What is the most profitable targeting strategy from mass marketing to personalization? Results from a simulation in tourism
Scholars know that setting the right target, from the aggregated market to personalization, raises a cost-benefit trade-off, but we found little research on this topic. Personalization is very popular, but it may be costly. Using broader market segments can be affordable but less accurate. We did a simulation analysis in the tourism industry based on a case-study. We compared the profits of four different targets, aggregated market, large segments, micro-segments, individuals, in different conditions by varying consumers' attitudes, price, and scale/scope economies. Our findings show that micro-segmentation is the most profitable strategy on average, but the comparison strongly depends on the business conditions
Organization and Technology in Knowledge Transfer
Knowledge transfer is recognized as a fundamental issue for organizations. This research aims at investigating the knowledge transfer process, and finding out the most efficient and effective strategies to support it. Particularly, the research is focused on studying support strategies based on the use of technology. The paper proposes a model that describes both knowledge acquisition and practice. The model components are the actors' cognitive systems, the processes of codification and interpretation, and the object transferred. The model predicts that a better understanding of knowledge transfer can be achieved by distinguishing organizational similarity from dissimilarity, training from fertilization, and autonomous from interactive practice. This is particularly helpful to discuss what the role and value of technology are in supporting knowledge transfer in organizations effectively
Fuzzy logic in vendor rating: a comparison between a fuzzy logic system and a neural network
In the industrial environment, more stable and cooperative supply relationships require the rating and the selection of suppliers. Usually, this important and complex decision is made by experts. Due to the uncertainty and the non-linearity of the behavior of the experts involved in this decision-making process, the fuzzy logic seems particularly suitable to model a decision support system. In this paper, a fuzzy logic system is proposed to support vendor rating. Since also neural networks are able to simulate non-linear behaviors, the fuzzy logic system is compared to a neural network in order to evaluate the different system performance

To be or not to be confident in medicine: that's the question! An explorative study on consumer information inferences toward food supplements consumption
Abstract
Purpose
This study investigated how consumers' confidence in medicine and health information seeking and usage could be related to purchase intentions and satisfaction.
Design/methodology/approach
A panel of 18 food supplements consumers were interviewed using soft laddering. Qualitative data were coded and used to develop a structured survey. Participants (N = 363) were recruited on a voluntary basis among the customers of an Italian company in this sector. Hypotheses were tested by linear regressions and generalized models.
Findings
Results showed that consumers' confidence in medicine interacted with health information seeking and usage influencing both purchase intention and satisfaction. Consumers with high confidence behave differently from those with low confidence.
Research limitations/implications
The authors used a sample based on one company's customer base.
Practical implications
Companies should segment their customers based on their level of confidence in medicine and adopt different marketing strategies for different segments.
Social implications
A broader knowledge of consumers' attitudes towards food supplements and medicines can improve the public policies aimed at increasing quality of life.
Originality/value
From a theoretical viewpoint, findings suggest to consider consumers' confidence in medicine along with other subjective and contextual variables in socio-cognitive models aimed at explaining food supplements' consumer behavior. From a marketing viewpoint, results suggest to consider confidence in medicine as a precious variable in segmentation strategies. While some communication strategies are valid for all customers (i.e. using experts as advisors, using scientific contents in ads), others (i.e. relying on the advice of trustworthy people, explaining the consequences of consumption) were proved to have different impact on consumers depending on their degree of confidence in medicine
