No full textIl libro di Claudio Gambini su Ettore Reina è un libro molto importante; non solo importante dal punto di vista della storiografia, ma anche e soprattutto importante dal punto di vista dell’attualità politica. L’attualità del lavoro di Gambini è contro ogni apparenza (come accade per tutte le cose vere), anzi, a prima vista nulla sembrerebbe più inattuale che dare conto (con una ricerca difficile, appassionata, documentatissima) della vita e della militanza di un quadro dirigente del Partito Socialista e del sindacato il quale ha svolto la parte cruciale della sua attività negli anni a cavallo fra Otto e Novecento, in un contesto produttivo e politico-sociale certo assai diverso dal nostro. Ma l’interesse e l’attualità politica del lavoro di Gambini consiste in due elementi: anzitutto si tratta in questo libro di un inizio, cioè del momento liminare in cui una massa disgregata di uomini e donne oppressi e sfruttati, «un volgo disperso che nome non ha», si guarda in volto, si riconosce, alza la testa, si organizza, produce suoi intellettuali organici, insomma diventa una classe. Io credo che non si possa guardare a questo processo collettivo senza interesse e, se posso dirlo, senza commozione. Un tempo, quando subivamo ancora l’egemonia ideale del progressismo evoluzionista ed ottimista (la vera causa delle nostre sconfitte – come ci ha insegnato Benjamin) potevamo anche credere che quel processo non ci riguardasse più, e forse potevamo anche sorridere paternalisticamente di quegli incerti e difficoltosi inizi; ora invece capiamo che non c’è nulla del nostro passato che non sia anche nel nostro presente e nel nostro futuro e, di più!, sappiamo che nessuna conquista è mai definitiva e consolidata irreversibilmente, e anzi che la lotta di classe e le conquiste dei lavoratori somigliano ad un elastico, che se non è più tenuto in tensione dalle lotte del presente tende a ritornare indietro, allo status quo ante, e talvolta assai dolorosamente...
E siamo così al secondo elemento dell’importanza del lavoro di Gambini: la sua capacità di far rivivere almeno uno (fra i tanti) protagonisti di «una storia senza eroi». Proprio questa storia senza eroi è, mi sembra, quella di cui abbiamo bisogno, perché essa è l’altra storia, o, se si vuole, l’unica storia vera, cioè quella «tradizione degli oppressi» che la storiografia ufficiale trascura, e vuole trascurare, perché – come scrive Benjamin – essa è «la storiografia dei vincitori», cioè del potere che celebra e giustifica se stesso. Per poter far questo, cioè per celebrare il bottino dei potenti, la storia con la s maiuscola deve costruire e diffondere l’oblio sulle vicende degli uomini e delle donne vere, senza nome, che però sono quelli che costruiscono la vera storia del mondo, la vicenda secolare e interminata della fuoruscita dalla subalternità. Patient profile modulates cardiac c-kit (+) progenitor cell availability and amplification potential
No full textHuman c-kit(+) cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs) are multipotent and may be used for cardiac repair. The effect of cardiovascular risk factors and medications on CPCs isolation efficiency, c-kit stem cell marker expression, and ex vivo proliferative potential is unknown and was examined in the present work. Cells from human right atrial appendages (n = 50) were expanded in culture; after similar to 16 days (T0), it was established the percentage of CPCs and c-kit protein mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) by fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS). Thereafter, CPCs were isolated by high throughput sorting; after culturing for 4 passages CPCs-derived cells were re-analyzed to assess c-kit+ cell percentage and enrichment vs TO. The association between 19 demographic and clinical variables to CPCs number and MFI at TO, and CPCs enrichment at P4, was determined by multiple linear regression analysis with stepwise selection procedure. The results revealed that (1) at TO, the number of isolated CPCs directly correlated to beta-blocker treatment; (2) at TO, c-kit protein expression directly correlated to pulmonary hypertension (PH); (3) at P4, CPC's enrichment inversely correlated to smoke, atrial fibrillation (AF), a history of myocardial infarction, whereas it directly correlated to PH and statins. Patient clinical profile and medications differently modulate CPCs isolation and amplification potential ex vivo. These results may provide new insights for the understanding of cardiac homeostasis and suggest both limitations and possible enhancing strategies for the therapeutic use of cardiac-resident progenitor cells

Prognostic value of the clinical features and the pathological diagnostic criteria for smooth muscle tumors of the uterus: a morphological and statistical study
No full textThere is lack of complete agreement in the literature on the prognostic value of the morphological criteria adopted for diagnosis of malignant cellular smooth muscle tumors of the uterus (CSMTU's).
The aims of this study are to correlate with statistical methods the morphological features of 21 consecutive cases of borderline and malignant CMTUs to each other, to age and menopausal status of the patients and to clinical evolution of disease; furthermore, to assess the predictive value of the morphological characteristics considered in the two major classification systems of CMSTUs.
The features significantly correlated to progression of disease are: the presence of necrosis and hemorrhage, moderate or severe degrees of atypia and of pleomorphism, cellularity and a mitotic index above 6.28 MF/mm2.
Necrosis and hemorrhage, mitotic index, atypia, pleomorphism and cellularity are all significantly and positively correlated to one another. The classes of the two major classification systems of CMSTUs are correlated significantly to outcome of disease, to each other and to most of the aforementioned prognostically meaningful features of CSMTUs.
The only morphological feature to be significantly influenced by the age and menopausal status of the patient at diagnosis is the level of mitotic index. Premenopausal women have significantly lower mean mitotic counts than postmenopausal patients regardless of outcome of disease.
The length of survival free of disease is significantly associated to menopausal status and is also related to the degree of pleomorphism.
The results of this study indicate that the presence of necrosis and hemorrhage, the degree of atypia, pleomorphism and cellularity and the level of mitotic index are all equally expressing the malignant potential of CSMTUs, therefore these features should all be evaluated in the diagnosis of these tumors
