No full textNonostante le forti mutilazioni e la dispersione, l’epistolario di Giuseppe Colucci, poliedrica figura di sacerdote ed erudito marchigiano del XVIII secolo, costituisce una fonte preziosa per meglio definirne il pensiero, l’attività multiforme e la rete di relazioni. Il carteggio con Girolamo Tiraboschi si svolge dal 1784 al 1792 per gran parte in parallelo con la composizione del primo volume delle Antichità picene – l’opera più significativa del Colucci – e si incentra sulle osservazioni e sui consigli del Tiraboschi, in parte riferiti e discussi nella Prefazione. L’ampia trama di informazioni esalta il valore epitestuale delle trentuno lettere inedite raccolte nel ms. It. 873 (=alfa.L.8.16) della Biblioteca Estense di Modena. Il saggio intende evidenziarne gli aspetti salienti.Despite extensive damage and dispersion, the letters of Giuseppe Colucci, polymath and erudite priest who lived in the Marche during the Eighteenth century, are a valuable source for assessing his thought, various activities and his relation with correspondents. The correspondence with Girolamo Tiraboschi is contemporary with the writing of the first volume of Antichità Picene and focuses on the observations and recommendations of Tiraboschi, which in part are discussed in the Preface. The extensive information contained in the thirty-one unedited letters collected in ms. It. 873 (=alfa. No full textLa fervida stagione culturale che caratterizzò la provincia di Terra di Lavoro all’indomani dell’Unità ebbe, tra
le sue cifre distintive, un rinnovato interesse per l’antichità classica. Una vivida testimonianza di questo clima
proviene da tre inedite lettere scritte da Giuseppe Colucci, Prefetto di Caserta dal 1867 al 1872, al celebre studioso
tedesco Theodor Mommsen, che visitò i territori della provincia nel corso delle sue ricerche sulle antiche
iscrizioni. Affiora, da questi documenti epistolari, quell’impegno per la riscoperta e la tutela dei resti materiali,
i vestigia antiquitatis disseminati in ogni angolo del territorio, che aveva ispirato iniziative come l’istituzione
della Commissione Conservatrice dei Monumenti ed Oggetti di Antichità e Belle Arti, di cui Colucci fu il primo
presidente, e la fondazione del Museo Provinciale Campano a Capua. Nelle parole di Colucci, poi, si coglie l’eco
del ben noto dibattito contemporaneo sull’insegnamento delle lingue classiche, sorto a seguito dell’estensione

Alloy composition of the swabian denarii in the kingdom of Sicily (1194-1266). Comparison of analysis techniques, Part I
No full textOur knowledge on the composition of the Swabian denarii in the Kingdom of Sicily (1194-1266) is still based on A. Sambon's determination performed at the beginning of 20th century and it is limited to reign of Frederick II. No analyses were carried out for Henry VI's coinage or for those of the three last Swabian kings (Conrad I, Conrad II [Corradino] and Manfredi). As Henry VI's imperial denarius equalled 1⁄2 milanese denarius (mezzano), which had a weight of 1 gram and an alloy of 500‰ Ag, it was assumed that a one-gram Sicilian denarius should have an alloy of 250‰ Ag. No data on the three last Swabian kings are available; it has been assumed that the denarii's alloy equaled Frederick's last emission of 1249. This study aims at determining the composition of the denarius alloy and its devaluations, by comparing two different analytical methods in order to guarantee reliable results.
Two different techniques were used for the measurements: Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). LIBS is a microdestructive superficial technique which at certain condition can be used to obtain volumetric data by exploiting the ablation effect which each laser pulse produces on the object surface. The X-Ray fluorescence, on the other hand, a non-destructive volumetric technique, which is however largely influenced by compositional inhomogeneity between the surface and the volume of the object.
After a first set of measurements, the results obtained with the micro-LIBS at the University of Bari were compared with those obtained with Portable XRF at the CNR Pisa. The LIBS measurements were optimized so that the size of the micro-crater produced by the laser on the surface of the coins was minimised. The results were compared and showed good degree of similarity in the silver concentration determined by the two instruments. This outcome allowed to continue the analysis with XRF only, which has the advantage of being a non-destructive tool.
This will discuss the results obtained on the whole collection and will demonstrate that the techniques employed to determine the denarii's silver content are not influenced by the surface enriched layer, which is typical of coins dating back to that historical period
