endmembers such as anorthite and olivine. We further analyze LAMP far-UV spectra alongside near-infrared (near-IR) spectra from the Moon Mineral Mapper (M3) onboard Chandrayaan-1 to characterize the mineralogy in several regions of interest. We find that LAMP Off/On band ratios are able to distinguish between plagioclase feldspars and minerals such as quartz and mafic dominated compositions. The LAMP Off/On band ratios at Aristarchus are higher than previously reported ratios for plagioclase rich regions, suggesting the composition is unique to Aristarchus. Building off of this work, we will examine pyroclastic dark mantling deposits (DMDs) at J. Herschel crater with LAMP observations and further our understanding of the volcanic history of the area and the Moon.Physics and Astronom
Reconsidering Randy Shilts: examining the reportage of America's AIDS chronicler
2013 Fall.Includes bibliographical references.The role of openly-gay reporter and author Randy Shilts (1951-1994) is examined related to his use of journalistic practices and places him on a continuum of traditional reporting roles as considered in the context of twentieth century philosophers Walter Lippmann and John Dewey. Reporter functions demonstrated by Shilts are examined, including those dictated by expectations of either strong journalistic influence over society and media consumers, or those more aligned with democratic practices where education and participation emphasize strong roles for society and media consumers. Using a biographical approach including 17 primary source interviews of former colleagues, critics, sources and family/friends, the examination of Shilts work as both a reporter and noted author is presented as being heavily influenced by his forthcoming attitudes about disclosure of his sexual orientation from the start of his career and his desire to explain or unpack aspects of gay culture, and ultimately the AIDS crisis, to heterosexual audiences. Careful examination of the posthumous critique of Shilts' work - including his construction of Patient Zero - is undertaken. The study concludes that Shilts fully engaged a Lippmann-esque approach embodied in an authoritarian role for journalism that sought to change the world in which it was offered, and did so perhaps most influentially during the earliest days of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in America

People spend a considerable portion of time engaged in a bioneurological state termed sleep. Sleep loss impacts physiological, cognitive, and mood functioning. This study examined whether occupational therapists view sleep as an occupation and the extent to which they assess sleep precursors and sleep dysfunction.

The affects on Titan atmospheric modeling by variable molecular reaction rates

To download, navigate to Log In in the top right-hand corner of this screen, then select Log in with my UTSA ID.The main effort of this thesis is to study the production and loss of molecular ions in the ionosphere of Saturn's largest moon Titan. Titan's atmosphere is subject to complex photochemical processes that can lead to the production of higher order hydrocarbons and nitriles. Ion-molecule chemistry plays an important role in this process but remains poorly understood. In particular, current models that simulate the photochemistry of Titan's atmosphere overpredict the abundance of the ionosphere's main ions suggesting a flaw in the modeling process. The objective of this thesis is to determine which reactions are most important for production and loss of the two primary ions, C2H5+ and HCNH+, and what is the impact of uncertainty in the reaction rates on the production and loss of these ions. In reviewing the literature, there is a contention about what reactions are really necessary to illuminate what is occurring in the atmosphere. Approximately seven hundred reactions are included in the model used in this discussion (INT16). This paper studies what reactions are fundamental to the atmospheric processes in Titan's upper atmosphere, and also to the reactions that occur in the lower bounds of the ionosphere which are used to set a baseline molecular density for all species, and reflects what is expected at those altitudes on Titan. This research was conducted through evaluating reaction rates and cross sections available in the scientific literature and through conducting model simulations of the photochemistry in Titan's atmosphere under a range of conditions constrained by the literature source. The objective of this study is to determine the dependence of ion densities of C2H5+ and HCNH+ on the uncertainty in the reaction rates that involve these two ions in Titan's atmosphere.Physics and Astronom
