Diffusion models in forecasting. A comparison with the Box-Jenkins approach
No full textDiffusion models represent an interesting approach to the study of technical change and evolutionary processes. In the business area many models based on the diffusion approach have been developed particularly in forecasting, as in new product analysis. Some authors have also used these models extensively in technological forecasting applications. Despite the fact that at present diffusion models are a widely employed tool, their value compared to other forecasting techniques has not yet been well established. The aim of this paper is to carry out a comparative analysis on the descriptive and forecasting accuracy of the Box-Jenkins and diffusion models, on the basis of many different time series. The numerical procedures used in parameter calibration and the performance indexes employed in comparing the models' performance are explicitated. Some general conclusions regarding the conditions of diffusion models practical application are put forward

No full textThe paper first assesses the criteria for dividing the numerous and various photovoltaic (PV) applications into homogeneous categories. With respect to these, a detailed analysis of the market is thus carried out to identify the main market sectors and their respective dynamics. Four application areas have been singled out as market segments and, by separating them from disturbance factors such as government commissions, the relevant evolution has been determined for each one. All these provide a comprehensive description of the present PV commercial diffusion and yield useful indications of the next growth stage. According to the state of PV research and development, the results obtained show that, in the near term, radical changes in the market trend can be excluded, but nevertheless the present stable expansion will be roughly maintained

On this basis the determinants of the specific energy requirements, corresponding to an optimal level of insulation are identified.
The sensitivity of the energy needs to variations in the building structure or design, in the economic conditions, and in the climate characteristics, is also investigated
