Artistic and genre differences of both manners of singing are defined; the limits of possibilities of Lithuanian church choirs in relation with the requirements are discussed. The article presents the arguments against the urging to unite the choir with the communal chanting since it would deny its essential existential meaning. In the article, communal chanting is treated as chanting in a group which is impossible without corresponding methodology in modern society. Difficulties of its organization in present Lithuania are as follows: popularity of choirs, hostility among people and different levels of musical literacy. Brundza; National rebirth; Religious song; Religious songs; Seinai; Theological collegeBased on the unpublished manuscript of Mykolas Brundza, the former choirmaster at Seinai Seminary, as well as already published historical material, the paper aims to discuss the activities of Seinai Priest Seminary choir which functioned at the end of the 19th c. – the beginning of the 20th c. and which has not been mentioned in Lithuanian music history so far. The paper states that Seinai Seminary was an important centre of national rebirth. A choir functioned in the seminary on the initiative of ordinands, which sang Lithuanian folk songs and chanted hymns. In 1903, the choir sang in Lithuanian for the first time in the chapel of Seinai Seminary, and at the beginning of the 20th c. four-part polyphonic singing was practiced. Based mainly on the testimonies of Brundza, the paper presents the formation of the choir, the selection of singers and the repertoire, schedules of rehearsals, mutual relations of Lithuanian and Polish choir singers as well as the organisation of concerts. The author discusses the repertoire of the choir and notes that this choir consisting of most musical ordinands sang the polyphonic liturgical Latin works of Vitt and Haller. The choir would sing in the Town Cathedral during the biggest festivals and celebrations. National awareness of young ordinands is said to have formed in this choir, and their musical and vocal skills were developed. Since the future Lithuanian clergy acquired a lot of musical experience at the seminary’s choir, former choir singers, when they graduated from the seminary, not only became zealous advocates of Lithuanianness and educators of people, but also choir organisers and cherishers of Lithuanian songs and hymns

Choruses and song festivals in Lithuania - the arousers of ethnic self-awareness: their development and problems (the second half of the 19th century - the beginning of the 21st century)
Lietuvių tautinio atgimimo ir lietuviškų chorų sąjūdžio užuomazgos XIX a. pab. – XX a. pr. glūdėjo europietiškosios ir valstietiškos kaimiškos kultūrų santalkoje. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Bažnyčia; Chorai; Dainos; Dainų šventės; Etninė savimonė; Giesmės; Repertuaras; Tautinio atgimimo sąjūdis; Choruses; Church; Ethnic self - awarness; Etnic self-awareness; Hymns; Lithuania; Movement of national revival; Repertoire; Song festivals; SongsThe beginning of Lithuanian national revival and Lithuanian choir movement at the end of the 19th–beginning of the 20th c. stemmed from the mixture of the European and urban peasant cultures. The preconditions of choral art and song festival vitality are the ethnic existence of the nation, its psychology and traditions of folk singing. The first Lithuanian choruses were church choruses and secular choruses wide spread after the cancellation of the Lithuanian press ban. During the Soviet occupation choruses and song festivals represented national consciousness and spiritual values in various forms of activities. The activities and the repertoire of choruses show how the artistic display of ethnic self-awareness increased from the state of resistance during the after-war years to a full-fledged national revival. Song festivals are the significant field of national identity and ethnic awareness. They concentrate and summarise the social and artistic activities of Lithuanian choruses. The article analyses the influence of Lithuanian choirs and song festivals on the fostering of ethnic self-awareness. Lithuanian choirs from the end of the 19th c. and song festivals from the first half of the 20th c. are one of the most influential means of development of national identity and ethnic self-awareness. In 2003 Baltic song festivals were included into the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The modern and contemporary model of the song festival, the wide scope of its genre structure open endless possibilities for social and cultural communication and enhancement of the social influence of these festivals. The aim of the article is to form a generalised concept of song festivals
Professional and social-legal problems of Lithuania's organists in the first half of the 20th century
Vargonininkų socialinės ir teisinės padėties klausimas XIX a. pabaigoje – XX a. pradžioje traktuojamas kaip daugialypė lietuvių tautinio atgimimo socialinė bei kultūrinė ir anuo metu vykusios bažnytinės muzikos reformos problematika. Vargonininkų darbo ir būties klausimus Lietuvoje mėgino spręsti Šv. Grigaliaus Didžiojo vargonininkų, vėliau Šv. Cecilijos draugijos. Straipsnyje aptariami vargonininkų reikalavimai, analizuojamos siūlytos priemonės padėčiai gerinti. Vargonininkų reikalai šiek tiek pagerėjo nepriklausomos Lietuvos Respublikos laikotarpiu, tačiau dėl įvairių objektyvių ir subjektyvių priežasčių vargonininko statuso teisiniu atžvilgiu XX a. pirmojoje pusėje suformuluoti nepavyko Reikšminiai žodžiai: Bažnyčia; Lietuvos bažnytinės muzikos istorija; Lietuvos kultūros istorija; Lietuvos tautinis atgimimas; Vargonai; Vargoninikas; Vargonininkų draugijos; Church; Cultural history of Lithuania; History of Lithuanian church music; Lithuania; Lithuanian national revival; Organist; Organs; Societies of organistsThe question of the social and legal status of organists at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th c. is discussed in the context of the multifaceted socialcultural problems of Lithuanian national awakening and the on-going reforms of church music. The Society of the Organists of St. Gregory the Great and later the Society of St. Cecilia tried to settle the situation of the organists in Lithuania. The article discusses the demands of the organists, analyzes their offered methods to improve the situation. The problematic situation of the organists was to some extent resolved during the time of the independent Republic of Lithuania, but for various objective and subjective reasons the legal aspects of the status of organists were not successfully resolved in the first half of the 20th centur
Chorinės muzikos leidyba Lietuvoje 1940-1989 metais
Šiame straipsnyje autorius tyrinėja chorinės muzikos leidybos 1940-1989 m. tendencijas. Išanalizavęs išleistos muzikos žanrines stilistines ypatybes, jis priėjo išvados, kad pirmaisiais pokario metais leidyba besąlygiškai tarnavo okupacinės valdžios ir jos ideologijos reikalams. Tačiau palaipsniui ji susikoncentravo į nacionalinės muzikos leidybą ir daug pasitarnavo bendrai nacionalinės muzikinės kultūros plėtotei. All created music was immediately published in huge amounts. The main anxiety of the publishing was composition of Soviet composers, this way the foreign compositions, especially of West Europe, were left behind. In the first postwar publications dominated ideological and occupational Russian music. From the year 1960 till 1965, that kind of music was less to find in the publications, because there was an income of original compositions from Russia to Lithuanian libraries. In the last few decades of the Soviet system every appearance of a new set of song music, concurred with stylistic change in music evolution. The chorus publications, which appeared in Soviet Union, became of special value for the whole chorus culture
Problems raised by exiles' choirs and resistance songs
Reikšminiai žodžiai: Pasipriešinimo dainos; Istorinė atmintis; Pajauta; Dainavimo kontekstas; Tradicijos aktualizavimas; Repertuaras.; Resistance songs; Historical memory; Sensation; The context of singing; Actualization of the tradition; Repertoire. The article analyses the problems of tradition of the Lithuanian resistance against Soviet occupation songs and of the contents and sensation of exiles' choirs active at present. The weather was nice, festive events and especially the Day of Songs attracted a lot of audience, and the festive mood prevailed. The joint choir seemed to be somewhat diminished, but the loss was compensated by all three national choirs involved in the celebration. The festival achieved very high artistic standards and attracted great attention of the media: scientists, journalists, observers, fans of the festival wrote about it, the Lithuanian radio interviewed people and then transferred the interviews across the Internet. The abundance of texts and difference of opinions reminded me of a hissing beehive showing the growing public attention to the Song Festival
