Reducing DUI-related collisions: evaluating the effectiveness of enhanced DUI enforcement
The purpose of this study was to determine whether a correlation existed between a city???s DUI rate and DUI Crash rate. The author???s hypothesis was that an increase in DUI arrest rate would lead to a decrease in DUI-related collisions. Arrest data, crash data and population data were drawn from RAND California for all cities in the State of California for the years of 2000 to 2009. This data were utilized to create variables for the percent change in DUI arrest rate and DUI crash rate from the first half of the decade (2000 to 2004) to the second half of the decade (2005-2009). These percent change variables were correlated using a Pearson???s bi-variate analysis. The results showed a weak positive correlation between the percent change in DUI arrest rates and DUI crash rates. This indicates that as DUI arrests increase, DUI-related crashes increase as well. Due to the limitations of this research model and the resulting weak positive correlation, further research will need to be conducted to determine, with greater certainty, the correlation between enhanced DUI enforcement and DUI-related collisions

The Close Relationship between Large Bowel and Heart: When a Colonic Perforation Mimics an Acute Myocardial Infarction
Colonoscopic perforation is a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of colonoscopy. Its incidence varies in frequency from 0.016% to 0.21% for diagnostic procedures, but may be seen in up to 5% of therapeutic colonoscopies. In case of extraperitoneal perforation, atypical signs and symptoms may develop. The aim of this report is to raise the awareness on the likelihood of rare clinical features of colonoscopic perforation. A 72-year-old male patient with a past medical history of myocardial infarction presented to the emergency department four hours after a screening colonoscopy with polypectomy, complaining of neck pain, retrosternal oppressive chest pain, dyspnea, and rhinolalia. Right chest wall and cervical subcutaneous emphysema, pneumomediastinum, pneumoretroperitoneum, and bilateral subdiaphragmatic free air were reported on the chest and abdominal X-rays. The patient was treated conservatively, with absolute bowel rest, total parental nutrition, and broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics. Awareness of the potentially unusual clinical manifestations of retroperitoneal perforation following colonoscopy is crucial for the correct diagnosis and prompt management of colonoscopic perforation. Conservative treatment may be appropriate in patients with a properly prepared bowel, hemodynamic stability, and no evidence of peritonitis. Surgical treatment should be considered when abdominal or chest pain worsens, and when a systemic inflammatory response arises during the conservative treatment period

Cigarette Smoking as a Predictor of Male DUI Recidivism
This study aimed to investigate the predictors of recidivism in first-time driving under the influence (DUI) offenders, analyzing variables derived from medico-legal and toxicological examinations. The research was structured as a comparative study for the period 2012–2019. DUI offenders with a blood alcohol concentration >0.5 were included in the study. The case group consisted of recidivist offenders, while the comparison group consisted of first-time offenders. Personal data, socioeconomics, and parameters linked to the DUI were compared between the two groups. Significance was determined by chi-square and Mann–Whitney tests. To prevent confounding effects, multivariate binary logistic regression analysis was performed. Our sample encompassed 1678 subjects (196 in the case group, 1482 in the comparison group). Gender, driving license category, education, and tobacco use resulted in significant differences between the groups. In a model including age at DUI, education, and smoking habit as independent variables, higher educational levels (high school, bachelor’s) and older age protected against recidivism, whereas smoking >20 cigarettes/day was an independent risk factor for recidivism. Recidivist offenders have specific characteristics indicating different therapeutic programs and carefulness in driving license regranting. A higher tobacco consumption in recidivists suggests that the use of this substance could influence the risk of DUI for reasons that will need to be explored
Effectiveness of Road Safety Educational Program for Pre-drivers about DUI: Practical Implication of the TPB in Developing New Preventive Program in Slovenia
AbstractMain purpose is to address effectiveness of educational program for pre-drivers regarding driving under influence of alcohol (DUI) or riding with intoxicated driver. Young drivers and participants are at over-average risk in traffic (European Commission, 2012), and DUI is one of major contributing factors (Elliot, 2004). We have designed and developed new road-safety educational program focusing on pre-drivers in high-schools and dealing with DUI taking into account various recommendations and concepts with the integration of different approaches. In the research we have used the Theory of planned behavior (TPB, Ajzen, 1985, 1991; Forward, 2010; Moan, 2013) as a basis of influencing the components of the model. Program has been evaluated with quasi-experimental research, measurements before-after and 1-month follow-up. There were 269 participants included (16 – 18 years old), which attended the integrated intervention program or control group. We have measured TPB components, as well as evaluation of the program. We’ve also measured phase of behavior change in accordance with Trans-theoretical model of change (TTM, Prochaska and DiClemente, 1983; 1999). Results show no significant effect of the intervention program on general attitudes and TPB components through time. There was an improvement regarding the process of change. Also the intervention group better evaluated the program and assessed the effects and satisfaction showing that there are some promising results. In discussion we address possible reasons for such results, as short duration of the program, very high results before the program etc. Practical implications of research are development and adaptation Slovene relevant instruments for measurement of TPB components for adolescents and DUI and to establish effective components of educational program to perform a road safety education with youngsters in high school level
