By relating the state rescaling processes to the issues of urban entrepreneurialism and urban spatial forms, this paper also looks at the urban-geographical changes that have taken place in the city centre during the late 1990s as well as its regional growth over the past two decades. In the Chinese political-economic context, rescaling of state spaces is the crux of its 'urban' question. As the Guilin case reveals, while place-specific attributes are being mobilized towards local development, rescaled state institutions as well as a multi-scalar policy-making framework have largely determined its post-reform developmental trajectory.Since the late 1970s when China adopted the reform and opening-up policy, tourism-based urban growth has stimulated a new type of politico-economic geography in some parts of the country. Based on the case study of a leading Chinese tourist city, namely Guilin, this paper examines how a series of state spatial processes have shaped its urban-regional development through to the new millennium.張丞國.Adviser: Tai Lok Lui.Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 72-10, Section: A, page: .Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2009.Includes bibliographical references (p.187-207).Electronic reproduction. Cardiovascular Mortality Risk in Patients with Bladder Cancer: A Population-Based Study
Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of cardiovascular mortality (CVM) among patients with bladder cancer (BC). Methods and Materials: Data were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database for patients who were diagnosed with BC by pathology between 2000 and 2016. The standardized mortality rate (SMR) was calculated based on reference data from the general population. Nelson–Aalen cumulative hazard curves were used to assess the risk of experiencing CVM in BC patients. Multivariate competing risk models were performed. Results: In total, data from 237,563 BC patients were obtained from the SEER database for further analysis, of which 21,822 patients experienced CVM; the overall SMR for CVM in BC patients was 1.16 (95% CI: 1.14–1.17). Age, race, sex, year of diagnosis, histologic type, summary stage, surgery, marital status, and college education level were independent predictors of CVM in patients with BC. Conclusions: Patients with BC have a significantly increased risk of experiencing CVM compared to the general population. Pre-identification of high-risk groups and cardiovascular protection interventions are important measures to effectively improve survival in this group of patients
Malignant priapism secondary to metastatic colon adenocarcinoma: a case report
Background and objective: Priapism is an uncommon urological emergency,
and is even less commonly caused by colon adenocarcinoma metastasis. The aim of
this article is to report a case of malignant priapism caused by metastatic colon
adenocarcinoma.
Methods and materials: Case sharing and clinical experience summary of
a 61-year-old man with priapism and hematuria persisting for more than 30 days
presented to our hospital in September 2019.
Results: The patient did not have a history of perineal trauma, nervous
system disease, or hematological system disease. Penile Doppler ultrasound showed
no obvious blood flow signal, and penile arterial blood gas parameters were pH of
7.01, partial pressure of oxygen of 26 mmHg, and partial pressure of carbon
dioxide of 71 mmHg, suggesting the occurrence of ischemic priapism.
Abdominopelvic computed tomography enhancement images showed a localized
irregular shape and high-density imaging of the root of the corpus cavernosum.
Histopathology after cystoscopy confirmed the metastasis of colon adenocarcinoma.
Superselective embolization of the internal pudendal artery was performed, which
partially relieve the abnormal penile erection, but drug treatment did not
significantly alleviate the patient’s priapism.
Conclusion: Priapism secondary to metastatic colon adenocarcinoma
suggests systemic dissemination, indicative of a poor prognosis. In such cases,
unnecessary surgery should be avoided. Superselective embolization could be an
optional treatment for priapism secondary to cancer

Surgical success was defined as 1) intraocular pressure (IOP) ≥6 and ≤21 mmHg; 2) IOP reduction of at least 30% relative to preoperative values; and 3) without the need for additional surgical intervention for IOP control, loss of light perception, or serious complications. Results: Fourteen eyes of eleven patients were studied. Preoperatively, the average axial length was 27.71±1.52 (25.56–30.80) mm, corneal diameter was 14.71±1.07 (13.0–16.0) mm, cup-to-disc ratio was 0.95±0.04 (0.9–1.0), and IOP was 39.5±5.7 (30–55) mmHg. The mean follow-up time was 18.29±10.96 (5–44, median 18) months. There were significant reductions in IOPs and the number of glaucoma medications (P<0.001) postoperatively. The IOPs after operation were 11.3±3.4, 13.6±5.1, 16.3±2.7, and 16.1±2.6 mmHg at 1 month, 6 months, 12 months, and 18 months, respectively. Kaplan–Meier estimates of the cumulative probability of valve success were 85.7%, 71.4%, and 71.4% at 6, 12, and 18 months, respectively. Severe surgical complications, including erosion of tube, endophthalmitis, retinal detachment, choroidal detachment, and delayed suprachoroidal hemorrhage, occurred in 28.6% cases. Conclusion: AGV implantation remains a viable option for patients with advanced primary congenital glaucoma unresponsive to previous surgical intervention, despite a relatively high incidence of severe surgical complications. Short-Term Observation of Ultrasonic Cyclocoagulation in Chinese Patients with End-Stage Refractory Glaucoma: A Retrospective Study
Purpose. To assess the efficacy and safety of HIFU-based ultrasonic cyclocoagulation in Chinese patients with end-stage refractory glaucoma. Method. Patients were recruited consecutively from May 2016 to May 2017 in the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center. Ultrasonic cyclocoagulation was performed on every patient, using the EyeOP1 ultrasound emitting device. Return visits were set at 1 day, 7 days, 1 month, and 3 months after the treatment. An intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction of ≥20% while IOP ≥ 5 mmHg was deemed as success. Mean IOP change was assessed. Efficacy of two modes (6 sectors and 8 sectors) was also compared. Complications were recorded for safety evaluation. Results. 61 eyes were treated in this study. The baseline IOP (mean ± SD) was 41.11 ± 10.65 mmHg. The percentage of IOP reduction after treatment was 29.2%, 43.2%, 34.8%, and 23.1% at 1 day, 7 days, 1 month, and 3 months, respectively. Overall success rate at 3 months was 50.0% (26/52). No significant difference was found between the 6 sectors group and the 8 sectors group in terms of the success rate (48.6% vs. 52.9%, p=0.768) as well as IOP reduction (p=0.417) at 3 months. Primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) had the highest success rate (80.0%, 12/15). Scleral thinning existed in 12 eyes, among which 2 developed hypotony (2 mmHg and 3 mmHg). Average pain score decreased massively compared with baseline data. Conclusion. With high percentage of IOP reduction and a good safety profile observed in our study, HIFU-based ultrasonic cyclocoagulation might become a promising alternative to cyclodestructive methods. Long-term efficacy and safety need further assessment. The study was registered with Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (http://www.chictr.org.cn; Registration number: ChiCTR-OOC-17014028)
Simulation Study on the Optimisation of Replenishment of Landscape Water with Reclaimed Water Based on Transparency
Water-scarce cities have fewer surface water (SW) resources available for ecological use, causing landscape water to deteriorate due to water shortage and fail to perform their intended landscape functions. As a result, many cities use reclaimed water (RW) to replenish them. However, this could cause concern among the people, as RW usually has higher nutrient concentrations, which may stimulate algae growth and deteriorate the aesthetic senses of the receiving water bodies. In order to assess the feasibility of using RW for this purpose, this study used Xingqing Lake in Northwest China as insight into the effect of RW replenishment on the visual landscape quality of urban landscape water. Water transparency (measured by SD) is used as an intuitive indicator to reflect the comprehensive influence of suspended solids and algae growth on the water’s aesthetic quality. Scenario analyses were carried out after calibrating and validating one-year data in MIKE 3 software with both SD and algae growth calculations, and the results showed that the low concentration of suspended matter in RW could compensate for the decrease in SD due to algal blooms caused by high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus, and the effect on SD is especially pronounced under conditions that are not conducive to algal growth, such as good flow conditions and low temperature. In addition, to meet a SD ≥ 70 mm, the total water inflow required can be significantly reduced with the optimal application of RW. It is also indicated that partial or complete utilization of RW to replace SW for replenishing the landscape water could be feasible from the viewpoint of landscape quality, at least for the landscape water investigated in this study. This can provide a method for the improvement to urban water management practices by using RW for replenishment in water-scarce cities
Gene Expression Profile Determination in Rat Retinal Tissue after Ocular Hypertension through Oligo Microarray
Increased intraocular pressure is the main cause of glaucoma development. However, the systemic information of genes related to ocular hypertension has not yet been clarified. In the present study, oligomicroarray determined the profile of gene expression in the retina after ocular hypertension. A rat ocular hypertension model was constructed through photocoagulation by diode lasers. On postoperative days 7, 35, 60, 90, 180 and 360, the intraocular pressure and the gene expression profile were determined using an ophthalmotonometer and an Oligochip containing 35,000 oligonucleotides, respectively. Oligochip reliability was verified by real-time PCR, and the Oligochip data were analyzed through functional distribution analysis. In our study, we found that the intraocular pressure was significantly increased in a time-dependent manner but returned to the normal level on postoperative day 360. We also found that 1,692 genes were differentially expressed, including 719 upregulated and 973 downregulated genes. The chi(2) value of gene clusters related to transport function is significantly higher than that of other gene clusters as determined through function distribution analysis, suggesting that this group of genes plays an important role in the repair process of the optical nerve. In conclusion, the gene expression pattern at different time points of ocular hypertension was determined, which may contribute to clarify the molecular mechanism of glaucoma and to establish better therapeutic strategies to treat glaucoma.
