Ores to metals: the Rocky Mountain smelting industry
With a new preface.Includes bibliographical references and index. This comprehensive treatment of the smelting industry of Colorado, originally published in 1979, is now back in print with a new preface by the author. Packed with fascinating statistics and mining data, Ores to Metals details the people, technologies, and business decisions that have shaped the smelting industry in the Rockies. Although mining holds more of the glamour for those in and interested in the minerals industry, smelters have continuously played a critical role in the industry's evolution since their introduction in Colorado in the 1860s.1. Territorial (In) Coherence: Labour and Special Economic Zones in Laos's Border Manufacturing
© 2018 The Author. Antipode © 2018 Antipode Foundation Ltd. This article engages literature on special economic zones and territory in global development. I suggest a focus on labour's spatial class composition as constitutive of territorial coherence provides insights into how the Savan-Seno Special Economic Zone in Lao PDR operates as an economic border territory bridging Laos to the regional and global economies. The distanciated global connections which special economic zones aim to create are predicated on zones gaining internal coherence for capital accumulation. I suggest zones’ internal coherence depends on zone firms reworking the local class composition of labour, itself constituted by workers’ spatial practices. In the Savan-Seno zone this occurred through immobilising a mobile labour force and taking advantage of its continuing embeddedness within a subsistence rice-producing village economy. The argument aims to illustrate how zones producing for global markets act as territories of complex spatiality which span and connect multiple spaces of production and workers’ social reproduction
The 3D-Printed Cornett: Reflections on a Decade of Experimentation and Performance
Reflecting on some of the pioneering research that led to the first 3D-printed cornetts (2012–14), this paper describes various ways in which 3D-printed cornetts have since informed our understanding of historical performance practices, before discussing their subsequent use in the author's own professional practice. The latest iterations of the modular 3D-printed cornett at the center of this study demonstrate some opportunities afforded by the technology for innovation in contemporary instrument design, including a version with integrated piezo pickup for performance with live electronics. Finally, the author offers some thoughts on possible future directions for the research, with some consideration of environmental impacts and potential mitigations
Salt varieties defined by iodine, sodium-levels, flavor
Medical and dietetic students often co-author a column for the Daily Reflector under Dr. Kolasa's byline. The students research the topic a reader or patient has asked. Dr. Kolasa reviews their draft for technical accuracy, patient friendly language, people first language. She fact checks the study or other evidence-based reference the student provides. If a physician review is appropriate, Dr. Kolasa requests a colleague from ECU physicians to review the article. The final draft is submitted to the Reflector with the editor having the final say. The headline is written by the Reflector headline writer. The food and nutrition column has run weekly since 1987. Starting in 2020, in addition to the Daily Reflector, the article is published in daily and weekly papers owned by the Adams Publishing Group East (https://adamspg.com)This is a weekly Q and A newspaper column under the byline of Dr. Kathy Kolasa. This column compares different types of salt commonly found at grocery stores. It describes the texture, source, and mineral content of each type of salt and its culinary uses. The article also highlights the importance of moderation and provides tips for managing sodium intake.non

Reclamações ambientais em Aveiro, Portugal: atores, preocupações, padrão territorial e resoluções
This paper presents an environmental diagnosis based on public complaints on environmental
issues submitted to the Environmental Department of the Aveiro City Council, Portugal, between
2000 and 2005. It discusses the potential influences of these in local environmental planning
and governance. The paper has been organised into five sections. The first of these introduces
the study. The second section focuses on the conceptual approaches relating to environmental
grassroots movements, the main actors involved in these movements and the role played by
local government. It also contains a brief review of the most recent urban environmental
quality challenges in the European context together with a description of the main features of
the associated political and legal framework in Portugal. The third section describes the case
study and the methodology used. The results of the empirical study are detailed in the fourth
section. The final section critically analyses these results with emphases on the temporal
evolution of the submission of complaints, the actors involved, the local environmental problems
and their associated spatial pattern as well as the responses given by the City Council. This
information may then be used to provide a useful indicator for the perception of environmental
quality as well as a credible instrument for the visualisation and evaluation of local performance
in terms of environmental planning and management.AlBan Programme - n. E05M053040B
Advocating for Hybrid Intrusion Detection Prevention System and Framework Improvement
AbstractThe network systems of the world are fragile, and can come under attack from any source. The attack can be a denial-of-service (DoS) state or another type of threat. What keep the networks safe are the intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPS). They constantly monitor network traffic and if a malicious threat is detected, the threat is blocked and reported for further analysis. However, every defensive system must always have some type of weakness. False negatives and false positives are some examples of how IDPS can fail to protect the network. In another instance, a skilled attacker may employ Direct Kernel Object Modification (DKOM) to trick the IDPS into detecting no malicious activities. The IDPS is strong, yet not strong enough. This paper presents a hybrid solution that incorporates both signature and anomaly based systems to detect and prevent more malicious attacks by intensifying what is cataloged to include common anomalies to the baselines used by the signature based systems. We also propose an improvement in the framework to current Host IDPS/Network using signature and anomaly based methodologies by implementing a hybrid VMM-based Honeypot into a theorized self-healing hybrid IDPS to further boost their advantages in efficiency and accuracy
