    First order reversal curves and intrinsic parameter determination for magnetic materials: limitations of hysteron-based approaches in correlated systems

    The generic problem of extracting information on intrinsic particle properties from the whole class of interacting magnetic fine particle systems is a long standing and difficult inverse problem. As an example, the Switching Field Distribution (SFD) is an important quantity in the characterization of magnetic systems, and its determination in many technological applications, such as recording media, is especially challenging. Techniques such as the first order reversal curve (FORC) methods, were developed to extract the SFD from macroscopic measurements. However, all methods rely on separating the contributions to the measurements of the intrinsic SFD and the extrinsic effects of magnetostatic and exchange interactions. We investigate the underlying physics of the FORC method by applying it to the output predictions of a kinetic Monte-Carlo model with known input parameters. We show that the FORC method is valid only in cases of weak spatial correlation of the magnetisation and suggest a more general approach

    Mapping the Discipline of the Olympic Games An Author-Cocitation Analysis

    The authors conducted an author cocitation analysis on prominent authors writing about the Olympics during the 1990s. Author cocitation is an established bibliometric technique that can be used to measure the relative similarities of topics written about by the cited authors. This enables a visual representation of the “intellectual space” of the discipline, in this case the Olympics, to be created for the period under review. So core and peripheral research areas are identified, along with their major contributors. The representation appears as a two-dimensional cluster-enhanced map. Subject expertise was then applied to the results to place labels on the generated clusters of authors and their topics

    Public perception of the appropriateness of COVID-19 management strategies and level of disturbances in daily activities: A focus on educational level

    Background This study investigated the association between public perception of the appropriateness of management strategies implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic and the level of disturbances in daily activities reported by the general population. Methods This cross-sectional study used Korea Community Health Survey conducted from August to November 2020. Public perception of COVID-19 management strategies included those implemented by the government (central, city or provincial, and administrative districts), the mass media, regional medical institutions, and neighbors. The subjective level of disturbances in daily activities was measured using a 0–100 numeric rating scale developed by Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Multivariable linear regression analysis was used. A subgroup analysis was conducted based on education level. Results The present study analyzed 211,353 participants. Compared to individuals who perceived that the management strategies implemented during the pandemic was ‘highly appropriate,’ those who reported ‘mediocre appropriateness’ (β: -1.96, p-value: <0.001) or ‘low appropriateness’ (β: -3.60, p-value: 0.010) reported higher levels of subjective disturbances. The appropriateness of measures implemented by the mass media was associated with levels of subjective disturbances felt by individuals of lower education with statistical significance, whereas that applied by the mass media and the government were important in those with higher education. Conclusions The findings suggest the importance of public perception of management strategies when implementing containment policies and minimizing its disturbances on daily lives is essential. © 2023 Ju et al.     Rare is Beautiful?The Relationship between the Rareness of Technological Resources and the Value of the Resources (presented by co-author)

    (Presented by co-author) We examine firms’ development of a rare technological resource and substantiate the mechanisms through which the development of a rare technological resource leads to the creation of valuable resources, a critical source of competitive advantage. In particular, we conceptualize value creation and its sustainability at the resource level, clarifying the link between resource development and value generation. We build our theory exploiting the fundamental tension in the strategic factor market, where firms obtain others’ resources to develop their own resources and at the same time, strive to isolate their resources from potential competitors. We argue that the degree of rareness of a technological resource has an inverted U-shape relationship with the value of the resource, and the sustainability of that value, as reflected by temporal duration and breadth of the adopted fields. Our analysis utilizing the topic modeling method to operationalize the rareness at the time of a resource development is based on over 4,000 U.S. nanotechnology patents. The result provides strong support for hypotheses. We contribute to literature by converting conceptual and empirical conflation between resource characteristics and resource-generated values in the resource-based view literature to testable hypotheses
