No full textGemma Frisius (1508–1555), who worked at the university of Louvain, heard about the Copernican system already around 1530 and afterwards was a careful reader of the Narratio prima and the De Revolutionibus. The article argues that his posthumous preface to the Ephemerides (1556) by his pupil Stadius expresses his ultimate opinion on the system of the world. Moreover, it is also the only text where he tackles the epistemological problems of the question. A careful analysis of this preface shows that at the end of his life, on the ground of observations as well as philosophical demands, he admitted at least the first two movements ascribed to the earth by Copernicus

No full textGemma Frisius (1508-1555) est le fondateur de l'école belge de géographie (comprenant Mercator et Ortelius), l'éditeur-continuateur de la Cosmographie de Pierre Apian (plus de 80 éditions et traductions) et auteur du manuel d'arithmétique le plus vendu au XVIe sièvle. Il était aussi fabricant de globes, de mappemondes et d'instruments divers, inventeur de nouvelles méthodes de triangulation topographique, d'établissement de la longitude géographique et d'orientation sur mer. Enfin, il a été un des premiers lecteurs de Copernic, qu'il a copieusement annoté, et un des tout premiers à adhérer à son système du monde. Malgré ces mérites - et quelques autres -, qui lui assuraient une réputation européenne, aucun ouvrage ne lui a été consacré depuis la précieuse étude bio-bibliographique de Fernand Van Ortroy, parue en 1920 et rééditée en 1966, où il partage les honneurs avec son fils Cornelius et ses neveux, les Arsenius. Des articles sporadiques ont bien fait avancer la connaissance que nous avons de lui sur des points précis, mais aucune vue d'ensemble plus récente n'existe. Le livre que voici voudrait contribuer à combler cette lacune. L'oeuvre scientifique de Gemma Frisius y est envisagée en ell-même, mais également dans le contexte de l'art et de l'humanisme de la Renaissance, car l'objectif consiste aussi à ouvrir des perspectives et à inviter à continuer la réflexion
