Graves’ Sejanus. Il prefetto del pretorio di Tiberio nel romanzo I, Claudius

    No full text
The figure of Lucius Aelius Seianus, the praefect of the praetorium of Tiberius, is of remarkable importance in Robert Graves' novel I, Claudius. From the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius, published in1934. The approach between the historical and the fictional by Graves, a great-grandson of Leopold von Ranke, is particularly interesting for a controversial character such as the 'evil' praefect described in the sources. If in some cases the author merely dramatizes the account of ancient historiography, which the novelist knows very well; elsewhere he amplifies the role of Tiberius' right-hand man. Even more interesting are the episodes that, although without documentary basis, are nonetheless entirely plausible. Graves views the knight Sejanus as a parvenu and in a decidedly snobbish manner, perhaps influenced by his knowledge of Oxonian circles. In Claudius' awareness – Lucius Aelius had been no worse a villain than others and darker times with a Caligula 'educated' by Tiberius were approaching – we might perhaps glimpse the awareness of equally dark times that Graves, from his Majorcan retreat, saw looming for Europe in the early 1930s.La figura di Lucio Elio Seiano, il prefetto del pretorio di Tiberio, ha un’importanza notevole nel romanzo di Robert Graves I, Claudius. From the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius del 1934.

This contribution aims to clarify the role of Tiberio Alfarano († 1596) in the context of the Vatican Basilica and its clergy, to which he belonged as chierico beneficiato. In particular, this research investigates Alfarano’s autograph manuscripts preceding the Descriptio of 1582, with a particular focus on the biographical profile of the author. These manuscripts, many of which are held in the Archive of Saint Peter’s Chapter, display the progressive evolution of Alfarano’s work during the papacy of Gregory XIII Boncompagni (1572-1585). Starting from the Jubilee of 1575, this Pontiff left a fundamental mark in aint Peter’s Basilica, in terms of both the construction of the new building, and the renewal of worship inside of it. In this period, Alfarano’s ambitions and range of interests hit a turning point. Indeed, as the construction of the new Saint Peter’s Basilica continued, Tiberio Alfarano showed an increased awareness of the importance of his work for the preservation of the historical memory of the Old Basilica of Saint Peter. In addition, he stressed the connection between him - as a member of the Chapter - and the liturgical choices of the pope

Examining Classroom Observation Instruments for English Language Learners: An Example of Proposing Causal Structure Pertaining to Pedagogy

    No full text
The purpose of this dissertation study was to describe teacher pedagogy through the use of systematic review, observation data, and to comment on causal structure. Three objectives were necessary: the assessment of the literature of classroom observation instruments used in observing English language learners, using archival classroom observation data from Project Middle School Science for English Language Learners (MSSELL), and the casual commentary of teachers pedagogy during Project MSSELL. The Project MSSELL is a randomized, longitudinal, field-based, National Science Foundation (NSF) funded research project (NSF Award No. DRL-0822343; 2009-2010). Included in the project was archived data for the pedagogy of eight grade 5 teachers during a science intervention. The observation protocol, Transitional Bilingual Observation Protocol (TBOP), used in the project is theoretically derived from the transitional bilingual observation model (Lara-Alecio & Parker, 1994), and measures classroom frequency events in four instruction domains: Language of Instruction, Language Content, Communication Mode, and Activity Structure. The data for this dissertation are taken from both a treatment and control group. The treatment group is comprised of four teachers participating in the intervention associated with Project MSSELL, while the control group is comprised of four teachers not participating in the intervention. By conducting the following: (a) systematic review of classroom observation instruments evaluating classrooms with English language learners (ELL); (b) frequency analysis in classroom events during Project MSSELL; and (c) commentary of the causal inference for the project in relation to teachers pedagogy, the researcher further describes the projects feasibility toward pedagogy conducive to ELL academic achievement. Results from this study implicate treatment teachers, when compared to control teachers, focus more on writing as a way of communication between the student and teacher. Additionally, through a systematic review of classroom observations instruments, the researcher highlights the TBOPs strength toward recording pedagogy. Through causal commentary the researcher converts Project MSSELL into a simple causal structure to indicate the causal effects at the local level. The resultant commentary provided further insight into teachers pedagogy during Project MSSELL. The data for this dissertation are taken from both a treatment and control group. Plotting the Centre: Bramante’s Drawings for the New St. Peter’s Basilica

    No full text
This paper examines the concept of 'centre' in the design and symbolism of the new St Peter's Basilica, executed by Donato Bramante in the early 16th century. Drawing upon theological and philosophical notions of centre in late Medieval and Renaissance culture (specifically Nicolas Cusanus), the study argues that Bramante's drawings for the project reveal a particular understanding of centre, and its constellations of sub-centres, that broadly follow Platonic cosmological principles highlighted in the Timaeus. The paper considers how this understanding of space was also communicated in the iconography of the frescoes in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican Palace, executed by Raphael at the same time as Bramante's design for the new basilica, in which Bramante is also credited as the author of the perspective construction

Views from the Cheap Seats: Understanding the Key Motivators Behind Sport Volunteering

    No full text
Sport volunteers are imperative to the success of sport mega events. Knowing why volunteers continue to help events was the purpose of this study. This study aimed to investigate the motivations of sport volunteers post Covid-19. Data were collected from 30 volunteers at the 2023 NCAA College World Series. Inductive qualitative analysis and descriptive statistics found that community support was the reason the respondents were most glad to volunteer. The findings offered insight into how communication factors between supervisors, law enforcement, and other volunteers affected volunteer motivation. The theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed in more detail in the manuscript. Key words: sport mega events, College World Series, NCAA Baseball, volunteer motivation, human resource management Acknowledgments: The authors would like to acknowledge College World Series Inc. and the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation for their participation in this study and the pilot study

We Need to Be in the Classroom More”: Veteran Teachers’ Views on Teacher Preparation and Retention

    No full text
Annual teacher attrition hovers around 8% and causes of teacher attrition have been studied widely. However, more needs to be known about specific aspects of teacher preparation that can foster retention. The goal of this study was to understand the perspectives of veteran teachers regarding retention. This investigation employed semi-structured interviews with teachers who graduated from a south western university and who have persisted in their teaching careers in a large, urban school district. Our analyses conveyed that rich field experiences and particular characteristics of mentor teachers can foster retention; however, these persisters also persevered through inauthentic teacher preparation experiences

Enrique Bernardo Núñez o la nueva novela histórica hispanoamericana (1931-1938)

Venezuelan polygrapher Enrique Bernardo Núñez is a rather unknown author whose novels Cubagua (1931) and La galera de Tiberio (1938) are worth considering. My article tries to demonstrate how interesting and rich they are, especially for their complex and suggestive articulation of time and myth, and stresses the essential role they play in the (pre)history of the so-called 'new historical novel'.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
