Improving performance measurement and benchmarking in the accommodation sector
Purpose – The aims of the paper are to evaluate the relevance of environmental factors (seasonality,
size and quality) on hotels’ performance and benchmarks; to measure the bias in efficiency resulting
from a failure to control for these sources of heterogeneity; and to propose some managerial policies to
handle for environmental heterogeneity.
Design/methodology/approach – The sample is constituted by 2,705 hotels operating in
Emilia-Romagna (Italy). The metafrontier approach is used to identify the different production
processes and measure technical efficiency scores.
Findings – Different production processes exist among accommodation firms due to environmental
features; not considering heterogeneity in technological sets produces high levels of bias in the
efficiency measurement, albeit the ranking of hotels tends to be fairly consistent; the star rating is the
primary source of efficiency bias followed by seasonality, while size has a minor impact.
Research limitations/implications – Future research could be directed to analyse the relevance of
environmental heterogeneity in other areas; study the dynamics; investigate agglomeration effects; and
use other methodological tools.
Practical implications – The analysis proposes new managerial interventions: targeted strategies
to different groups; creation of networks of enterprises, clustered mainly in respect to size for highly
rated enterprises and seasonality for low-rated enterprises; and incentives to annual hotels and raise in
the product quality.
Originality/value – This paper simultaneously considers several environmental factors affecting
heterogeneity in hotel production processes; investigates the effect of heterogeneity on either the
efficiency scores or the ranking of hotels; and focuses on micro, low-quality or seasonal hotels
Measuring underreporting in accommodation statistics: evidence from Italy
The aim of this letter is to provide a new measure of the underreporting of accommodation statistics in Italian domestic tourism. The analysis employs information from different official surveys. Following the Eurostat recommendations, we compare the Italian trips and holidays surveys and the Movements in accommodation establishments, the two major official sources on tourism in Italy and on the activities of persons travelling, respectively. The analysis shows that demand-side estimates exceed accommodation statistics by 16%, on average, over the period 2007-2009 and that the underreporting rate is variable over time. The results highlight the need to explicitly consider this measurement error when analysing the tourism business cycle, forecasting tourism flows and defining tourism policy
Importance bias in business hotel quality surveys: the role of travelers’ heterogeneity
Thanks to a wide survey, recording business travelers’ perceived overall hotel quality, importance and
performance of room and bathroom, external services and personnel, this work aims at investigating
whether socio-demographic, trip and business-related variables influence an eventual tendency of respondents
to over/understate the importance of hotels’ attributes. Moreover, we test the dependence
of the interviewees’ evaluations of the importance of each of the three mentioned aspects on both
the overall satisfaction and the perceived performance with the corresponding aspect, highlighted by
the extant literature. In addition, we empirically verify if the importance statements for each aspect
are affected by both the importance and the performance of the other hotel’s attributes. Results indicate
that the differences in importance statements between individuals with certain characteristics,
taking business trips with determinate features, can be ascribed to differences in their tendency to
state higher or lower importance values, than they actually conceive, that is explained by these characteristics
and features. Furthermore, findings concerning room and bathroom and external services
point out that the response bias is negatively correlated with the overall satisfaction and directly related
to the performance of both the personnel and the attribute itself. This evidence disconfirms the thesis
that the poor performance of an attribute makes it more important in the perception of the customer.
For all the aspects, the bias is positively influenced by the importance of the other attribute

Does designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site influence tourist evaluation of a local destination?
The purpose of this study is to explore whether the UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS) designation affects tourists’ evaluation of the local destination hosting the site, building on a large sample of about 0.8 million tourists who visited Italy over the period 1997-2015. We find that the inscription onto the UNESCO World Heritage List exerts surprisingly a negative effect on the overall evaluation of the destination and also on the evaluation of its artistic assets though the magnitude of the latter is lower. The effect is heterogeneous across visitors, depending on evaluation levels, as well as origin/destinations and demographics. Nonetheless, the presence of multiple WHSs in the same destination tends to increase evaluation suggesting that destination stakeholders with previous experience in dealing with WHS designations are better equipped to manage the complicated relationship between tourism and preservation. Managerial and policy-making implications are discussed
Studying Russian individual consumption in small areas of the Emilia Romagna Region
Policy makers ask for spatially detailed statistical information in the assessment of the tourism impact, often asking for ad-hoc surveys for gathering additional information. To design marketing strategies and to foster the development of tourism destinations, these information should be provided with respect to the characteristics generally recognized as main determinants of individuals’ behaviour spending: socio-economic, demographic, psychographic and behavioural variables. In this chapter, we adopt data gathered from the National Frontier Survey and made available by Banca d’Italia to deliver estimates of average individual expenditure by tourist nationality, adjusting for trip-related variables, in small areas of the Emilia Romagna Region, with particular focus on Russian tourists. A Bayesian approach is adopted in order to manage estimation based on small sample sizes by borrowing strength in space and time. The approach appears promising in small area estimation for producing the spatially detailed information sought by policy makers
Developing a composite indicator of resident well-being: the case of the Romagna area
There is a growing literature on the assessment of quality of life conditions
and well-being in geographically and/or politically divided areas.. The paper proposes a
new measure of well-being based on residents‟ satisfaction with specific life domains,
leisure activities and satisfaction with life as a whole. The well-being index is
constructed using a Weighted Sum Model, where the weights are calculated by DEA
Reverse engineering the last-minute on-line pricing practices: an application to hotels
We suggest a nonlinear time series methodology to model the (last-minute) price
adjustments that hotels active in the online market make to adapt their early-booking
rates in response to unpredictable fluctuations in demand. We use this approach to
reverse-engineer the pricing strategies of six hotels in Milan, Italy, each with different
features and services. The results reveal that the hotels’ ability to align lastminute
adjustments with early-booking decisions and account for stochastic demand
seasonality varies depending on factors such as size, star rating, and brand affiliation.
As a primary empirical finding, we show that the autocorrelations of the first four
moments of the last-minute price adjustment can be used to gain crucial insights
into the hoteliers’ pricing strategies. Scaling up this approach has the potential to
equip policymakers in smart destinations with a reliable and transparent tool for the
real-time monitoring of demand dynamics
Integrating narrow and wide framing disposition effect: A novel approach incorporating perceived risk and realized asset performance
This paper proposes an integrated framing approach to investigate the disposition effect by linking it to regret and prospect theory. We build upon the wide framing hypothesis and extend prior research by including metrics of perceived risk and the number of days stocks are at a gain. Using a sample of 24 million trading operations conducted by nearly 4,000 Italian investors from 2010 to 2018, we demonstrate that investment decisions are influenced not only by portfolio aggregate performance but also by asset trading history and perceived volatility. Our results align with several theoretical frameworks that could explain the disposition effect, such as mental accounting, prospect theory and regret aversion. Furthermore, by incorporating both narrow and wide framing factors, along with their interactions, our approach provides a more comprehensive understanding of the disposition effect
