Le polyptyque pour l'église San Giacomo Maggiore de Bologne dans l'oeuvre de Lorenzo Veneziano
Get PDFIl volume accompagna un'importante esposizione che riunisce per la prima volta i pannelli sopravvissuti di un grande polittico dipinto nel 1368 da Lorenzo Veneziano per l'altare maggiore della principale chiesa agostiniana di Bologna, San Giacomo. Questo capolavoro, smembrato nel Seicento e suddiviso fra alcune collezioni pubbliche (Tours, Bologna, Siracusa e Philadelphia), viene dunque ricomposto, seppur parzialmente, in questa occasione, che vede anche esposte, per la prima volta insieme, le opere di Paolo e Lorenzo Veneziano conservate in alcune prestigiose raccolte francesi: un evento che permette di comprendere la fiorente scuola pittorica veneziana del Trecento e il sottile passaggio dalla rappresentazione bizantina allo stile chiamato gotico internazionale. Il saggio di Cristina Guarnieri propone un'analisi dell'opera sotto il profilo soprattutto tipologico e stilistico, sottolineandone l'importanza all'interno del percorso artistico del pittore

Commission istituita da Roosevelt per proteggere i monumenti in Italia dai
bombardamenti. Reintegrato all’Università di Cagliari nel 1945, fu immediatamente
dispensato e destinato alla Direzione generale Antichità e belle arti a Roma, con funzioni
speciali in collaborazione con gli Alleati, per il recupero del patrimonio artistico e
archeologico sottratto dai tedeschi. Lui accettò, ma quel che voleva era fare ricorso per
essere stato escluso come ebreo ad un concorso a cattedra del 1938. Per trent’anni lavorò
ad Atene, come direttore della Scuola archeologica italiana

Its different handwritings are not due to the intervention of many people, but to different writing phases. Guarnieri transcribed inscriptions up to his death. On the whole, it is a very accurate work, even though it did not receive a final revision

Get PDFDuring the course of the fourteenth century, the Basilica of Sant’Antonio in Padua was in the process of becoming much more than a centre of congregation and a cornerstone of civic identity: it was developing into a Pantheon for the local aristocracy, a set of apartments, virtually, for the nobility of Carrarese Padua, at least to judge from the numerous family chapels that were built there. Of all these chapels, one in particular stands out: the monumental chapel erected by Bonifacio Lupi, which he secured thanks to finances gleaned from his activities as a mercenary and diplomat, as well as the earnings from his estate. Lupi’s chapel was one of the most prestigious spaces available within the new liturgical-devotional layout that had redefined the Franciscan building in the decades prior. The construction and sculptural decoration of the new chapel were entrusted, according to a rather detailed contract dated 12 February 1372, to the Venetian sculptor Andriolo de’ Sanctis. Meanwhile, Altichiero and Jacopo Avanzi were given the task of painting the chapel’s walls with a cycle representing Stories of Saint James the Greater, completed between 1376 and 1379. This essay analyses the monument in its entirety, considering the decoration of the chapel of San Giacomo an extraordinary example of joint programming, conceived from the beginning in a manner whereby the space and its furnishings would find their perfect counterpoint in the pictorial decoration. The iconographic program was designed by a refined concepteur, perhaps Lombardo della Seta, drawing into alignment the wishes of the commissioning family – with its aristocratic entourage – and the powerful Franciscan community. The representation of the Stories is therefore read on many levels, which this essay seeks to interrogate: as a reference to events surrounding the
patron and his family group, as a promotion of their own image within a careful dynastic celebration, and as a political glorification of the reigning family and of the city of Padua. Finally, this essay evaluates the modalities of the pictorial representation, namely the system of partitions, the conception of the space and the perspectival novelties, viewed within the context of the development of Paduan figurative culture in the second half of the Trecento

Vanadium Flow batteries: a path to long duration energy storage
No full textEnergy storage is a key technology for phasing out fossil fuels in the transition to renewable energy sources and smart grids, since it can provide different services, ranging from energy management, with long discharges, to power quality, with fast responses. Recently, the interest for long duration energy storage (LDES) is also emerging, that can include multi-hour discharges as well as storage over long periods of time (seasonal storage). Different technologies are available to store energy, among which closed batteries (lithium, sodium, ...) are strong enablers, thanks to features such as low environmental impact, flexible location, scalability, stillness, high efficiency. However, closed batteries present issues e.g. life duration, safety and self-discharge. Hydrogen storage promises to cope with long term storage, but it is prone to efficiency issues. In this framework, redox flow batteries (RFBs) are emerging as a competitive option for several services. Storing energy in liquid electrolytes held in tanks outside the reactor, they provide independent sizing of energy and power, thus allowing for long discharge times at full power which are inaccessible for closed batteries. Their most developed version, the vanadium RFB, exhibits very long life, virtually no self-discharge, operation at room temperature and pressure and absence of hazard risks such as fires and explosions. While VRFBs are gaining increasing commercial importance, more research is ongoing to improve their performance and competitiveness
