The activity of volatile compounds from Lavandula angustifolia against Psoroptes cuniculi.

Previously we demonstrated the acaricidal properties of Lavandula angustifolia Miller essential oil and of linalool, one of its main components, against Psoroptes cuniculi detected following direct contact of the substances with the mites. In the present paper we report the acaricidal activity of volatile linalool and of the lavender essential oil without direct contact of the ectoparasites with these substances. Diethyl ether extracts of dead mites showed linalool was the only detectable substance using this method by gas chromatography, The study confirms the acaricidal properties of lavender essential oil and of linalool by inhalation, indicating an additional route for possible use of these substances both for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes

STRUCTURE/ACTIVITY RELATIONSHIP OF SOME NATURAL MONOTERPENES AS ACARICIDES AGAINST PSOROPTES CUNICULI

The pharmacological activity of many essential oils on a large number of human and animal pathogens, as used in folk medicine, has been confirmed world-wide by several laboratory investigations. Unfortunately, the biological properties of essential oils can be extremely inconsistent because of the variability of their chemical composition. The acaricidal activities of some natural terpenoids, which are the main constitutents of several essential oils, were evaluated in vitro against the mange mite (Psoroptes cuniculi) of the rabbit, by direct contact and by inhalation. Because the test components represent different chemical classes (hydrocarbons, alcohols, and phenols, with free and esterified or etherified functional groups), it was also possible to discern in a preliminary fashion a correlation between chemical structure and acaricidal activity. The results obtained suggest that molecules possessing free alcoholic or phenolic groups showed the most potent acaricidal activity

How social and structural characteristics influence the choices and therefore the life course of working mothers? This is the research question that this paper attempts to answer. In the theoretical part, starting from Hakim Preference Theory and referring to the relational theory, the author wants to underline which aspects contribute to build the identity of women who have both family and work responsibilities. The empirical part is based on the analysis of 50 in-depth interviews addressed to working mothers in relation to their identities in daily work-life balance. The results demonstrate that an essential element to understand mother identity and their choices about work and family is not only the personal reflexivity of women, but mostly the “wereflexivity”- developed together with their partner
