GPCS 87 President PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Looking back over this year, our school has changed a lot with our new bandroom, renovated shop, the new six-day rotation system and our new teachers. I think this all helped in making our school the best it has been since I've been here. I really had a great time being president and believe me, it's not easy! I had fun planning and organizing events over the year and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. As we, the grade nine's go on to grade ten, I don't think we'll ever forget this super school! For those of you who are staying for another one or two years good luck and keep our school the best ever! Sincerely, Leah Schipper VICE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Another great year has gone by, but this year was exceptional. The participation and school spirit really made Paterson shine. Many people in our community realized that our school is a place that welcomes them. We, as a student body and staff, worked to ensure we emphasized the community theme. Being vice president has meant a lot of hard work but the position was very rewarding. I've had a lot of new, enjoyable experiences. I would encourage others to support Student Council activities. I would like to express my appreciation to all the people who helped out in the many school events. To the teachers for their support and the students for their awesome participation. These people make Paterson great. In future years I'm sure this 86/87 school year will be looked back on as one to remember. Our achievements were many and will be even greater as "We've only just begun". Good luck to all in your quest for success. Sincerely, Meg Thompson IM NCT R£ACY FOR THIS' Student Council Emily Campbell, Brenda Wong, Allison Townsend, Katrina Tanne, Joanne Paterson, Krista Beny, Jenny Murphy. Principal’s Message "You've only just begun. . to this line of the song from which y Although you are completing your years at Gilbert Paterson Community School, you hold the key to all of the future which stretches ahead of you. What you achieve and the level of satisfaction and happiness which you obtain in the years to come will be significantly affected by the decisions that you make today. There are some keys to personal success that have proven themselves over the years. Look to the future with optimism and cultivate a positive mental attitude. Success is much more elusive for the individual with a sour disposition. You will have successes and you will have failures to be sure. Remember to view each as a learning experience. Strive to be the best that you can be. On the track, races are won and lost by mere split seconds - this is the difference between glory and tears. It is the same in life. Striving to be a "little bit better" can make the difference. People tend to get what they expect from themselves and others. Therefore, expect the best from yourself and from those around you. And most importantly - be a friend to yourself. You are special - act that way. Even though "you've only just begun" you can look forward with great anticipation to a very bright future indeed. Biculturalism: a search for self through life experiences and the interaction of the people that help influence it

    No full text
Bicultural theories can help us understand people who experience bicultural or multicultural situations. This is important because a shared cultural understanding will allow us to be more comfortable in our own culture and to adapt to the expectations of others. This process is experienced as a personal journey to recover and stabilize with one‟s own identity. Consequently, some kind of resolution is the outcome. This essay will analyze literature that is written by two culturally diverse authors, Leslie Marmon Silko and Maxine Hong Kingston to learn of the social and cultural consequences of bicultural experience. The protagonists must first understand their own cultural heritage in order to attain ethnic identity. Their conflicts become the basis for selfhood. I will explain how these authors use myths, talk stories, landscape and family to theorize and articulate multicultural identity.M.A.L.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Allene Patterso

Chasing justice, challenging power: legal consciousness and the mobilization of sexual harassment law

    No full text
This project examines the legal consciousness of women who have filed sexual harassment complaints against their employers. I chose to focus on sexual harassment because I am particularly interested in the intersection of law and social attitudes about gender and sexuality. Examining the experiences of women who turn to the law in response to sexual harassment helps uncover the ways in which power in American law and social structures is suffused with understandings of gender and sexuality. My project attempts to understand the viewpoint of those who would challenge the existing power dynamic, and explore how the social structures of gender, sexuality and patriarchy are implicated in women's conceptions of legality. The analysis is based on interviews with a dozen women who experienced sexual harassment in the workplace. These women have distinguished themselves from their peers by filing a formal complaint, lawsuit or grievance. The interview subjects, unlike the majority of women who are sexually harassed, have decided to invoke the law on their behalf. In order to understand how legal consciousness informs the understanding, expectations and experiences of my respondents, I develop a theoretical framework based on legal consciousness literature and feminist analysis of sexual harassment law. I explore the questions of how my respondents view the law, the expectations they have of law and how their interaction with the legal system influences their legal consciousness. The interviews paint a vivid picture of the experience of harassment and the implications of trying to use the law as a means of empowerment. The stories of these individual women illustrate the power of law to constrain individual action, and emphasize how patriarchy establishes and maintains gender inequality in the social and economic structures of the workplace and the legal system. However, they also show how individuals will resist the hegemonic power of the law and seek to use the law to empower themselves, despite an awareness of the challenges and limitations of law.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 186-194)

From protest politics to granite countertops: the shifts in community development in Baltimore, Maryland from 1950-2010

    No full text
In the early 2000s, newly-elected Mayor of Baltimore Martin O’Malley announced support for a community revitalization strategy to attract middle- and upper-income homeowners that diverged from prior community development efforts which focused on providing a wide range of services primarily to poor neighborhoods. O’Malley worked with a Philadelphia-based community development financial institution, The Reinvestment Fund (TRF), to target six initial neighborhoods that could potentially support homeownership. Community development actors coalesced around this strategy, exemplified through the Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative (HNI), which fit the broader mid-2000s trend of cities using data-driven mechanisms to direct resources to neighborhoods with market potential. In this dissertation, I conducted a case study to answer who the primary actors were in developing this approach and how this differed from previous community development efforts. While this community development effort looks different from prior approaches, I traced a clear path through Baltimore’s community development history and the changing local and political economic landscape, from the protest politics of the 1960s all the way to middle-class homeownership of the 2000s. My findings suggest that there was a change in the community development approach in the 2000s as community development organizations, foundations and the city, under new political leadership, turned their attention to previously overlooked neighborhoods to which they could attract middle- and upper-income residents as homeowners. The experiences of two Baltimore community development organizations, Patterson Park Community Development Corporation and Belair-Edison Neighborhoods Inc. help illustrate how the approach was carried out on a neighborhood level. While community development organizations historically reacted to downtown development and insular decision-making, some organizations became part of the city’s neighborhood redevelopment effort. I also answer how community development organizations responded to and were transformed by the rise of foreclosures in the 2000s, which threatened gains in homeownership and negatively impacted the city and its community development organizations. However, the city, foundations and community development organizations remain committed to homeownership as a community development strategy.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Kate Davidof

The annual publication of the students of Gilbert Paterson Middle School, Lethbridge, Alberta. (Volume. 2001-02)pdf1^'ST^ Administrators’Message It is with great pride that we, the administration team at Gilbert Paterson Community School, have served you over the past year. At times the 2001-02 school year has been difficult and at times exciting. But together we have grown as a community to become caring, concerned and compassionate citizens. The events of September 11, 2001 brought a sudden realization that we in Lethbridge do not live in isolation from the rest of the world. In spite of this unrest and uncertainty, there has never been a more favourable time in this great nation of ours. Young Canadians have educational and lifelong opportunities abound. The choices presented can be mind-boggling, as technology has created a limitless boundary to our imagination. Yet, it is reality, which forces us to become strong citizens. Emerson said, “It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself’. Young Canadians like yourselves must take the opportunities and advantages you have to work hard and make Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada and the World a community of caring, concerned and compassionate citizens just as you have done at Paterson. Published in Canada Printed in USA 2001 On August 22 & 23, 2001, 22 students and 16 teachers participated in a Leadership Retreat at Gilbert Paterson Community They painted, ate, played games, ate, designed logos, ate, had a fashion show, ate, played ninjas, and got to know each other really well. The Ninjas in the Dark game got pretty crazy according to the stories the next morning. But they sure learned how to have fun and how to be good leaders for the years to come! 2 Leadership Retreat- August 2001 3 Welcome to Grade Nine To kick-off their return to school and their last year at GPCS, the grade 9s were treated to a pancake breakfast cooked and served by the teachers. With Mr. Philpott, Mr. Usman, Mr. Scott and Mr. Smith to pour and flip, what could possibly go wrong? 4 Welcome Back Breakfast 5 Turkey Trot 2001 On October 5, 2001 ,the Grade 8 Leadership class lead students at GPCS in a TURKEY TROT. Both the elementary and middle level students participated in the event that morning. Students were to partner up and then estimate the time it would take them to circle the school yard TWICE. The person(s) who walked, ran, skipped or whatever closest to their estimated time won— YOU GUESSED IT-- a turkey for 6 Halloween 2001 J. M 7 Outdoor Ed 8 Writing on Stone October 10-12,2001 Oct. 10- Mr. Boulet gathered his group outside of GPCS. Along with Mrs. Lysak and Mrs. King, they boarded a bus for Writing-On-Stone with none other than Mr. T. Spackman driving! Did they know what they were in for? Day One:winds calm but cool. Students set up camp in designated areas and then explored while the 3 fierce leaders, Boulet, King and Lysak lunched. One group returned from their explorations to find that a few birds had chewed their way into their food boxes. Sure nice of them to share with the locals!. With snacks in hand to feed Mr. Boulet and themselves, the students were lead on a hike around the park. They saw beautiful hoodoos and land features, cool ancient writings and SNAKES! Yep! Having only heard stories about snakes and slitheries, the group actually saw a rattle snake crawling around in his hole. That night the wind shook the tents while the coyotes howled while they slept. hen are we going —HOME? IIIKnWX. Day Two: windy, rainy, cold- The park officer came by with her bus and took the group on an official tour of the Writing On Stone park. She told stories about the native people who use to live on the land and pointed out the different writings left behind. Once back at the campsite, the group played Capture the Flag and explored the hoodoos nearby. Johnny, however, tried desperately to please his team and ended up with a sprained ankle. Needless to say, he had to get Mr. Boulet to give him a piggy back ride back to the campsite where he was attended to by Nurse Lysak. That night, after roasting marshmallows and singing campfire songs, they fell asleep to the howling of the coyotes and the snoring of their leader, Mr. Boulet......or was it Mrs. Lysak???? An extension of Hejhal’s algorithm to infinite volume fundamental domains

    No full text
This work presents an algorithm for numerically computing Maass forms and their eigenvalues for Fuchsian groups of infinite covolume. By Patterson-Sullivan theory, this has the added benefit of computing Hausdorff dimensions of the limit sets of these groups. To approximate Maass forms, we consider their Fourier expansions in different coordinate systems. To handle infinite volume fundamental domains, we introduce the concept of flare domains. We also develop theory about Fourier expansions in flare domains which mimics the classical theory on expansions with respect to cusps. Finally, we present detailed examples of the algorithm applied to symmetric Schottky groups and infinite volume Hecke groups.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical reference

Home and community based parenting support programmes and interventions: report of Workpackage 2 of the DataPrev project

    No full text
The last decade has witnessed an increasing interest in the promotion of mental health and wellbeing because of its importance for health and social functioning at the individual level and for the social and economic wellbeing of societies. Recent research from a range of disciplines has highlighted the importance of the quality of the parent-child relationships and parenting on children‟s emotional and social development, and on adult mental health and wellbeing. Intervention studies involving children of all age groups have shown that if parenting can be influenced for the better outcomes can be changed. The DataPrev project was funded by the 6th Framework of the European Community Research Programme under Policy-Orientated Research with the aim of establishing a database of evidence-based programmes in Europe that promote mental health and wellbeing and prevent mental illness throughout the life course. This is the report of the Workpackage 2 describing the international evidence base on programmes to support parenting, including home and community based programmes

Community College Transfer Student Bias and Discrimination in University Students

    No full text
University students that have previously attended community colleges frequently report feeling stigmatized at their new institution. Though most research has focused on transfer students and their perceptions of stigma, less is known about potential sources of these stigma, such as their fellow students. To examine the bias university students may have towards peers enrolled at their school who had previously attended community college, I conducted a factorial survey experiment. Students at a large public university were asked to evaluate randomly assigned student profiles with different educational backgrounds. This experimental design addresses common concerns with under-reporting of socially unacceptable forms of bias and exclusion. My analysis suggests that community college transfers are not evaluated worse than other students in terms of academics or overall, except for one specific test condition. Comparing students who had low GPAs but had taken rigorous courses, community college transfers were rated worse than traditional students in terms of their academics. Interestingly, there were no differences between holistic rankings of students who had previously attended community college and students who either matriculated directly in a four-year university or transferred from a comparable four-year institution. This may suggest that university students hold stigmatizing views of community colleges.Embargo status: Restricted until 06/2027. Understanding school dropout among adolescents in a rural site of southern Zambia

    No full text
Includes bibliographical references (p. 222-233).The study of school dropout in Zambia is still in its infancy. Apart from the countrywide annual surveys conducted by the Ministry of Education, no in-depth study on school dropout seems to have been conducted. These surveys have consistently indicated that school dropout is most common among rural adolescents. Thus, this study sought to have an in-depth understanding of the factors that influenced rural adolescents to drop out of school by drawing a purposive sample of 10 dropouts, 10 parents of the dropouts, five teachers from the school attended by the dropouts in a rural site of southern Zambia

Beginning teacher network: The design of an online community of practice for beginning teachers in Australia

    No full text
The high attrition rate of teachers in their first five years of teaching coupled with an ageing teacher profile necessitates innovative approaches to beginning teacher support and professional development. This paper argues (and provides a theoretical framework) for the development, implementation and evaluation of an online community of practice that involves cross-sectoral collaboration and which is linked to professional standards. The online community allows new teachers to be mentored by expert teachers and to communicate with peers, and provides access to a range of resources including lesson plans, videos of exemplary teaching, annotated lists of useful websites and frequently asked questions. Such access may help to lessen the feelings of isolation and lack of support felt by many beginning teachers, and provide a link between the practical realities and constraints of the classroom and the more innovative, research-based methods and strategies teachers learn while at university
