Dobby the Robot: the Science Fiction in \u3ci\u3eHarry Potter\u3c/i\u3e

Science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke has famously argued that “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” This paper starts by exploring a few general ways in which science fiction influences Harry Potter, then focuses attention on one key element of science fiction which Potter quite clearly appropriates: the classic trope of the robot or created servant. First, using close textual analysis, the paper traces the robot trope and its accompanying features from its origins in Golem legends and in Shelley\u27s Frankenstein, through classic works of science fiction, including Čapek’s R.U.R., Asimov’s I, Robot, Heinlein’s The Moon is A Harsh Mistress and Lucas’ Star Wars. These features include the humanization of robots, the introduction of ethical considerations regarding personhood through the intervention of empathetic female characters, the chronic and advantageous underestimation of robots, and the narrative function of robots or droids as secret keepers and preservers of memory. Again utilizing a close reading of the texts, the paper identifies these as defining features of Rowling’s house-elves, who defy their fantasy genre and demonstrate science fiction’s unexpected yet profound influence on Potter

Kata Kunci: Teknik Marbling, Pengental, Pewarna, Motif.ABSTRACTThe marbling or ebru technique is a paper decorating technique from Persia which has the principle of forming motifs by playing dyes that float on the surface of a liquid. The marbling technique is one of the techniques for giving motifs to textiles that is environmentally friendly because it uses acrylic paint that has been given a little water which will be directly absorbed into the surface of the fabric and leave no waste. The background of this design is driven by the Indonesian people, who are not yet familiar with the marbling technique to make motifs on clothing textiles. The opportunity to develop products using marbling techniques in clothing textiles is tremendous. Currently, the development of clothing textiles is very rapid, including through the development of techniques because clothing textiles are one of the basic human needs. Seeing the opportunities and constraints of applying the marbling technique, the author designs fabrics for clothing using the marbling technique. The method used in creating this artwork uses Gustami's theory. This creation theory consists of three stages-six steps of craft art creation. The first is the exploration stage (collecting sources of ideas and references needed as a solution to the design of the work), the second is the design stage (designing the piece and visualizing it into six designs), and the third, the embodiment stage (turning two alternative sketches into works). Marbling textile on cotton dobby fabric which has good color and good fastness.

Dickensian Characters in J.K. Rowling\u27s Harry Potter

J.K. Rowling includes many Dickensian-esque characters in her Harry Potter series. This thesis compares the characters seen in Rowling\u27s series with many of Charles Dickens\u27s characters, specifically those seen in David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, and Bleak House. Rowling\u27s work is similar to Dickens\u27s novels in many ways. The most interesting connection between the two is how they treat the characters on the periphery of the societies they have created, most notably their orphans, servants, and women. Orphans are their most obvious comparison. Each author based their texts on the story of an orphan. However, there is more to their orphan connection than just a simple orphan-on-the-doorstep story. Dickens and Rowling utilize their orphans, Harry, David, Oliver, and Esther, to garner sympathy from their readers, which gains interest in their stories. Their orphans are closely associated to death, which emphasizes their precariousness in life and their relationship to their anonymous, deceased parents. Dickens and Rowling\u27s servant characters are vital to their orphaned protagonists\u27 lives and to the narrative itself. Characters such as Peggotty and Hagrid offer great moral support and love to their protagonists, David and Harry; however, Dickens and Rowling are contradictory in their representation of these beloved characters. Servant characters also have proved themselves to be self-sacrificing for the narrative and for the orphans, as seen in the characters of Jo, Nancy, and Dobby. Finally, Dickens and Rowling have a contradictory approach to their women. They give a quiet power to their seemingly powerless women. Characters, like Ginny and Agnes, appear powerless because they are often the romantic interest for the male protagonist. Yet Rowling\u27s women possess a quiet power found in the responsibilities placed upon the angel in the house. Finally, each author places power in the hands of women, such as Esther, Nancy, and Ginny, in their ability to write. This thesis examines how Rowling includes Dickensian characters in her series. It notes how the two authors use their peripheral characters to emphasize the affects their characters have on sympathetic readers

The progress of female police officers? An empirical analysis of organisational commitment and tenure explanations in two UK police forces

Purpose of paper. Although the number of women in UK police forces has grown rapidly, it appears that they continue to be under-represented in senior ranks. This research paper aims to establish empirically whether there is any foundation in the premise that female officers' lesser tenure and or lower levels of commitment than men explain their lack of career progress. Methodology. Using whole population surveys of two county police in the UK we compare the promotion of men and women police officers controlling for tenure. We then compare the organisational commitment of male and female officers and analyse whether female officers experience managerial and organisational influences that undermine their organisational commitment compared to men. Findings. The findings refute some of the widespread beliefs about reasons for female officers’ lack of progress in their policing careers since the analysis indicates that gender differences in length of tenure and organisational commitment can be discounted as possible explanations for lack of advancement in these two police forces. Overall, our results clearly show that female officers are just as committed as male officers and thus cannot be justified as a reason for lack of career progression. Managerial variables were found to be the strongest influence on organisational commitment and it appeared that there was no evidence that management support or organisational support were different for female officers compared to their male colleagues. Research Implications/Limitations. We accept that survey methods such as ours do not capture the entirety of employee feelings and responses since they tend to homogenise male and female working experiences. However, survey methods do have the advantage that it is possible to generalise from the results and thus these two studies allow us to suggest that our findings can be viewed as providing insights to other UK police forces in particular and to the broader field of the antecedents of organisational commitment in general. Practical implications. The relatively low levels of organisational commitment found should be a cause for concern for senior managers in the Police. The key importance that management has in influencing organisational commitment has been shown by our findings and this indicates the importance of the current Police Leadership Development Board’s agenda to improve workforce management skills to encourage transformational leadership styles. Moreover, there clearly remains much to be done to make police HRM policies more effective in achieving equality in promotion opportunities since the data presented shows that women’s careers are lagging behind even when tenure is taken into account. Value and originality of the paper. The paper make an original contribution by refuting widely held assumptions about the reasons for under-representation of female officers in senior ranks. It also contributes to the sparse literature that examines organisational commitment in the police and its antecedents
