Performing the comic side of bodily abjection: A study of twenty-first century female stand-up comedy in a multi-cultural and multi-racial Britain
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.This thesis is a socio-cultural study of the development of female stand-up comedy in the first decade of the twenty-first century within a multi-racial and multi-cultural Britain. It also engages with the theory and practice of performance and asks the question: ‘In what ways can it be said that female stand-up comics perform the comic side of bodily abjection?’ This question is applied to three groups of female case-studies which include: those who came into stand-up comedy in the 1980s; second-generation transnationals who became established at the end of the twentieth century; and twenty-first century newcomers to stand-up comedy. This third group also includes the author of this thesis who uses her own embodied experience as research, and Lynne Parker whose Funny Women organization was set up in 2002 to facilitate female entry into stand-up comedy. Alongside these three groups the subject of females as audience of female stand-up comedy is also explored.
The issue of bodily abjection is explored in relation to seminal works on abjection by Julia Kristeva (1982) and Mary Douglas (1966) and regarding theories of the grotesque as posited by Mikhail Bakhtin (1984) and Mary Russo (1995). These texts are used in this thesis to argue that abjection is a significant aspect of both the context and content of contemporary female stand-up comedy and that the orifices, surfaces and processes of the body are still pertinent to twenty-first century female stand-up comedy
Leading Beautifully: How Mastery, Congruence and Purpose Create the Aesthetic of Embodied Leadership Practice
This paper explores the territory of leading as an embodied activity through the
lens of the aesthetic category of ‘the beautiful’. Its starting point is that
although much of the literature about effective leadership practice focuses on
leadership behaviours, little is written about the way in which those behaviours
are actually enacted. The musician, Bobby McFerrin serves as a case study for
identifying three key aspects of leading beautifully: mastery, congruence
between form and content, and purpose. These are further considered through
reference to the concept of beauty as theorised by the philosophers Plato and
Plotinus. The paper then considers how ‘leading beautifully’ might differ from
other conceptualisations of leadership and discusses the particular insight it
brings to understanding the nature of leading as a relational ph
A prediction-based curriculum analysis using the modified artificial bee colony algorithm
Due to the vast amount of students' information and the need of quick retrieval, establishing databases is one of the top lists of the IT infrastructure in learning institutions. However, most of these institutions do not utilize them for knowledge discovery which can aid in informed decision-making, investigation of teaching and learning outcomes, and development of prediction models in particular. Prediction models have been utilized in almost all areas and improving the accuracy of the model is sought- after this study. Thus, the study presents a Scoutless Rule-driven binary Artificial Bee Colony (SRABC) as a searching strategy to enhance the accuracy of the prediction model for curriculum analysis. Experimental verification revealed that SRABC paired with K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) increases the prediction accuracy from 94.14% to 97.59% than paired with Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Logistic Regression (LR). SRABC is efficient in selecting 14 out of 60 variables through majority voting scheme using the data of the BSIT students of Davao Del Norte State College (DNSC), Davao del Norte, Philippines. © 2019 International Journal of Advanced Computer Science and Applications

Performance evaluation of lightweight advanced encryption standard hardware implementation
Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is one of the most secured encryption algorithm because of its robustness and complexity. Because of its complexity, AES has slow computation. This paper presents a Lightweight Advanced Encryption Standard (LAES) design by replacing the MixColumn transformation of the traditional AES with a 128-bit permutation to lessen its computational complexity. Implementation of hardware cryptographic encryption aims to find the best trade-off between throughput and resource utilization. The proposed design is synthesized on various Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices and achieves the maximum clock frequency of 480.50 MHz with the highest throughput of 6.15 Gbps when synthesized on Virtex 7 XC7VX690T. The results on other devices show a higher throughput, better performance efficiency, and lesser area utilization when compared to the existing AES hardware implementation. © BEIESP
