Creating a national crime fiction through allegory translation: from Sherlock Holmes, the western detective to Relentless Avni, the turkish Sherlock Holmes

No full text
We aim to examine Ebussureyya Sami's Relentless Avni, the Turkish Sherlock Holmes, the first Turkish crime fiction series in the Turkish literary system published in the late Ottoman Era, with a focus on allegory translation in crime fiction. Despite being considered as original in the Turkish literary system, the series under investigation raises the issue of whether it is "original" due to its similarities to western crime novels. Studies on crime fiction translation show that the genre is an important tool for creating national allegories which can be transformed into other allegories through translation. We argue that the series, albeit having been considered "original" in the Turkish literary system, constitutes an example of allegory translation produced through creative mediation due to the absence of an established crime fiction tradition in the Turkish literature at the time. The comparative analysis of the series and their western counterparts reveals that Ebussureyya Sami, the author-translator, transformed a Western-oriented allegory into a new national allegory for the readers to create a culture repertoire with a specific emphasis on Turkishness in line with the National Literature Movement and nationalist modernization in the Turkish target culture and the protagonist Relentless Avni, the Turkish Sherlock Holmes functioned as a contributor to "culture planning" by providing a role model of a nationalist modern Turkish citizen

Dreams, which are of age with human history, are one of the general and characteristic features of sleep and are both visual and auditory perceptions and emotions that have a close relationship with the REM (rapid eye movement) phase of sleep. Dreams have always been on the agenda of mankind throughout history and have attracted the interest and curiosity of societies. The work that combines academic studies on dreams from psychological and philosophical perspectives and elevates them to the level of Sufism has caught our attention, prompting the need to introduce and analyze it. The author thoroughly examines the meaning of dreams under the headings of Turkish, Islam, and Sufism, highlighting its differences from other works in the literature. The abstract nature of dreams and the difficulty in concretizing them narrow the field of academic research. The author bravely addresses these challenges with a bold title in their work. But in contrast, a dream is a concept that the scientific world still cannot fully understand the biological content, functioning and purpose of today. The definition, nature and interpretation of dreams have been considered from different angles by various fields, and as a result, a wide collection has been inherited for those who want to do research about dreams to this day. Hasan Avni Yüksel, the author whose work we are discussing, has also taken the subject of dreams to a Turkish-Islamic dimension in this context and tried to explain the connection between the dream and both the Islamic religion and the science of Sufism. Dec. The work consists of five parts, except the introduction. At the beginning of the study, the nature of the dream as a word and concept was explained collectively by using different sources, and its place in various civilizations and religions was indicated. In the first part, the way the dream is perceived in the culture of Turkish communities, in the next part, the nature of the dream, the studies on the dream in the West, the science of interpretation and the characteristics of interpreters are focused on. In the third part, the author tried to evaluate the relevance of the dream to the sharia decrees, the concept of the dream in Islam and the perspectives of Islamic scholars on the dream, and in the next part he examined the nature of the dream in lodges and sects. In the fifth section, selections from different types of dreams interpreted by the phrases are included in the work. The author has tried to cover the subject of dreams in as much detail as possible through the Turkish-Islamic Sufi tradition and has added a dictionary to the end of the book explaining the difficult-to-understand words in the text in order to make it easier for the reader

Epidural drug delivery catheter malfunctions are a principal causeof therapy interruption. In this case report; we present the treatment of apatient with cancer pain during epidural port injection with hyaluronidase. Methods:Inthis case report, a 53-year-old female patient with peritoneal carsinomatozishad severe abdominal and back pain. Medical treatment consisting of 100 mcgfentanil patch and 150 mg/day pregabalin was inefficient. An epidural port wasplaced on the patient at the thoracic level, guided by fluoroscopy.Threemonths after the procedure, the patient started to complain of pain in his backduring the drug injection. It was thought that the pain might be due toepidural fibrosis.Epiduralsteroid was administered to the patient, but there was no reduction in pain.Afterwards, epidural hyaluronidase was applied to the patient. There was asignificant decrease in the patient's pain (VAS: decreased from 7 to 1). After2 months, the injection pain started again, and the hyaluronidase injection wasre-administered and the patient again benefited. ResultsEpiduralcatheters and port systems are beneficial for long term analgesia however thereare important complications such as painful epidural injection and epiduralfibrosis.Incases of painful epidural injection and epidural fibrosis, epidural steroidinjection is used to reduce pain.Hyaluronidasemoves barrier between tissues by hydrolyzing glucosaminicbonds betweenhyaluronicacid, a major inter cellular material, and connective tissues todissolve the bonds and relieve fibroplasia in tissues. Itis also known that hyaluronidase acts to relieve swelling and edema in tissues.Hyaluronidaseis being used to treat spinal stenosis and failed back / epidural adhesions inalgology.Inthis case, we tried fibrinolytic effect of hyaluronidase for epidural fibrosis. ConclusionsWeconcluded that epidural hyaluronidase can be an option when other methods havefailed in the treatment of injection pain in a cancer patient with an epiduralport. Step 6 / 8:KeywordsHyaluronidase,Cancer Pain, Painful epidural injection Step 7 / 8:AdditionalFiles Step 8 / 8:Preview &Check</p

Background: Hydatidiform mole (HM) is the most frequently encountered disease among gestational trophoblastic diseases. HM can invade myometrium and result in hysterectomy and because of the absence of any predictive method, the disease can be lately diagnosed in the periphery. Author aimed to evaluate predictive value of the inflammatory cell counts in molar pregnancies in this study. Methods: Nineteen (19) cases with histopathologic HM diagnosis and 19 cases of control group with pregnancy termination or abortion material reached to a university hospital's pathology department on the same day were included in the study. The data on the same day or the day before the operation was used as the hemogram data. Results: The mean age of the cases were 33.84±8.477. The mean of neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, basophil and eosinophil numbers of the HM group and control group were compared in the 95% confidence interval with the independent t test. No statistical significance was observed in any of the inflammatory cell means (p>0.05). The ratio of lymphocyte means was statistically significant (p=0.006).Conclusions: In this study, author assessed whether the inflammatory cell counts were a predictive in detecting HM. The statistically significant results that author founded in the means of lymphocyte, suggests that this finding may be predictive of early diagnosis. They concluded that this result can be routinely used after the confirmation of the results in larger series of cases

LADM-based Israeli Country Profile: Toward Implementation of 3D Cadastre Registration

No full text
Land is a valuable and finite resource, particularly in a small country such as Israel. A variety of drives, such as: urbanization and smart utilization of space, is prompting the stakeholders to promote new land policies. These policies should reflect the societal needs and demands as well as factor in and balance between numerous aspects. Furthermore, in recent years the ecological angle, forest and species preservation have become more and more acute, urging in turn for an even stricter land related actions. In most countries around the world - Israel being no exception - land administration system is a decentralized one, that is to say, multiple organizations and government departments are involved. In Israel the spatial component is under the authority of Survey of Israel, whereas the Land Registry Offices, with the Ministry of Justice, are in charge of the legal aspects of land administration. However, there are several more players to consider, such as: Israeli Land Authority which is responsible for the managing of approximately 93 percent of all land; the Planning Administration and Planning Commissions - on both national and local levels - which need up-to-date cadastral and land use information for spatial planning, urban and rural development and adequate allocation of land; and finally the entrepreneurs and private citizens, who too require access to the relevant land data. To ensure consistency in access to data, as well as sharing and exchange thereof, institutional interoperability is crucial. Informed decision making, effective and efficient management of land resources and ultimately economic development and sustainability of a country are dependent on it. In order to achieve this cross-organizational coherence a model-driven approach is required.Land Administration Domain Model (LADM) - ISO 19152 standard, a conceptual model which incorporates both legal and spatial components, offers a common language and provides a solid foundation for establishing a national Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI).This paper describes the development of an LADM-based Israeli country profile, in light of the amendment to the Land Law of 1969 which allows the registration of 3D parcels and calls for new affiliated regulations and the utilization of new technologies. An overview of the existing land administration system key components and procedures as well as ongoing and planned enhancements are given.GIS Technologi

The Effect of Peer Instruction on Conceptual and Operational Approaches Preferred in Problem Solutions

No full text
The level of using conceptual and operational knowledge is of great importance in the problem-solving process. The previous studies on the measurement of conceptual and operational knowledge, have been, especially examining the problem solutions or in discussing the views. On the other hand, rich learning environments should be established to overcome such difficulties in teaching mathematics in general and analytical geometry in particular. In this study, the researchers provide useful information to the literature since this study aimed to examine quantitatively, whether the peer instruction in analytic geometry has any effect on the conceptual and operational approaches of secondary school mathematics teacher candidates in problem solving. The sample of the research is composed of (including 22 females, and 1 males) secondary school mathematics teacher candidates. Considering the advantages of technological resources on learning, the learning management system (LMS) designed by the second author, was used during the question-answer process. Before the application, the course content was integrated into the online learning management system (LMS). The teacher candidates were divided into groups before the application. In this research, the first group will be presented in the context of the research problem. In the first group, the scores of the prospective teachers who wanted to use the second right to answer were not reduced. Conceptual & Operational Approach towards Problem-Solving scale, developed by Özyıldırım Gümüş and Umay (2018) was used as the data collection tool. One of the two options is conceptual and the other one is the operational. Thus, it is possible to decide on approaches from the responses. Since the value of this approach could be related with the data set, the cut-off point was determined by the ROC curve method in SPSS program and the data were analyzed descriptively by the reference to this cut-off point. It has been determined that the secondary school mathematics teacher candidates display a conceptual knowledge-based approach through peer instruction.</jats:p
