risolvere specifici problemi ambientali, economici e sociali.
dell’ecosistema. Focalizzando poi l’attenzione, in relazione
10
progetto Bioeconomia” in Puglia (MaBiP), quale proposta
The link between Europe and the Mediterranean Area is necessary; this interdependence, which must be based on privileged partnerships, appears to be the foundation to build a common, sustainable and long-term development. The role of agriculture in the establishment of a virtuous mobilization of the above mentioned resources is fundamental due to its capacity to be a key determinant for the promotion of the economies and societies of the area. The Department of Agriculture in Morocco considers a priority the promotion of the national agricultural sector and its integration in the international context; in this direction it has put in place a series of actions to strengthen relations of cooperation with various partners around the world, framed in the context of the Plan Maroc Vert, which is the Government's plan to develop the agricultural sector. The strategy behind the above mentioned plan is designed to allow the agricultural sector an harmonious and dynamic development, balanced, and which takes account of its specificity.
The Binomial Immigration and Agriculture: from Crisis Factors to Innovative Perspectives
The evolution of the international economic scenario, characterized by a strong imbalance between industrialized countries and less developed ones, and within these latter by the persistence of political, religious and ethnic discrimination, has intensified migration flows towards western regions. With particular reference to the Italian scenario, the binomial immigration-agriculture, two dynamic and complex realities, is a pressing challenge for the development of our society. On one hand, the influx of immigrants represents a response to the structural problems of Italian rural areas, such as the aging of the population and rural depopulation; on the other hand, the lack of a coherent immigration policy, based on social inclusion and effective rights protection, reduces these immigrants to a mere "resource" for the persistence of an “unsustainable” production system, one that generates continuous human rights violations and social tensions. In order for an effective shift in methodology to be put in place, a pathway towards systemic innovation should be encouraged, capable of stemming the proliferation of precarious employment, thus promoting the autonomy of agricultural systems and reducing their vulnerability. Starting from a quantitative outline of the phenomenon of immigrants employment in the Italian agricultural sector and from an analysis of
the peculiar characteristics of the same sector, together with the case study of Terraingiusta Report, an in depth reflection is carried on in order to devise and evaluate innovative ways of making a "diagnosis" of social and economic crisis factors. The final aim is the development of a sustainable territorial governance, capable of integrating rural development policies and social inclusion ones, as well as fostering an effective “bottom-up” participation
Agrarian landscapes: from marginal areas to cultural landscapes—paths to sustainable tourism in small villages—the case of Vico Del Gargano in the club of the Borghi più belli d’Italia
The territory of Gargano is recognized for its stunning landscapes and the ecological variety of its natural spaces, both within the boundaries of the National Park and outside, especially in small villages such as Vico del Gargano. The natural heritage is a fundamental vector of tourist attractiveness, almost a real “brand image”. Despite the importance of the territory’s tourism economy, natural resources are often scarcely valued. In order to maintain the level of quality of reception and, at the same time, the environment, the preservation of areas with high ecological value together with the structuring elements of the landscape is essential, while maintaining a dynamic economic activity. Reconciling productivity issues, both in the short and medium-long term, and preservation of biodiversity is not always easy and “obvious”. It is vital to capitalize on the natural wealth of territories to leverage the development of the tourist economy, through concrete actions and policies aimed at accompanying economic actors and enable them to put in place best practices to protect the environment and value biodiversity, all towards the sustainable development of territories. The recovery and preservation of the “traditional” agricultural activities is certainly an economical as well as a socio-cultural issue, and plays a fundamental role in shaping the mentioned agricultural landscapes in such a way as to foster tourism development. As a matter of fact, it is quite difficult to imagine tourists willing to visit big plantations or orchards and tents, which look like “industrial sheds”; the traditional campaigns, the surviving ones, continue to be, as it has always been, ideal places for an authentic experience of rediscovery of values, tastes, smells and “ancient” varieties, of excellent products. All this sort of cultural upheaval is something certainly complex, a sign of a real turning point that is investing every sphere of human knowledge, the recognition of the mentioned landscapes as reservoirs of biodiversity and cultural heritage. This is particularly true and important in the context of small villages, whose fragile wealth of knowledge, adaptive mechanisms, resources that cultural landscapes preserve, all play a strategic role. It is of particular interest to analyse how agricultural landscapes, conceivable as “cultural landscapes”, become an expression of the continuous integration between human activities and natural dynamics; they embed elements of beauty, of naturalness, of scenic quality, that continue to exert strong attraction, thus playing a strong social, cultural and historical role, as well as representing a legacy of knowledge that enables the “modelling” of sustainable farming. The actual challenge of sustainable tourism initiatives is precisely that of bringing economic capital, cultural capital and environmental capital at the same level of importance and consideration. In the context of the Club of the Borghi più belli d’Italia, founded in 2001 and conceived within the Tourism Council of the A.N.C.I. with the aim of enhancing and promoting the great heritage of history, art and culture present in the Small Italian villages, Vico Del Gargano represents a unique treasure of different relevant possibilities to develop an effective sustainable tourism, aimed at reconciling cultural heritage and environment and biodiversity safeguard. As a member of a list of about 280 villages belonging to the Club, all certificated on the basis of a specific regulation, expression of the best Made in Italy and Italian excellence, Vico Del Gargano embeds high potential resources to enhance its great heritage of history, art, culture, environment and traditions, mostly excluded from the traditional flows of visitors and tourists. The present contribution aims at an initial overview of the state of the art concerning landscape analysis. Furthermore, the main scope is to propose a methodological analysis through the use of “landscape ecology” approaches, as well as the creation of innovative paths for an effective “bottom-up” valorization, to be carried out as to involve all the local stakeholders. Numerous small villages in Italy, and Vico Del Gargano as well, are in danger of depopulation and consequent degradation, due to a marginal situation, compared to the economic interests that gravitate around the “mass” tourist and commercial movements. The proposition aims to select a tourist circuit of excellence, as indicated by the mentioned Club, constantly monitored and evaluated, capable of reconciling both architectural and/or natural heritage, a heritage that is appreciated for its urban and architectural quality, as well as for its natural and environmental wealth. Furthermore, the role of the Consortium of Producers of the Borghi più belli d’Italia Ecce Italy brings together the excellent activities of the eno-gastronomy and crafts in the member villages, with particular reference to guided tours and events related to local products (Cf.: https://borghipiubelliditalia.it/category/puglia/). It is vital to foster the creation of ad hoc “routes” to promote local products and enhance biodiversity safeguard. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the present proposition is in strict compliance with the initiative of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities MIBACT, that dedicated the year 2017 to the Borghi and with the “Save Borghi” law (6th October 2017, No. 158), a series of concrete actions, ranging from infrastructural interventions, to digital strategies and accessibility, to corporate policies, aimed at revitalizing sustainable tourism in small villages such as Vico Del Gargano
Territorial Identity and Rural Development: Organic Viticulture in Apulia Region and Languedoc Roussillon
The term ‚territorial identity‛, in its wide meaning, has to be preferred to ‚regional identity‛, as it better defines the sense of belonging to a place. The adjective ‚regional‛ makes reference to some defined spatial dimension, an enclosed space, which somehow represents a limit and ends by colliding with the idea of belonging to a private ‚where‛. The word ‚territory‛ seems to be the most proper one to connote the process of organization in a physical space, irrespective of its extension. For this reason, it does not deal with the ‚region‛, meant as a piece of land limited by borders, but with ‚territory‛, as a more open space. The interest of economic geographers for the relationships between territorial identity and development results quite evident; the best way to animate the economy and the wealth of a territory is undoubtedly represented by an endogenous approach to the socio-economic development, which focuses on local places and resources and on the participation of all main players in the territory. It is necessary to look inside the territory in order to discover and recover, and sometimes invent, the ‚territorial identity‛, which then becomes an instrument to identify the specific resources, potentially coming from a territory, and to define different strategies to be able to face those menacing forces against the socio economic wealth. Such an approach enables to connect people to the territory and to stir that local awareness, that geo-cultural unity, upon which it will be later possible to build the proper sense of development: namely the territory
Rural poverty and rural development: a case for family Farming and sustainable tourism in the National Park of Gargano (Italy)
Nowadays agricultural markets are going through a process of radical transformation and chances arise to make significant progress in the fight against rural poverty. Although during the past ten years more than 350 million people in rural areas have reached a standard of living out of the state of absolute poverty, global poverty itself remains a phenomenon predominantly rural. In order to put in place effective strategies, it is fundamental to create an
environment that allows people living in rural areas to overcome all the challenges they face in their efforts to successfully manage their economic activities. This is particularly true with reference to Family farming in protected areas; in the National Park of Gargano, in Puglia region (Italy), the Park authority recognizes the important role of farmers in managing the territory of the Park itself, and in fostering rural development; an in-depth analysis of the Park agro-ecosystems constitutes the starting point to develop effective governance tools to preserve the agro-pastoral traditions of local communities and to enable the National Park of Gargano and the farmers operating in it to interact in order to develop a “management model”
capable of assessing the agro-environmental sustainability of farms and promote their multifunctionality, with particular regard to sustainable tourism, leading the National Park of Gargano to become member of the Europarc Federation
Agriculture and land use: context analysis and future perspectives from the Mediterranean to the Apulia region
Land use patterns have, over the centuries, reflected the continuous interaction between human activities and natural environment, and have resulted in significant environmental impacts and its consequences, both positive and negative on the well-being of human groups. The scarcity of resources, land and water, represents a great social challenge, especially in a context of climate change and food insecurity. These challenges are particularly significant
for the Mediterranean, a region characterized by dynamic population and high density, with strong constraints on land and water resources. The Mediterranean has a long history of land use and represents one of the richest areas in terms of biodiversity; because of its cultural and environmental characteristics and its long history, the Mediterranean basin hosts a variety of land use systems of varying intensity and levels, ranging from intensive systems to traditional "mosaic" ones. These traditional mosaic systems are associated with high biodiversity values and landscapes particularly vulnerable to global changes, which see their survival threatened not only in terms of food supply, but also with respect to a number of ecosystem services linked to the multifunctional dimension of agriculture. In this context, starting from the report on land use in Italy, the contribution aims to provide a broad and precise picture of its current patterns at different levels, up to the Apulian regional scale. Agriculture itself, to which the delicate issue of land use is necessarily linked, today represents a fundamental strategic sector for the Mediterranean countries, whose centrality in Euro-Mediterranean regional cooperation requires an in depth reflection and analysis
Territorial identity and terroir. An analysis of the role of organic viticulture in the durability of rural landscapes
The interest of the economic geographers for the relationships between territorial identity and development results quite evident; the best way to animate the economy and the wealth of a territory is undoubtedly represented by an endogenous approach to the socio-economic development, which focuses on local places and resources and on the participation of all main players in the territory. It is necessary to look inside the territory in order to discover and recover, and sometimes invent, the “territorial identity”, which then becomes an instrument to identify the specific resources, potentially coming from a territory, and to define different strategies to be able to face those menacing forces against the socio-economic wealth. Such an approach enables to connect people to the territory and to stir that local awareness, that geo-cultural unity upon which it will be later possible to build the proper sense of development: namely the territory. As to the concept of “Terroir”, it is an old word coming from Latin, defining a land considered for its agricultural and,
above all, wine-producing potentiality. It is a space whose limits come from a human construction, formalized by administrative documents and whose edges have to take into consideration the complex local realities. The human community builds the terroir in a delimited space, to which it is eographically very tied; it is a coherent reference, since the agricultural inclinations depend on the promotion by human activities. In sociologic terms this concept evokes relationships of solidarity which are developed around destinies, identity, competences, and around the elaboration of shared collective rules
Understanding Eating Disorders: Conceptual and ethical issues in the treatment of anorexia and bulimia nervosa.
Simona Giordano presents the first full philosophical study of ethical issues in the treatment of anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Beginning with a comprehensive analysis of these conditions and an exploration of their complex causes, she then proceeds to address legal and ethical dilemmas such as a patient's refusal of life-saving treatment. Illustrated with many case-studies, Understanding Eating Disorders is an essential tool for anyone working with sufferers of these much misunderstood conditions, and for all those ethicists, lawyers, and medical practitioners engaged with the widely relevant issues they raise.Includes bibliographical references (p.
