Daughter of fortune: Isabel Allende's popularity from a readership perspective
The primary aim of this thesis is to explore and critically interrogate Isabel Allende’s popularity cross-culturally in Britain and Spain. It analyses readers’ responses to Allende’s works as well as the discourses surrounding her public representation, an approach that is ‘readerly’ but must also take account of production and text. This approach is intended to further the understanding of Allende’s work which so far has always been analysed from a textual perspective. However, the relationship between Allende’s popularity, her texts, public representation and readers has not been yet analysed in detail. This thesis is innovative in other ways too. Methodologically, it approaches readers through the under studied cultural form of the reading group. It also incorporates a comparative dimension by looking at the reception of Allende in two different cultural contexts: the British and Spanish respectively. Finding out about Allende’s popularity has involved asking readers about their reading experiences as well as analysing the production of discourses around her public representation. Paul Ricoeur’s (1984, 1988) perspective on authorial intentions and readers’ responses to texts helps in understanding the intricacies surrounding what is involved in reading any text. It draws attention to Allende’s and her publishers’ authorial strategies, her ‘strategies of persuasion’ and the specificity of the lives and contexts of British and Spanish reading publics. Equally, this ‘readerly’ approach draws on feminist audience research and primarily on the work of Ien Ang and Janice Radway. Their work with viewers and readers respectively is particularly useful in establishing and developing methodological parameters for the study of reading groups. As a whole, this thesis contributes to the understanding of Allende’s cross-cultural popularity by situating readers at the centre
Category Specific Spatial Frequency Adaptation with Faces and Cars
Under the direction of Dr. Isabel Gauthier, PhD and Olivia Cheung, this experiment establishes new grounds in the theoretical debate of object perception—between the domain-specific hypothesis and the expertise hypothesis. Using spatial frequency adaptation, the results from this study will provide more evidence in support of the expertise hypothesis. The results will test whether expertise processing (here, face processing) is significantly different from object processing. Participants were adapted to a range of spatial frequencies (high/low) and an image category (face/car) to determine if adaptation effect would remain within the image category. Also, bird and car expertise was measured to analyze the interaction between expertise and category specific spatial frequency adaptation. While the correlations between adaptation and expertise were not significant, some adaptation effects were significant and support the need for further research.Thesis completed in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Honors Program in Psychological SciencesVanderbilt UniversityPsychological Science
Comparing Thompson's Thatcher effect with faces and non-face objects
Senior Honors Thesis Project, April 6, 2007.
Powerpoint poster by Elyssa Twedt, David Sheinberg, Isabel Gauthier accompanies thesis. The classical Thatcher effect (TE) is experienced when global inversion of a face makes it difficult to notice the local inversion of its parts (Thompson, 1980). The TE can be quantified by comparing the ease with which observers compare a normal and locally transformed image, when both images are shown upright versus inverted. Here we compared the classical TE for images of adult faces to a wide variety of other categories, including grimacing faces, baby faces, animal faces, buildings, scenes, and various types of letter-strings. If the TE reflects a special form of configural processing for faces, faces should show a much larger TE than all other categories. Error rates revealed larger TEs for letter-strings over all other categories. Within the letter-string categories, words showed a larger TE than non-words and low frequency words revealed a larger TE than high frequency words. Within the face categories, adult, grimacing, and baby faces showed comparable TEs whereas animal faces showed the largest TE. For objects, we observe TEs for all categories, but at smaller magnitudes. Our results suggest the TE is not exclusive to faces - it does not appear to uniquely depend on factors such as expertise or the grotesque appearance of the transformation.College of Arts & SciencePsychological Science
