I silos granari.

    No full text
The essay aims to present the category of grain silos as industrial heritage, highlighting the characteristics that make their reuse particularly difficult. International cases of adaptive reuse are then analysed, highlighting both how the aforementioned difficulties have prevented their effective reuse but also presenting recovery and reuse strategies that maintain the structural and historical characteristics of the grain silo typology, to varying degrees of success

Venezia 1964 / Nizhny Tagil 2003.

At the moment of the drafting of the Venice Charter, industrial heritage protection was in its early stages, and required no specific guiding principles. Over time, additions like the 1990 Charter on the Protection and Management of Archeological Heritage, and the 1999 Charter on the Built Vernacular Heritage, emerged within ICOMOS. Post-Venice Charter adoption, industrial divestment propelled industrial heritge into focus. The 2003 Nizhny Tagil Charter by TICCIH applied the Venice Charter principles to industrial heritage, and was followed in 2011 by the ICOMOS - TICCIH Dublin Principles. This contribution traces the evolution from Venice to Nizhny tagil, exploring ongoing discussions amid both charters' significant anniversaries and, in particular, the challenges faced today by the principles of both Nizhny Tagil and the Venice Charter in relation to industrial heritage

The “Covo degli Arditi” was the ambulance gallery of the asylum complex in Potenza. The asylum, designed by L. Quaroni and M. Piacentini, was never used as such. The gallery hosted the Fascist Revolution Museum and it’s now abandoned. This contribution wants to reconstruct the “Covo degli Arditi”’s history, and to try and propose new interpretations for its conservation and reuse, although it bears this double, difficult memory of being both an asylum and a remnant of the Fascist years

Hydroelectric heritage in Southern Italy: lake Nitti and the Muro Lucano hydroelectric plant. A case study

    No full text
The chapter explores the double fragility of Southern Italy’s hydroelectric heritage using the Muro Lucano Hydroelectric Plant and Lake Nitti as a case study. From the start of the 20th century, through Francesco Nitti's advocacy for nationalizing water resources and Angelo Omodeo’s analysis of the hydrogeological challenges of the water landscape in the Mezzogiorno, this contribution highlights the peculiar condition of hydropower infrastructure in Muro Lucano, through the lens of Nitti's Special Law for Basilicata and the post-World War II hydroelectric power decline due to technological shifts and the Vajont tragedy. The chapter datails the Muro Lucano Dam case study construction challenges, decline, and socio-economic impact, and it concludes advocating for its protection and integration into regional development

The so-called Covo degli Arditi was the ambulance gallery of the asylum complex in Potenza. The asylum, designed by L. Quaroni and M. Piacentini, was never used as such. The gallery hosted the Fascist Revolution Museum and is now abandoned. The contribution reconstructs the “Covo degli Arditi”s history, through the years of abandonment and until the video projection mapping event that took place on its façade, in a bottom-up process that signals the interest of the population in the abandoned building

The Occitan valleys of Cuneo, Italy, present an interesting case study for the valorisation of the hydroelectric heritage. The development of tourist infrastructures has left these valleys behind, and today, they're depopulated and under-appreciated, although they're full of natural and cultural resources, including hydroelectric heritage. Many different itineraries cross this area: the Via Alpina, the GTA, the Sentiero Italia and many other shorter trails. These routes can be used to create new itineraries that require minimal interventions to valorise the hydroelectric heritage of these valleyse and merge naturalistic and cultural tourism to create a positive feedback for the territory

Architecture is inherently subject to change. Designed to meet functional needs, it must adapt to evolving user re-quirements and changing regulations. Preserving architecture means managing change without compromising its integrity or cultural values, balancing the replacement of the parts with the preservation of authenticity. While the conservation of 20th century heritage has long been debated, outcomes often fail to «envision changes without be-traying the legacy and spirit» of that architecture. To avoid distortion, «the demands of both conservation and change must be served simultaneously» , respecting the building’s architectural, functional, and material specifici-ties. This paper examines two notable cases: the Burgo paper mill in Mantua, designed by Pier Luigi Nervi (1961-1964), whose restoration won the 2021 DOCOMOMO Rehabilitation Award; and the Burgo administrative offices in San Mauro Torinese (Torino), designed by Oscar Niemeyer (1978-81), now undergoing functional revitalization

The Maira Valley is part of the Occitan valleys in the Province of Cuneo, and is characterized by a rich architectural, cultural and landscape heritage, which the inhabitants know how to effectively enhance for the redevelopment of the territories. Dronero, the town located right at the entrance of the valley, often organizes cultural initiatives thanks to local associations, such as the “Un Borgo Ritrovato” event organized by the “Dronero Cult” Association. However, the hydroelectric heritage is not included in these activities, although in the valley there are four historical power plants, the decommissioned Combamala dam and several more recently constructed plants. A few cultural and communication initiatives have been carried out in the past, such as the photographic exhibition “100 Years of Energy in the Maira Valley – Hydroelectric Between Past and Future”. Furthermore, the public-private company Maira S.p.A. operating in the valley organizes once a year visits to a hydroelectric power plant and manages, in coordination with the Comunità Montana Valli Grana and Maira, an Info-point on water resource management. The implementation of the educational and cultural offer through the valorisation of the hydroelectric heritage and the creation of a synergic relationship with other cultural resources and initiatives would contribute to expand the audience of visitors and, at the same time, promote a deeper knowledge of the area among the participants in the activities. Furthermore, the challenges related to climate change and the consequent increasing importance of renewable energy are factors adding relevance to this heritage, which could successfully become a catalyst for initiatives aimed at promoting environmental education and awareness
