His research incorporates fresh insights from management science and provides the first non‐US perspective on long‐range success.</jats:sec

Städtische Identität als kommunikative Konstruktion: Theoretische Überlegungen und empirische Analysen am Beispiel von Dresden

Abstract: The author argues from the viewpoint of the sociology of knowledge: She sees the city as a cultural phenomenon composed of physical and non-physical objectivations. Of course both, the physical and non-physical objectivations, are mutuallydependent. In this article, however, non-physical objectivations of the 'municipal culture' are focussed, especially interpretations that city dwellers have from their city. The 'municipal identity' of city dwellers is a part of the 'municipal culture'. It consists of interpretations from the city to which the city dweller has a relationship. 'Municipal culture' and 'municipal identity' are conceived as a communicative construction. They have arised in history within communicative processes focused on the city as such , and within communicative processes they up to now either get stabilized or transformed. The author outlines the most important theoretical concepts of identity which are discussed in the social sciences, and she presents results from an empirical case study wwhich was done in the city of Dresden with qualitative methods.

Josip Stadler (1843-1918) is a Croatian theologian, philosopher and the first Archbishop of Vrhbosna. He took his doctor's degree in philosophy (1865) and theology (1869) in Rome at the present-day Gregoriana University. He is the author of the manual Filosofija, which is comprised of six volumes: Dijalektika (1904), Kritika ili noetika (1905), Opća metafisika ili ontologija (1907), Kosmologija (1909), Psihologija (1910) and Naravno bogoslovlje (1915). In this thesis Stadler's conception of ontology and his philosophical-theological position will be treated. In the introduction, Stadler's life and work and his philosophical-theological opus are shortly presented. In the main part of the thesis the context of Stadler's philosophical-theological-pastoral works and the very Stadler's ontology will be analysed. Stadler belongs to neoscholasticism, which emerges in the middle of 19th century and develops more profoundly by publication of the encyclicals Aeterni Patris (1879) and Pascendi dominici gregis (1907). In the thesis authors that essentially influenced Stadler's philosophical-theological position in ontology and philosophy at all (Thomas Aquinas, Aristotle, Tongiorgi etc.) and authors who Stadler criticises in his Opća metafisika ili ontologija (Kant, Hegel, Descartes etc.) are mentioned. Some of the topics of Stadler's Opća metafisika ili ontologija: metaphysics, being (biće), essence, existence, space, time, substance, accident, hypostasis, person, cause, matter, form, perfection etc. After the Stadler's ontology is analysed, the significance of Stadler's ontology and his philosophy in his own time and in our days will be considered. In the conclusion main theses of the thesis are shortly exposed and a certain type of résumé is given

Work-home balance in Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden: Is it possible to identify models?

Abstract: Balancing home and work has become an increasingly important theme in western European countries as more women have entered the labour market. The main focus here is on the differences between Austria, the Netherlands, and Sweden. A critical comparison of welfare states shows that the different approaches in these countries can essentially be narrowed down to five models: the traditional or modified carer model, the egalitarian employment model, the universal carer model, as well as one with reversed roles. As opposed to previous comparisons, it is argued here that no one country can clearly be classified as one of these five types. On the contrary, depending on the research perspective, one will see an extremely complex pattern emerge of how job and family are combined, what kind of political regulations exist, and whether these are in agreement with social values and norms. That is why we need to analyse three different dimensions: firstly, employment participation and employment patterns of parents give insight into the practical compatibility. Secondly, maternity/paternity leave and childcare facilities are examined as an important factor of political compatibility. And finally, it will be shown how and to what extent these facts conform to social values and norms (cultural compatibility).

Ways for improving the co-ordination of VET and employment

Abstract: In this paper we provide a theoretical, practical and political analysis of the complex challenges involved in the co-ordination of vocational education and training (VET) and employment, and we propose various approaches for the solution to those challenges. Firstly, the controversial issues on a normative and conceptual, evaluative, analytic and prospective level are summarized and discussed. In the second section, we discuss various contributions from involved disciplines to the challenge of co-ordination of VET and employment, and we develop a conceptual framework. As a core thesis, we proclaim that co-ordination should be conceptualized as a complex field of interrelating mechanisms (hierarchy, market, association, networking), from which a learning system can emerge. Finally, we present examples for the actual functioning of practical and political approaches to VET and employment co-ordination, and we draft a strategic approach for further analysis.

Abstract: In May 1993 the Austrian parliament decided on the Fachhochschule Studies Act (Fachhochschul-Studiengesetz, FHStG). The new Fachhochschul sector established a neweducational pathway in the higher education system as an alternative to the universities. This paper analyses the emergence, development and implementation of the new policy from a policy learning approach . This approach tries to relate phenomena of policy change to concepts of institutional and social learning. In particularit focuses on processes of knowledge production and diffusion in the realm of polity. The analytical framework and the basic concepts of this study are tied to theoretical work on policy learning by Peter May (1992) and Paul Sabatier (1993; 1998).

Affection to and Exploitation of Europe: European Identity in the EU

Abstract: Since the 1990s, we have witnessed an increase in the search for European identity. Concepts of European identity are manifold and span from historical and political to cultural criteria. Less often, scholars refer to basic concepts of identity in psychology or sociology. We derive our understanding of European identity from both and conclude in a European identity based on the self-concept. It includes emotions, opportunistic attitudes and a strong impact of the social context. Data from the Eurobarometer help us to critically analyse this identity. We argue that European identity is an outcome of positive emotions towards Europe on the one hand and/or opportunistic attitudes towards the European Union on the other. An ordered logistic regression models proves that emotions and attitudes shape people's identification with Europe in the European Union (EU15 in 2003). We observe large differences across European societies with high identification in Italy, Spain, France and Germany. The opposite is the case in Greece, Sweden, Finland, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Concerning the effects of the predictors of European identity, affection is much more important for European identity than opportunistic attitudes.

Prekäre Integration: Die Folgen unsicherer Beschäftigungsverhältnisse

Abstract: Starting out from explaining the research design of a current qualitative research project (work in progress) on changes in the economic life of Switzerland, the question is raised in what way phenomena like precarious employment situationand social integration could be defined by way of sociological terms. This also includes answering the question in how far these two aspects, which must be viewed at in analytically different ways, are inevitably connected to each other. These theoretical thoughts on discussing the area under investigation are supposed to lead into sketching the chosen research perspective which focuses on the specific situation of the Swiss employment market. The change there is particularly expressed by an unemployment rate being constantly high for Switzerland since the early 1990s. Also, an increase of the number of so called "working poor" must be observed. On the other hand, the relation between unlimited and temporary employment has been nearly constant, different from countries with sufficient protection against dismissal, like e.g. France and Italy. Nevertheless, a feeling of insecurity is omnipresent; fear of losing the job is relatively wide spread. The goal of this qualitative research project is to find out which strategies of coping with their precarious employment situation people develop in the face of their problems as connected to this and to which resources of interpretation and to which competences they reach back. By way of acase analysis the reconstruction of such a strategy for action shall be made clear. In this context, also the in this case specifically working risk of being excluded is expressed.
