Pietro Rossano in URSS (1975) e l’Ostpolitik vaticana
The paper deals with the travel that mgr Piero Rossano, at that time secretary for the Secretariat for non Christians, did in Soviet Union in 1975 with fr. Chiavacci, senator Gozzini, his wife Vilma and an Italian writer, Gino Montesanto. In Montesanto’s archive the author found new information about this travel and about the meetings that Rossano had in Moscow, Zagorsk, Vilnius, Kaunas, Riga and Jurmala. The Italian delegation met representatives of the Moscow Patriarchate, of the Soviet regime, but, above all, met some leaders of the persecuted Catholic Church. The trip must be considered as an important piece of the Catholic Ostpolitik: a pastoral activity that included negotiations with hostile Governments, ecumenical meetings, and brotherly support to Catholic bishops beyond the Iron Curtain
Imago Dei anthropology in Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov
The first part of the article deals with Dostoevsky’s poetics of imago Christi in The Brothers Karamazov, i.e. with the intrinsic comparison between the characters of the novel and that special hero of the same novel that is Christ himself. Indeed, the figure of Jesus Christ not only occurs many times in The Brothers Karamazov, but the different characters strive towards Christ, are built upon Christ’s figura, in the sense Auerbach used this term in his book Mimesis. From this point of view, Dostoevsky’s poetics of imago Christi fits exactly with the pattern prefiguration–fulfillment, which the Fathers of the Church and their Medieval followers developed and used very often. In the second part of the article, patristic texts from Dostoevsky’s personal library, such as St. John Chrysostom’s writings, are analyzed as a source of imago Dei poetics. In particular, both St. John Chrysostom’s Letter to Monks and the chapter Elders (Chapter V of the Book I of the novel) focus on starchestvo, on human ‘inner image’ and on the spiritual enterprise – the so-called podvig – that every character of the novel, following Christ, has to fulfil
Il pentimento in Tolstoj e Dostoevskij. Dal cerchio magico dell'Io al bisogno di perdono
Given the religious metaphysics of Russian Realism (Steiner 1995: 49), repentance is one of the pivotal moments necessary for the characters of Tolstoy’s and Dostoevsky’s works: it is through repentance that such characters radically change their lives, become aware of evil committed, and renounce evil forever; in other words, they die and are reborn. The two great novelists have, however, two very different attitudes towards repentance: Tolstoy examines all its aspects in the psychological consciousness of his characters, while Dostoyevsky shows their necessary openness to the transcendent world
Tradurre il ritmo del poeta. Puškin nelle “versioni ritmiche” di Poggioli.
Renato Poggioli was not only a slavist and a comparativist, but also an accomplished translator into Italian and a specialist in translation studies. In his article The added artificer he enfasizes the attitude of the translator as “primarily formal, precisely because an external formal sanction is the main object of his quest”. In his translations Poggioli pays great attention to the formal aspects of the poems he translates, and especially to the metrical aspects. In his studies as well as in his translations, he admits for brief poems the possibility of a translation based on a metrical equivalent instead of a functional equivalent one. The article deals with Poggioli’s versions of Pushkin’s poems, in particular with The song of the President in The feast during the Plague. For this song Poggioli chose a rhythmic and metrical solution very close to the Russian original: he adopted an Italian iambic tetrameter which follows the same rules of the Russian iambic tetrameter. With this successful choice he broke the closeness of the Italian prosodic tradition. As a real added artificer he “invents a tradition”, gives solutions already abandoned in the Italian literary polysystem
