    Mutations in a number of stress granule-associated proteins have been linked to various neurodegenerative diseases. Several of these mutations are found in aggregation-prone intrinsically disordered domains (IDRs) of these proteins. My studies have focused on two IDR-containing yeast stress granule proteins, Pab1 and Pbp1. I have introduced mutations designed to enhance aggregation of these proteins and observed effects on stress granule dynamics. Results suggest that these mutations affect IDR localization in the context of overexpression, but do not affect stress granule dynamics in an endogenous system. This has led to questions about how the proteostasis machinery affects stress granule dynamics

Mus.) – Indiana University, Music, 2020The purpose of this document is to examine composer Amy Williams’s current catalogue of solo piano works: Astoria, Brigid’s Flame, Cineshape 4, Falling, and Piano Portraits: Books 1 and 2. The goal of this research is to introduce the composer’s solo piano repertoire to a larger audience and to establish a general description of Williams’s musical language and style. In addition, the document includes background information about each piece as well as interpretive and technical guidance to support accurate and informed performances of Williams’ solo piano music. To accomplish these goals, the author has conducted and transcribed interviews with Williams that explore her biography and professional history, her compositional language, and specific information about the conception and composition of each piece. Analyses of each piece’s melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, formal, and narrative content are presented within each chapter, as well as practice and perfo rmance guidance. The performance suggestions result from the author’s own in-depth study and performance of the works as well as insight offered by the composer. The document begins with an introduction to Amy Williams and her musical work, and goes on to justify the importance of this study. The document then presents Williams’s biography and explains general observations and trends within her approach to composition as demonstrated by the solo piano pieces. Individual chapters dedicated to each of the five aforementioned works follow. The analysis of each piece is unique to that work’s content and structure and aims to offer performers a starting point to guide their deeper study of the music, rather than serving as a dogmatic doctrine to each aspect of the compositions

    The Role of Gopher Tortoise Burrows (Gopherus polyphemus) in Shaping Herpetofaunal Diversity in the Sandhills of Southeast Georgia

    Author\u27s abstract: Gopher Tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) are known to have large numbers of invertebrate and vertebrate species associated with their burrows. I compared herpetofaunal species diversity and richness at Gopher Tortoise burrows and random points not near burrows on a sandhill in Southeast Georgia. I also compared habitat structure between burrows and random arrays. Trapping took place from March 1, 2007 to August 30, 2007. Species richness for all months combined was significantly higher at Gopher Tortoise burrows than random arrays (Random = 3.60 ± 0.43, Burrow = 5.20 ± 0.57). Species diversity was not significantly different between burrow and random arrays; however, there was a trend showing higher diversity at burrows (Random = 0.67 ± 0.08, Burrow = 0.78 ± 0.06). Species diversity and richness were analyzed separately for each month. Species diversity and richness did not differ between months (March August) or between arrays. Percent canopy cover and plant species richness were significantly lower at Gopher Tortoise burrows, and there was a trend towards more ground cover at burrows as well. The results of this study show that species may take refuge in the burrow of the Gopher Tortoise, especially when temperatures are relatively low. This study has provided some evidence to support the status of the Gopher Tortoise as a keystone species in sandhill habitats

    Growth Hormone Genes and Prostate Cancer Risk

    Background: Growth hormone (GH) SNPs are associated with breast cancer and colon cancer. The author investigated the association of prostate cancer with genetic polymorphisms in GH SNPs in the Ancillary MrOS study. Methods: Included in the current investigation were 128 men with prostate cancer and 743 healthy men, 65 years of age or older. SNPs were tested in Growth Hormone 1 (GH1, n=4), Growth Hormone Receptors (GHR, n=15), Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone (GHRH, n=4), Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone Receptors (GHRHR, n=10), Ghrelin (GHRL, n=8), and Growth Hormone Secretagogue Receptor (GHSR, n=9) genes for an association with prostate cancer risk. SNPs were selected based on HapMap Phase 1 and based on functional variation. The SNPs were genotyped using Illumina Assay and were included if the minor allele frequency was 1% or greater. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine associations, adjusted for age, weight, BMI, truncal % fat, total % fat, and diabetes. Similarly, tests of trends and tests of dominant/recessive effect were performed. Results: After adjusting for potential confounding factors, two GH1 SNPs, one GHR SNP, one GHRH SNP, two GHRHR SNPs, one GHRL SNP, and one GHSR SNP showed significant associations with prostate cancer risk. Public Health Significance: If the relationships observed in this study are confirmed, it would justify the investigation of approaches that would reduce the activity of GH in those at high risk for prostate cancer. Conclusions: The results of the current study suggest that GH SNPs are associated with prostate cancer risk. This provides support for replication of these findings in other studies

    Risk - adjusted rates of return for project appraisal

    Incorporating risk assessment into public project appraisal makes sense when project risk is significantly correlated with uncertainty about national income. It is especially important in countries that specialize in particular agricultural or resource sectors. This report presents the following conclusions: (a) risk corrections can be substantial; (b) the intuition that risk is great for further investment in a crop or sector that constitutes a large part of a country's GNP is not invalid, but the effect may be offset by other forces in operation; (c) risk corrections can be negative because of a negative correlation between project return and GNP; (d) risk premia vary greatly across countries and sectors - so recognizing the risk correction needed for each project on its own merits makes more sense than including a common general risk premium in the rate of return required for all lending; (e) risk corrections are small for many sectors and countries - so efforts can be concentrated on the other categories, where the proposed treatment of risk makes a big difference; (f) risk affects investment projects in many different, subtle ways; and (g) resource requirements for this are not great.Environmental Economics&Policies,Health Economics&Finance,Banks&Banking Reform,Statistical&Mathematical Sciences,Crops&Crop Management Systems
