The annual publication of the students of Gilbert Paterson Junior High, Lethbridge, Alberta.(1974-75)pdfREFLECTION 75 Yearbook of Gilbert Paterson Junior High School, Lethbridge, Alberta 1974-75This yearbook is dedicated to Mrs. Lynda Murray, who has been the head secretary of Gilbert Paterson School for the past ten years from 1965 1975. Mrs. Murray came to our school after taking the business training course at the L.C.I. For two years, she was the only secretary here and then some part time help came along. She has enjoyed working here immensely. Before coming here, she worked for the Government Experimental Farm. Early in the year, Mrs. Murray moved to a farm near Coaldale. She says she really enjoys the quiet farm beauty and the Coaldale community. She is married and has a brand new baby. She also has a pet cat called Toby. Her hobbies include knitting and hooking rugs, swimming, painting, gardening and cooking. Her new profession is that of a full time homemaker. We have really appreciated you in all the ways you have helped us Mrs. Murray. From everyone at Gilbert Paterson, many thanks and best wishes for the future.THE DECISIONS THAT COUNT This school year has been one of the best that I can remember. Together we have faced many small problems and inconveniences caused by the on going construction program, but everyone has been most considerate and thoughtful. We now look forward to the fullest possible enjoyment of our new facilities in this and in the years to come. Our school is fast becoming what we dreamed of and there are many reasons for this. Some are architectural, but the more important ones are the many little considerations we have shown each other daily throughout this very trying period in our development. In like manner, it is the small things that will decide what each of us will get out of life. We often think that our lives will be shaped by the big decisions we make: Will I go to University? What will I do for a living? Whom shall I marry? Important as these are, it is the little decisions that we make every day of our lives that makes us into the person we are and will become. Often, we feel we have little freedom to make choices. Our parents, our teachers, and circumstances make them all for us. So, we drift along, giving little thought to such choices as: Will I watch a movie or will I do my homework? Will I find a hobby or will I just hang around? Whom shall I choose as friends -- or will I let others choose my friends for me? Will I be my own person or will I blindly follow the group? These are the kinds of decisions that make up the pattern of our lives. They determine what we are or what we will be. This is why it is important for us to occasionally stop and ask ourselves: Why am I doing this? Why did I do that? What are the reasons for my actions? What is it that is important to me? What are my values? Sometimes we feel it is not necessary for us to make a decision but this is simply not valid. Life, itself, is a decision making process. To reneg in this, to refuse to make decisions is a cop-out of the most serious kind tantamount to committing oneself to a life of failure and disappointment. Do not let yourself drift for, 'not to decide is to decide'. Take a stand in life and be someone. Remember the words of the wise man who said, "By small and simple things are great things brought to pass."Yearbooks are not just for NOW. They become much more prized as the years wear on. So should it be with the school which produces the yearbook. I hope that you are enjoying your yearbook just as I hope your school years at Paterson are good years. But I believe that the real goodness of the three years you spend here will become known to you after you leave. It has been the experience of many of us that the effort which is devoted to some task is repaid many times over as we reflect back on the result. If you believe this, it should become easier for you to put forth a good effort NOW and to enjoy the good feeling that accompanies your effort. Then if I say that I hope you get what you deserve, you will know I mean it positively. I hope you deserve happy thoughts about your school NOW and I hope those happy thoughts mean even more when you look back through this book next year and the year after that and the year after that. Over the years, the students of Paterson Junior High have exhibited very high standards in both behavior and achievement. This year has been no exception. It has become a common occurence to hear those having the opportunity of working in this school as well as members of the community express their pleasure in working with and for you. In this brief message, I join with them and salute you also. In a day and age when it has become fashionable for young adults to adopt a negative stance, it is indeed refreshing to work with students who know and appreciate the value of good, honest effort. As you plan for your life ahead, may I make one suggestion for a life of true greatness and immeasurable joy? The formula is simple and the doing is both exciting and extremely rewarding. In whatever walk of life you choose, seek to serve and better the situation of your fellow man. I guarantee that in so doing, your own life will be both happy and meaningful . CrightonThe New Media Centre We are very proud of our new media centre. The construction started in late spring and was completed on March 4. The librarians moved in the same day. It is now open for the whole schools enjoyment. When the yearbook staff asked Mrs. Endresen how she liked it, she commented that "I'm quite pleased with the whole arrangement." Now, with the addition of the childrens' playroom, there is enough space for students to walk freely in and even more for storage. New facilities in the new library include; two power poles with four surrounding private booths each to work in. Also, there is a new magazine area, with coffee table, love scat and easy chairs. Other features are a cable T.V. hookup and a lovely display of stuffed geese, owls, crows and other things all over the room. We hope that in the future, Paterson students will use and enjoy these beautiful facilities to the fullest possible extent.Mr. P. Chapman Mr. J. Clack Mrs. J. Cummins Mr. S. Danyluk Mr. E. Saying so-long or farewell to a place that has so many happy memories and where we have shared so many happy experiences is much easier said than done. Many wonderful developments have taken place over the last few years here at Paterson. Our Activities Program is a fine example of this. Having so many different things to choose from including boys' cooking, girls' shop, lapidary, and so many other crafts, hobbies and skills has made it very special. With such great people in this school, we at Paterson have really made it work. Teachers and students have cooperated together in so many areas and have made our whole program not only enjoyable but really exciting and so very worthwhile. Our teachers have been the kind who were always willing to hear our side of things -- ideas, suggestions, comments --it didn't matter. They were always willing to give us a helping hand whenever it was needed. Another great thing is the new construction and our sparkling new gym, canteen, and library -- not to mention additional conference rooms for our Paterson community, the redecorated classrooms and our new science rooms. These have all contributed to making our school a better, more efficient, cheerier place to be in. As Grade 9's, now graduating, we won't be here to gain the full benefit of these beautiful facilities next year, but I am sure that those who succeed us next year and in the years to come will appreciate them as we have in these few months since our official opening. But it isn't just the new facilities or the activities program that gives us this feeling of belonging: It is the fact that we have belonged in every sense of the word. Some of us started school here in Grade 1 -- On behalf of all the Grade 9's graduating here today, I want to extend our sincerest thanks to our teachers, administrators and counselling staff. Special thanks go to the maintenance staff who helped us with our dances, carnivals and special events. We would like also to thank all those who contributed in so many ways to make this the kind of school we are really sorry to leave. Goodbye and good luck to you all -- and above all THANKS. The annual publication of the students of Gilbert Paterson Middle School, Lethbridge, Alberta. (Volume. 2001-02)pdf1^'ST^ Administrators’Message It is with great pride that we, the administration team at Gilbert Paterson Community School, have served you over the past year. At times the 2001-02 school year has been difficult and at times exciting. But together we have grown as a community to become caring, concerned and compassionate citizens. The events of September 11, 2001 brought a sudden realization that we in Lethbridge do not live in isolation from the rest of the world. In spite of this unrest and uncertainty, there has never been a more favourable time in this great nation of ours. Young Canadians have educational and lifelong opportunities abound. The choices presented can be mind-boggling, as technology has created a limitless boundary to our imagination. Yet, it is reality, which forces us to become strong citizens. Emerson said, “It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself’. Young Canadians like yourselves must take the opportunities and advantages you have to work hard and make Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada and the World a community of caring, concerned and compassionate citizens just as you have done at Paterson. Published in Canada Printed in USA 2001 On August 22 & 23, 2001, 22 students and 16 teachers participated in a Leadership Retreat at Gilbert Paterson Community They painted, ate, played games, ate, designed logos, ate, had a fashion show, ate, played ninjas, and got to know each other really well. The Ninjas in the Dark game got pretty crazy according to the stories the next morning. But they sure learned how to have fun and how to be good leaders for the years to come! 2 Leadership Retreat- August 2001 3 Welcome to Grade Nine To kick-off their return to school and their last year at GPCS, the grade 9s were treated to a pancake breakfast cooked and served by the teachers. With Mr. Philpott, Mr. Usman, Mr. Scott and Mr. Smith to pour and flip, what could possibly go wrong? 4 Welcome Back Breakfast 5 Turkey Trot 2001 On October 5, 2001 ,the Grade 8 Leadership class lead students at GPCS in a TURKEY TROT. Both the elementary and middle level students participated in the event that morning. Students were to partner up and then estimate the time it would take them to circle the school yard TWICE. The person(s) who walked, ran, skipped or whatever closest to their estimated time won— YOU GUESSED IT-- a turkey for 6 Halloween 2001 J. M 7 Outdoor Ed 8 Writing on Stone October 10-12,2001 Oct. 10- Mr. Boulet gathered his group outside of GPCS. Along with Mrs. Lysak and Mrs. King, they boarded a bus for Writing-On-Stone with none other than Mr. T. Spackman driving! Did they know what they were in for? Day One:winds calm but cool. Students set up camp in designated areas and then explored while the 3 fierce leaders, Boulet, King and Lysak lunched. One group returned from their explorations to find that a few birds had chewed their way into their food boxes. Sure nice of them to share with the locals!. With snacks in hand to feed Mr. Boulet and themselves, the students were lead on a hike around the park. They saw beautiful hoodoos and land features, cool ancient writings and SNAKES! Yep! Having only heard stories about snakes and slitheries, the group actually saw a rattle snake crawling around in his hole. That night the wind shook the tents while the coyotes howled while they slept. hen are we going —HOME? IIIKnWX. Day Two: windy, rainy, cold- The park officer came by with her bus and took the group on an official tour of the Writing On Stone park. She told stories about the native people who use to live on the land and pointed out the different writings left behind. Once back at the campsite, the group played Capture the Flag and explored the hoodoos nearby. Johnny, however, tried desperately to please his team and ended up with a sprained ankle. Needless to say, he had to get Mr. Boulet to give him a piggy back ride back to the campsite where he was attended to by Nurse Lysak. That night, after roasting marshmallows and singing campfire songs, they fell asleep to the howling of the coyotes and the snoring of their leader, Mr. Boulet......or was it Mrs. Lysak???? The essay re-examines and re-edits this highly problematic piece in order to attempt to understand it as a response to the crusading movement. The focus is on elucidating meaning rather than analysing in extenso its linguistic and metrical features, which primarily characterised Dominique Billy’s approach in 1995. The lai dates from before the end of the thirteenth century and some indications suggest a time around the first half or middle of the century. The assumption has previously been that nothing is known of the author, but the name Nompar has been used from the Middle Ages to the present by the aristocratic family of Caumont La Force, and it would appear that there were three noblemen of that name during the thirteenth century which could be identified, or at least associated, with the author. Particularly problematic parts of the text have been re-interpreted and in some cases reconstructed, and an appreciation offered of the poet-musicians considerable skill in the delicate interweaving of words, melodic themes and stanzaic forms, in a song which artfully exploits the common theme of the crusader’s reluctance to leave his lover

GPCS 87 President PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Looking back over this year, our school has changed a lot with our new bandroom, renovated shop, the new six-day rotation system and our new teachers. I think this all helped in making our school the best it has been since I've been here. I really had a great time being president and believe me, it's not easy! I had fun planning and organizing events over the year and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. As we, the grade nine's go on to grade ten, I don't think we'll ever forget this super school! For those of you who are staying for another one or two years good luck and keep our school the best ever! Sincerely, Leah Schipper VICE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Another great year has gone by, but this year was exceptional. The participation and school spirit really made Paterson shine. Many people in our community realized that our school is a place that welcomes them. We, as a student body and staff, worked to ensure we emphasized the community theme. Being vice president has meant a lot of hard work but the position was very rewarding. I've had a lot of new, enjoyable experiences. I would encourage others to support Student Council activities. I would like to express my appreciation to all the people who helped out in the many school events. To the teachers for their support and the students for their awesome participation. These people make Paterson great. In future years I'm sure this 86/87 school year will be looked back on as one to remember. Our achievements were many and will be even greater as "We've only just begun". Good luck to all in your quest for success. Sincerely, Meg Thompson IM NCT R£ACY FOR THIS' Student Council Emily Campbell, Brenda Wong, Allison Townsend, Katrina Tanne, Joanne Paterson, Krista Beny, Jenny Murphy. Principal’s Message "You've only just begun. . to this line of the song from which y Although you are completing your years at Gilbert Paterson Community School, you hold the key to all of the future which stretches ahead of you. What you achieve and the level of satisfaction and happiness which you obtain in the years to come will be significantly affected by the decisions that you make today. There are some keys to personal success that have proven themselves over the years. Look to the future with optimism and cultivate a positive mental attitude. Success is much more elusive for the individual with a sour disposition. You will have successes and you will have failures to be sure. Remember to view each as a learning experience. Strive to be the best that you can be. On the track, races are won and lost by mere split seconds - this is the difference between glory and tears. It is the same in life. Striving to be a "little bit better" can make the difference. People tend to get what they expect from themselves and others. Therefore, expect the best from yourself and from those around you. And most importantly - be a friend to yourself. You are special - act that way. Even though "you've only just begun" you can look forward with great anticipation to a very bright future indeed. The symbolic significance of the ghaita as used in Moroccan Sufism

    No full text
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 68-71)....a serendipitous discovery of the Aissawa Order of Morocco ... lead me to become interested in the music of Morocco and particularly the use of oboes by the people of that country. I had already heard recordings of the Master Musicians of Jajouka, another Moroccan group who uses oboes, but saw that this group is already very well documented, and hoped that a study of the Aissawa would be more interesting because of their relative obscurity. They are a particularly interesting group because they are one of the few Sufi Orders that use the ghaita in their spiritual ceremonies (even though it is used widely as a secular ceremonial instrument), and this fact tempted me to explore the importance of the instrument to the group

Bulk commodities and the Liverpool and London markets of the mid-19th century

    No full text
We study British prices and the degree of commodity market integration between Liverpool, the bulk commodity port of mid-19th century, and London. A new wholesale commodity price index is presented for Liverpool and this is compared with the Klovland-Sauerbeck index. Next, we examine the relationship between Liverpool and London markets in specific bulk commodities. Our data consist of price indices for identically described goods in both Liverpool and London: three commodity groups (metal products, wood products, and processed foods), and the specific commodities of wheat and flour. Tests for cointegration reveal convergence among the six price pairs. We also find that the markets were highly integrated in the short-run because three of the commodity group pairs (processed foods, wheat, and flour) shared common features or cycles. A common cycle implies that transitory price shocks in Liverpool had the same impact on prices in London and vice versa. The importance of the London and Liverpool common cycle to a shock is brief. Its shock explains less than 20 percent of the variation in the relevant price levels after twelve months, on average.

Armed conflict and border society: The East and Middle Marches, 1536-60

    No full text
The final phase of the Anglo-Scots Wars (1542-1560) significantly affected Northumberland. The Tudor government attempted to use the militarised society of Northumberland as a means of subduing Scotland. However, the ensuing conflict took a heavy toll on the Marchers. Instability plagued the region, while leading military families feuded with each other. The efforts of the Tudors were not concerted enough to overcome the Marchers' allegiance to kith and kin. March society proved to be remarkably inhospitable for Tudor state building, and in the end, the military community of Northumberland remained just as vulnerable to both internal and external threats as it had been before the wars. This work questions the success of Tudor state building տ the mid-sixteenth century. The analysis employs both State Papers and local documents to illuminate the political dialogue between central government and the peripheral frontier administration. Official correspondences of March officers also highlight the depths to which Tudor policy had taken root in Northumberland. An analysis of muster rolls suggests that Northumbrian society’s involvement in the wars greatly fluctuated over nearly a twenty-year period, only to see the military capacities of Northumbrians significantly wane by 1560. The personal testimonies of officers imply that the Tudors had some initial success in bringing significant military power to their side. However, the same documents also suggest that incoherent policies resulted from the rapid succession of three separate monarchs after the death of Henry VIIL In the end, the Tudor state was unable to instil order in Northumberland, and the military necessities of frontier security remained problematic for the rest of the sixteenth century

Creating An Engaging, Reading Curriculum For Fifth Grade

    No full text
The research question addressed in this project was: what is the most effective literacy curriculum for developing adolescents? It documents one teacher’s creation of a whole novel literacy curriculum that focuses on the influence of adolescence. In particular, adolescents need the scaffolding to develop a sense of autonomy and promote positive social interactions. This curriculum focuses on three entire novel units that progressively reduces teacher control and promotes student independence. The author included three novels in the unit plan. This included Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, Wonder by R.J. Palacio, and an independent novel unit study. She concluded from the project that: 1) engagement is one of the most influential predictions of middle school academic success and novels help invest middle school readers into the characters; 2) critical thinking skills are a vital condition for healthy adolescent development and novels help organically introduce these skills
