Luehea rufescens Saint-Hilaire 1828
Luehea rufescens Saint-Hilaire (1828: 293). Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Paracatu, Saint-Hilaire s.n. (lectotype, designated here, P! [P 02142940]; isolectotype P! [P 02142939]). The original material of L. rufescens is preserved in P where Saint-Hilaire worked (Stafleu & Cowan 1976 –1988: 1064). It is represented by two duplicates, neither of which is mentioned in the protologue. Therefore, according to Art. 9.3 of the ICN, we designate herein specimen P 02142940 as the lectotype of L. rufescens by choosing the most complete specimen and one that best represents the protologue’s description. Based on Schumann (1886), Burret (1926) and the present study, the application of the name L. rufescens is confirmed as an accepted species.Published as part of Gerace, Samuele, Bovini, Massimo G., Peruzzi, Lorenzo & Baumgratz, José Fernando A., 2022, Typification of names in the neotropical genus Luehea (Malvaceae: Grewioideae), pp. 180-188 in Phytotaxa 542 (2) on page 185, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.542.2.5, http://zenodo.org/record/641598

Luehea parvifolia Huber 1898
Luehea parvifolia Huber (1898: 507). Type:— BRAZIL. Parà: “In campis ad fluvium Maracà Guyanae brasiliensis”, 1896, Guedes 576 (lectotype, designated here, RB! [RB00436823]; isolectotypes in G! [G00357094]). [= Luehea paniculata Mart.] Huber worked in Herbarium MG where his collection is kept, along with duplicates in other herbaria (Stafleu & Cowan 1976 –1988: 353). In the protologue of L. parvifolia only the Guedes 576 collection is cited without specifying an herbarium, but we found specimens in G and RB. Therefore, according to Art. 9.3 of the ICN, we designate herein Guedes 576 (RB00436823) as the lectotype by choosing the most representative specimen among the traced original material and one that also best represents the protologue’s description. Based on the type materials, the application of the name L. parvifolia is confirmed as a heterotypic synonym of L. paniculata, as previously accepted by Ducke (1922).Published as part of Gerace, Samuele, Bovini, Massimo G., Peruzzi, Lorenzo & Baumgratz, José Fernando A., 2022, Typification of names in the neotropical genus Luehea (Malvaceae: Grewioideae), pp. 180-188 in Phytotaxa 542 (2) on page 184, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.542.2.5, http://zenodo.org/record/641598
Luehea densiflora Saint-Hilaire 1828
Luehea densiflora Saint-Hilaire (1828: 294). Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Ouro Preto, “ Vila Rica ”, Saint-Hilaire s.n. (lectotype [as ‘holotype’], first-step designated by Cunha (1985: 17); second-step lectotype, designated here, P! [P 02142937]; isolectotypes MPU! [MPU017175]; P! [P 02142936]). [= Luehea speciosa Willd.] Saint-Hilaire (1828) did not mention a particular specimen to describe L. densiflora, and three original specimens collected by him are in P and MPU, both repositories of his collection (Stafleu & Cowan 1976 –1988: 1064). Cunha (1985) indicated a “not seen holotype ” at P, without specifying its identification number. Since two syntypes are present in P, the inadvertent typification by Cunha (1985) can be considered a first-step typification, and it requires now a second-step lectotypification (Art. 9.17 of the ICN). We can now designate herein specimen P 02142937 as the second-step lectotype by choosing the best-preserved specimen in accordance with the protologue’s description. Based on the type materials and original descriptions, the application of the name L. densiflora is confirmed as a heterotypic synonym of L. speciosa, as already accepted by Schumann (1886).Published as part of Gerace, Samuele, Bovini, Massimo G., Peruzzi, Lorenzo & Baumgratz, José Fernando A., 2022, Typification of names in the neotropical genus Luehea (Malvaceae: Grewioideae), pp. 180-188 in Phytotaxa 542 (2) on page 182, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.542.2.5, http://zenodo.org/record/641598
Luehea ochrophylla Martius 1841
Luehea ochrophylla Martius (1841: 50). Type:— BRAZIL. Bahia: Salvador, “In sepibus prope Cruz de Casma”, Martius 523 (lectotype, designated here, L! [L2352817]; isolectotypes BM! [BM000630984]; BR! [BR0000005491438], [BR0000005491469]; F! [F0073974F], [F0BN009245, negative photo]; HAL! [HAL118252]; K! [K000381820], [K000381821]; L! [L2352815]; M! [M0210167], [M0210168], [M0210169]; MO! [MO309032]; NY! [NY00415479]; OXF! [OXF00105140]; P! [P 02142935]; W! [W0119728], [W0307454]). Martius (1841) reported his collection number 523 in the protologue, but Cunha (1985) cited collection Luschnath 24 (M) as the ‘holotype’, but without having seen it. However, this specimen is not original material for L. ochrophylla because it was not mentioned in the protologue. The original specimen is Martius 523, part of the collection “Martii Herbar Florae Brasil ”, and mostly preserved in M, but with duplicates in several other herbaria. We designated herein Martius 523 (L2352817) as the lectotype in accordance with Art. 9.3 of the ICN because it is the most complete and best-preserved specimen congruent with the protologue’s description. Based on the type materials, the application of the name L. ochrophylla is confirmed as an accepted species, as proposed by Cunha (1985).Published as part of Gerace, Samuele, Bovini, Massimo G., Peruzzi, Lorenzo & Baumgratz, José Fernando A., 2022, Typification of names in the neotropical genus Luehea (Malvaceae: Grewioideae), pp. 180-188 in Phytotaxa 542 (2) on page 184, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.542.2.5, http://zenodo.org/record/641598
Luehea grandiflora Martius 1826
Luehea grandiflora Martius (1826: 99). Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Cocais, “ Crescit in montanis sylvis caeduis prope Cocaes, Maio ”, Martius s.n. (lectotype [as ‘holotype’], first-step designated by Cunha (1985: 19); second-step lectotype, designated here, M! [M0210173]; isolectotypes M! [M0210170], [M0210171], [M0210172]). In Martius’ protologue, the specimens on which this name is based are not specifically indicated. Nevertheless, it is known that collections of Martius are deposited in Herbarium M (Stafleu & Cowan 1976 –1988: 325). Cunha (1985) mentioned “ Martius s.n. ” (M) as the holotype, specifying not to have seen it (“ Holotypus – M, non vidi”), and not reporting any record number. This means that the status of the type needs to be corrected as lectotype and considered as a first-step typification (Art. 9.17 of the ICN). Therefore, in accordance with Arts. 9.3 and 9.4 of the ICN, we designate herein the specimen Martius s.n. (M0210173) as a second-step lectotype by choosing the most complete specimen and one that is congruent with the protologue’s description. The specimen M0210174 is only a reproduction of Figure 61 from Martius’ work. Based on Cunha (1985) and the present study, the application of the name L. grandiflora is confirmed as an accepted species.Published as part of Gerace, Samuele, Bovini, Massimo G., Peruzzi, Lorenzo & Baumgratz, José Fernando A., 2022, Typification of names in the neotropical genus Luehea (Malvaceae: Grewioideae), pp. 180-188 in Phytotaxa 542 (2) on pages 182-183, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.542.2.5, http://zenodo.org/record/641598
A new species of Luehea (Malvaceae, Grewioideae) from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest
Abstract We describe here the new species Luehea peruzziana Gerace, Bovini & Baumgratz, endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, and restricted to the state of Espírito Santo, in the south-eastern region of the country. Morphological description, illustration with details of vegetative and reproductive structures, and comments on taxonomy, distribution, phenology, and conservation status are provided. Furthermore, given the morphological similarity with L. ochrophylla Mart., a comparative analysis between these two taxa is reported
