    This essay attempts to highlight and explore Bob Chang\u27s implicit disclaimers for an Asian American legal scholarship situated within post-structuralism: that it is contingent, ironic, and yearns for a chimerical solidarity, these qualities should not lead to the conclusion that his claims lack positive vision, the narrative space that Chang advocates allows for creative articulations of Asian presence in America, in both theoretical and practical realms. Thus, after considering the nature of the misunderstanding between Chang and Chen, the author will turn briefly to one example of positive articulation-the diaspora perspective-and read it into Jim Chen\u27s text

    The Romantic Collective Author

    Although the romantic collective author is a much more elusive creature than its romantic individual counterpart, it can be discerned amidst the proliferation of expression on the Internet. This article first outlines the ways in which the romantic author effect operates through both its genius and its arbiter prongs within collaborative authorship practices in digital networks. It next turns to scientific collaboration, where this author effect is attenuated, to assess whether scientific authorship practices might contribute to a more realistic and less romantic understanding of expressive authorship practices. A subsequent case study of collaborative digital authorship by Wikipedia contributors uncovers some of the underlying social processes giving rise to Wikipedia’s position of collective genius and authority. Analysis of these collaborative authorship processes reveals implicit certification functions, which can obscure various biases that should be addressed in order to shape a more inclusive and reliable knowledge environment

    In this thesis, the critical phenomenon in Berry curvature of nonlinear systems that occurs at phase boundaries is described by using the Bogoliubov excitation of the semiquantal dynamics.     Intestinal monoacylglycerol metabolism: regulation and function

    Sn-2-MG is a major product of dietary lipid digestion, yet its intestinal metabolism has not been investigated beyond its anabolic processing. Recently, a potential for sn-2-MG catabolism in the enterocyte has been proposed. Thus, we examined the regulation of the two known MG metabolizing enzymes, monoacylglycerol acyltransferase (MGAT) and monoacylglycerol lipase (MGL), in mouse small intestine and liver during development and under nutritional modifications. Furthermore, intestinal MGL function was explored by generating transgenic mice (iMGL mice) overexpressing MGL specifically in small intestinal enterocytes. Dynamic changes in MG metabolism were observed during mouse ontogeny. Hepatic MGL and MGAT expression showed a reciprocal regulation under apparent transcriptional control whereas intestinal MG metabolism did not exhibit any inverse regulation: MGAT2 protein expression and activity were markedly induced during lactation, and then declined. MGL activity increased rapidly at birth and was maintained thereafter. Moreover, discordances in mRNA, protein, and activity levels of intestinal MGAT and MGL were observed, suggesting complex regulatory mechanisms involved in their expression. In addition, intestinal MGL was significantly up-regulated by a high fat diet, indicating its potential role in lipid assimilation. During high fat feeding, iMGL mice exhibited an obese phenotype secondary to hyperphagia and hypometabolic rate compared to wild type littermates. Dietary lipid absorption and intracellular TG reesterification in iMGL mice intestine were intact. Interestingly, the level of cellular 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG), one of the endocannabinoids (EC), and cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) expression were decreased in iMGL mice intestine. Antagonism of EC signaling is known to reduce appetite and adiposity, and MGL terminates EC signaling by hydrolyzing 2-AG. Here we have a paradox in that intestinal MGL induction caused a phenotype associated with EC system activation rather than termination. While the molecular mechanisms underlying this paradox remain to be elucidated, these studies are the first to indicate that intestinal MG levels significantly affect whole body energy balance via altering appetite and metabolic rate. Thus, we propose a new function for intestinal MG, in which MGL activity is associated with regulatory mechanisms for energy homeostasis, possibly through appetite signaling systems.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 117-130)

    Ph.D.Berry phases and gauge structures are fundamental quantum phenomena. In linear quantum mechanics the gauge field in parameter space presents monopole singularities where the energy levels become degenerate. In non-linear quantum mechanics, which is an effective theory of interacting quantum systems, there can be phase transitions and hence critical surfaces in the parameter space. We find that these critical surfaces result in a new type of gauge field singularity, namely, a conic singularity that resembles the big bang of a 2+1 dimensional de Sitter universe, with the fundamental frequency of Bogoliubov excitations acting as the cosmic scale, and mode softening at the critical surface, where the fundamental frequency vanishes, causing a causal singularity. Such conic singularity may be observed in various systems such as Bose-Einstein condensates, nonlinear optical systems, and molecular magnets.     The Cosmic Large-Scale Structure in X-rays (CLASSIX) Cluster Survey - IV. Superclusters in the local Universe at z ≤ 0.03

    It is important to map the large-scale matter distribution in the local Universe for cosmological studies, such as the tracing of the large-scale peculiar velocity flow, the characterisation of the environment for different astronomical objects, and for precision measurements of cosmological parameters. We used X-ray luminous clusters to map this matter distribution and find that about 51% of the groups and clusters are members of superclusters which occupy only a few percent of the volume. In this paper we provide a detailed description of these large-scale structures. With a friends-to-friends algorithm, we find eight superclusters with a cluster overdensity ratio of at least two with five or more galaxy group and cluster members in the cosmic volume out to z = 0.03. The four most prominent ones are the Perseus-Pisces, the Centaurus, the Coma, and the Hercules supercluster, with lengths from about 40 to over 100 Mpc and estimated masses of 0.6 − 2.2 × 1016 M⊙. The largest of these structures is the Perseus-Pisces supercluster. The four smaller superclusters include the Local and the Abell 400 supercluster and two superclusters in the constellations Sagittarius and Lacerta. We provide detailed maps, member catalogues, and physical descriptions of the eight superclusters. By constructing superclusters with a range of cluster sub-samples with different lower X-ray luminosity limits, we show that the main structures are always reliably recovered
