Amphipod assemblage under the influence of desalination plants in the south-eastern Mediterranean

A check-list of amphipod assemblage, collected in the vicinity of two Israeli desalination plant marine outfalls, is provided with some notes about the species. The dataset highlights changes in species composition throughout the years, possibly due to local anthropogenic impacts

The northernmost record of the blue-spotted cornetfish from the Mediterranean Sea

A school of Fistularia commersonii was sighted off Laigueglia (Italy), Northwestern Ligurian Sea, in August 2008. This fast spreading invasive Indo-Pacific fish was first recorded in the Mediterranean from Israel, and it has since spread clear across the sea. This is the northernmost record from the Mediterranean

Geometric morphometry supports a taxonomic revision of the Mediterranean Bathyporeia guilliamsoniana (Spence Bate, 1857) (Amphipoda, Bathyporeiidae)

Bathyporeia guilliamsoniana (Spence Bate, 1857) specimens collected in the Levantine Basin of the Mediterranean Sea displayed polymorphism in some characters. More than 100 specimens were examined and their intra-specific variation in the shape of the third epimeral plate analysed and quantified. The morphometric geometry methodology is used to assess the ‘cryptic’ variation in shape which may obscure identification. The results support the assignment of sunnivae and megalops to morphotypes of B. guilliamsoniana sensu d’Udekem d’Acoz & Vader (2005)

Monitoring Marine Invasive Species in Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)

The objective of this guide is to aid Mediterranean MPAs in developing an effective IAS programme. To facilitate this, a draft Marine Invasive Alien Species Strategy for the MedPAN Network was prepared a priori and discussed in several regional workshops with MPA managers and experts (MedPAN Draft IAS Strategy, 2012). The overall aim of the strategy is to establish a common framework for MedPAN members to take action on marine invasive species. The present guide takes forward some of the described actions, addressing the key goals and main recommendations of the strategy, with a view to the prevention and early detection of new IAS entering the MPA environment. Furthermore, it contains information on the introduction pathways and impacts of major marine species that have invaded the Mediterranean Sea, on how to monitor and identify them and on what can be done to prevent their establishment and spread in MPAs
