The influence of complexity, uncertainty, and munificence on long-term organizational resilience to natural disasters
The turbulent conditions of the external environment have placed unprecedented pressure on firms, drawing management scholars' attention to organizational resilience. This research aims to study if complexity, uncertainty, and munificence influence organizational resilience in terms of long-term firm survival. We performed a binary logistic regression using a database of 1,849 Italian joint-stock firms between 2014 and 2020, of which 89 received public funds as compensation for damages caused by natural disasters. We found that munificence in the context where firms operate is likely to increase their survival in the long term compared to the peers together with turnover, however, context complexity and uncertainty have not been found significant. The results shed light on the role of the context as an antecedent of organizational resilience
Conflicting narratives in car pathways: a case study of Italian stakeholders’ framings of the automotive low-carbon transition
Frame of the research. The pathways of low-carbon automotive transition are still uncertain. Different stakeholders’ framing influences the success of the solutions identified by regime or niche actors.
Purpose of the paper. This study aims to uncover stakeholders’ framing of the low-carbon transition in the automotive sector, with specific attention to servitization alternatives.
Methodology. We carried out a content analysis of the news articles published between 2020 and 2024 in major Italian newspapers: Corriere della Sera, ANSA financial news, ANSA business, and Milano Finanza.
Results. We found two broad narratives, one about the mobility transition within the urban areas and another about the automotive perspective. Depending on the actor and time, stakeholders’ views can differ. Even though electric car sales dominate the public discourse, other narratives emerged: a discourse surrounding car rental and electric scooter
sharing.
Research limitations. The analysis is limited to a specific case study and should be extended to a broader context. In addition, the analysis is limited to national newspapers included in the Nexis Uni database.
Managerial implications. These results suggest that mobility servitization is gaining legitimacy in public discourse and that if automotive incumbent firms continue delaying the transition, the regime might be destabilized and transformed by other actors.
Originality of the paper. While previous research mainly analyses the narratives about technical solutions of automotive low-carbon transition, we broaden the focus to alternative business models
Data from: Composition and functional diversity of macrofaunal assemblages on vertical walls of a deep northeast Pacific fjord
This dataset contains three types of data associated with Gasbarro et al. (2018) Marine Ecology Progress Series, collected from remotely operated vehicle imagery surveys in Douglas Channel, British Columbia, Canada. Biological data (i.e. animal abundance and size measurements) from photoquadrats, ROV/water column data (e.g. temperature, depth, dissolved oxygen, etc.) from four dives, and seasonal along-channel current data from a year-long deployment of two moored Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers comprise the three data types. Data was collected as part of an MSc thesis (Gasbarro)
GLORIA: A Graph Convolutional Network-Based Approach for Review Spam Detection
Spam reviews contain untruthful content created with malevolent intent, to affect the overall reputation of a product, service or company. This content is commonly made by malicious users or automated programs (i.e., bots) that mimic human behaviour. With the recent boom of online review systems, performing accurate review spam detection has become of primary importance for a review platform, to mitigate the effect of malicious users responsible for untruthful content. In this work, we propose a review spam classification approach, named GLORIA, that adopts a graph representation of review data and trains a graph convolutional neural network for edge classification as a review spam detection model. In particular, GLORIA represents both users (i.e., authors of reviews) and products (i.e., reviewed items) as nodes of a heterogeneous graph, while it represents reviews as graph edges that connect each author of a review to the reviewed item. Features of users, products and reviews are associated with nodes and edges, respectively. Experiments performed on publicly available review datasets prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared with some state-of-the-art approaches
The mutual influence of Environmental Management Systems and the EU ETS: Findings for the Italian pulp and paper industry
The European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is designed to be a flexible and efficient mechanism to encourage carbon-intensive industries to reduce CO2 emissions cost-effectively. Similarly, Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) are well-established tools designed to improve the efficiency of the environmental performance of companies. Up to now, knowledge of the mutual influences of strategic planning, ETS management and EMSs is still incomplete, and their implications are not fully understood. This study tries to identify whether the involvement of a firm in the ETS with the adoption of an EMS favors the generation of corporate strategic synergies in terms of organizational management and environmental planning. Due to a relatively short time frame and the need for exploratory research, a multiple case study emerged as the most suitable approach. Hence various Italian pulp and paper companies involved in the EU ETS were interviewed and analyzed. We found that organizations that integrate ETS management and EMS tend to establish satisfactory standards and procedures that are relevant for environmental monitoring and compliance. However not all ETS-related activities are integrated into EMSs. In addition, despite some mutual synergies, these are not sufficient for determining corporate environmental planning
