Acceptance and Use of Digital Payments by Consumers: An Empirical Analysis in Italy

    No full text
Framing of the research. Several governments have introduced policies to foster the usage of digital payments by consumers, with the goal of curbing tax evasion. Nevertheless, cash is still predominant. This raises questions about the factors that can promote the usage of digital payments by consumers. Purpose of the paper. This paper aims at investigating the factors affecting the adoption of digital payments by Italian consumers, extending the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology in a consumer context (UTAUT2) with three constructs that are relevant when analyzing this topic, namely the role of government incentives, the concerns related to privacy, and the degree of aversion towards tax evasion. Methodology. To empirically assess the proposed research model, we gathered data in Italy through a web-based survey and analyzed them using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling. Results. Findings confirm the UTAUT2 model, except for price value, which is found to be insignificant. Government incentives and tax evasion aversion have a significant positive impact on the behavioral intention to adopt digital payments, whereas privacy concerns have a significant negative effect. Research limitations. The main limitation of this study concerns data gathering, as it was conducted using the Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing methodology, which targets consumers that are already familiar with digital instruments. Practical implications. The paper highlights the factors that both digital payment providers and public institutions may leverage to foster the adoption of digital payments by consumers. Originality of the paper. To the best of our knowledge, this study is unique as it examines the adoption of digital payments by Italian consumers, extending the framework to prepaid, credit, and debit cards, instead of considering mobile payments alone

SUMMARY. — Francesco Maria Spinelli's work, written in response to Paolo Mattia Doria's attack, was part of the debate of the 1730s in Naples over the Spinozistic consequences of Cartesian philosophy. Spinelli was not content to rebut Doria's attack, but went on to prove to the ecclesiastical censor that Cartesian philosophy is indeed Christian. In an effort to confer objectivity on his arguments, Spinelli read Descartes and Spinoza through the intermediary of Suárez.RÉSUMÉ. Belgioioso Giulia. L’isola di Prospero. La Grecia di Lawrence Durrell

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the image of Greece emerging from Lawrence Durrell’s travel writings. In particular, the analysis will focus on his works dedicated to Corfu. In line with the British literary tradition, Durrell perceived the Mediterranean Sea as an opportunity to escape from the English death that affected his time. Nevertheless, he is not driven by a mere interest in archaeology or history, but he looks for places of an artistic nature where “to put down roots and create” (Landscape and Character, 1960). Durrell was born in India, as a “child of the jungle” (From the Elephant’s Back, 1982), thus his thinking is colored by the fact that he is a colonial. In England, where he moved at the age of twelve to attend established schools, he felt like an outsider. Hence, his journey to Greece, far from being a literary topos, is a sort of voluntary exile, a quest for a lost home. In 1935 Durrell persuaded his family to move to Corfu, safe in the knowledge that he could have regained a contact with nature and developed his literary talent in a place that offers “all the charms of seclusion”. This experience gave birth to the first of his island portraits, Prospero’s Cell (1945), which relates some of the events of those years adopting the fictitious technique of the diary. Actually, it was written in Alexandria, during the Second World War, as we learn from the epilogue. Also his youngest brother, Gerald, wrote an account of that period, from the point of view of the scientist: the novel My Family and Other Animals (1956), conceived as a sort of “natural history”, combines fact and fiction harmoniously, juxtaposing landscape descriptions – especially animals and plants – and lively family life episodes. Lawrence Durrell’s portrait in the novel is close to reality, since his brother depicts him as an intellectual surrounded with books and points out ironically his restlessness, which leads him to move house frequently. Prospero’s Cell has been defined a landscape with characters. Greece is perceived as a mysterious crystal that should be penetrated to ensure self-discovery, as a country with no geographical borders, which becomes the metaphor of a state of mind. As a late Modernist, Durrell expands chronology and describes the landscape using an impressionistic technique: he focuses on colors, on the magic of Greek light, and on sounds and voices that create a hypnotic atmosphere. Corfu acquires a dreamlike dimension that recalls the description of Prospero’s island in The Tempest by William Shakespeare. Greece is rich in literary and mythological echoes that scholars and archaeologists try to recognize, in a vain attempt to trace the ancient sites and figures – take Odysseus for example. It is an unchanging land of “stone fables” (Delphi, 1965), where it is not possible to distinguish between truth and imagination, since legend is an intimate part of daily life, and people and their scenery retain a kind of mythological form. This dichotomy between history and conjecture is at the heart of Prospero’s Cell. Lawrence Durrell will offer a more complete itinerary across the Ionian Sea in The Greek Islands (1978), hoping that a traveler may follow in his footsteps and, under the spell of Kardaki spring, may return to Corfu in the future

The Influence of Insecure Romantic Attachment on Generativity

    No full text
Existing research concerning the development of generativity, the capacity to provide care and guidance to future generations, has primarily focused on the role of sociodemographic variables. However, one important feature that might be of importance for the study of generativity is insecure romantic attachment, given its influence on how people establish relationships with others. Still, the role of the two dimensions of insecure romantic attachment (i.e., anxiety and avoidance) on the most studied aspects of generativity (i.e., generative concern and generative acts) remains largely underexplored. Therefore, the present study investigates what contributes to generativity by exploring the role of sociodemographic features (i.e., age, gender, having children, years of education) and above all the two dimensions of insecure romantic attachment on generative concern and acts. A sample of 427 adults (age range: 25–65 years old) completed an online survey including romantic attachment and generativity measures. Afterwards, correlational and regression analyses were conducted to explore the data. Results showed that years of education positively predicted generative concern, whereas both anxiety and avoidance negatively predicted it. Yet, no sociodemographic feature nor dimension of insecure romantic attachment predicted generative acts. Thus, insecure romantic attachment could be a useful key to understanding generative concern. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature

Can tax evasion be reduced by fostering cashless payments? A systematic literature review

    No full text
Tax evasion is a crucial issue worldwide. It is facilitated by the cash economy, as cashis untraceable and allows individuals to easily conceal the history of their transac-tions, thus facilitating underreporting. Conversely, cashless payments are traceable, which makes evasion more difficult. Despite increasing interest from policy makers, the literature on the impact of payment instruments on tax evasion is still scarce andfragmented. This paper therefore presents a systematic literature review on the topic.More specifically, we analyze 26 papers published in peer-reviewed journals, whichdocument that cash has a positive impact on tax evasion and the shadow economywhereas card payments foster value added tax compliance. Other topics, such as theimpact of digital wallets and central bank digital currencies on tax evasion, prove toCorresponding author: G. Finally, we discuss which policies can be introduced by policymakers to reduce tax evasion, and we provide suggestions for future research
