Finance and investment in the Eurozone

    No full text
This chapter reviews some of the core constraints that have developed in the Eurozone on investment and growth as a result of the shift towards economic liberalism. The chapter also advances some alternative policies for promoting growth and investment. The chapter starts with a review of the impact of financial liberalization on investment and growth in the Eurozone and of the Eurozone fiscal policy stance on investment and growth. In light of this background, Cozzi puts forward some progressive economic policies for growth and investment in the Eurozone

Giovanni Battista Morgagni and his contribution to pediatric surgery

    No full text
Pediatric surgery is a less than a century old surgical specialty. However, early knowledge of human malformations and pediatric surgical conditions dates back to centuries before. One of the main contributors to progress in these fields was Giovanni Battista Morgagni (1682-1771), who also had a substantial weight in the development of future pediatric surgery. With his masterpiece De Sedibus et Causis Morborum per Anatomen Indagatis (On the Seats and Causes of Diseases Investigated by Anatomy) (1761), he set the basis for modern pathology. In this textbook, Morgagni was the first to describe anatomical elements like the trigonum sternocostale dextrum (the Morgagni's foramen), the appendix testis (the Morgagni's hydatid), and the vertical folds of distal rectum (the Morgagni's columns). He was also the first to describe pediatric pathological conditions like epispadia, meconium peritonitis, Crohn's disease, and coarctation of the aorta. Finally, he substantially contributed to the understanding of the pathophysiology of conditions like the vesico-ureteral reflux, the anterior wall defects (gastroschisis/omphalocele), and the spina bifida. For this, it was said of him: "If all the anatomical findings made by Morgagni should bear his name, probably one third of human body would be called Morgagni's." (c) 2008 Elsevier Inc. Making the Case for a Gender-aware, Investment-led Recovery for Europe

    No full text
Using the Cambridge Alphametrics Model (CAM), a structuralist macroeconomic model, this chapter compares and contrasts the economic and social consequences of continuing with business-as-usual austerity policies versus implementing a gender-equitable, investment-led alternative in Europe. The results show that economic growth and increased employment can be achieved simultaneously via the adoption of gender-aware expansionary macroeconomic policies and by gendering government expenditure (ie investing in services that generate female employment and enhance women’s well-being). This chapter argues that such a macroeconomic strategy would lead to substantial gains in job creation for women and men, accelerated growth and reductions in government debts and fiscal deficits

Making the case for a gender-aware, Investment-led recovery for Europe

This chapter traces the roots of the current economic and social situation in Europe, recognising the role played by policy choices that have also led to increasing gender divisions. Given this status quo, the chapter makes the case for an alternative gender-equitable, investment-led recovery. Using a macroeconomic model, the Cambridge Alphametrics Model, the chapter compares and contrasts the economic and social consequences of these two scenarios: business-as-usual and a gender-equitable, investment-led alternative. The results show that the aims of economic growth and increased employment targeted at women can be achieved via the adoption of gender-sensitive expansionary macroeconomic policies. Such a macroeconomic strategy is economically feasible, leading to substantial gains in terms of job creation for both women and men, as well as accelerated growth and reductions in dependency costs, government debts and fiscal deficits. Thus, the recommendations that stem from this analysis are to significantly increase public and private investment in both social and physical infrastructure; and to slowdown the pace of fiscal consolidation

Finance and industrial policy: beyond financial regulation in Europe

    No full text
The 2008 global financial crisis, together with the experience of de-industrialization across Western Europe over the last three decades, has focussed attention on financial regulation and industrial policy. Industry and finance policies have largely been discussed separately, and this book argues that the two should be considered together, in both analysis and policy formulation that deals with critical questions of how finance has intervened in industrial restructuring and how it might better serve the real economy. Moreover, policy debates have paid relatively little attention to the heterogeneous economic structures and growth trajectories of European economies, and the interconnectedness and interdependencies of growth paths that present specific challenges to policy and highlight the need for cooperation across the region. This book brings together leading scholars and policy makers to contribute to policy debates in three ways. First, it includes current discussions of banking policy, regulation, and reform to reassert the need for financial institutions that will back up and finance an industrial policy to revive the European economy. Second, it reviews the role of industrial and investment policy in supporting innovation, creating jobs, and generating sustainable economic growth. Third, it advances alternative policy proposals aimed at generating sustainable economic growth and employment in Europe. Part I analyses the nature of growth, industrial, and economic restructuring in relation to finance in the lead up to the crisis, at regional, national, and sector levels. Part II presents alternative and progressive policy proposals for growth and employment in Europe in light of the analysis presented in Part I

Controlling the Electrochemical Etching of Pores with High Aspect Ratio at the Submicrometer Scale in Silicon

    No full text
The controlled electrochemical etching at high anodic voltage (up to 35 V) of two-dimensional arrays of ordered pores with sub-micrometric diameter (down to 800 nm) at high depths (up to 40 μm) and high density (spacing 1.8 μm), yielding a maximum aspect ratio of 50, using low-doped (resistivity 3-8 Ωcm) n-type silicon is hereby for the first time demonstrated and discussed
