Marco Tullio Cicerone, De officiis. Quel che è giusto fare

    No full text

Superdescendants of the D1D5 CFT and their dual 3-charge geometries

We describe how to obtain the gravity duals of semiclassical states in the D1-D5 CFT that are superdescendants of a class of RR ground states. On the gravity side, the configurations we construct are regular and asymptotically reproduce the 3-charge D1-D5-P black hole compactified on S (1) x T (4). The geometries depend trivially on the T (4) directions but non-trivially on the remaining 6D space. In the decoupling limit, they reduce to asymptotically AdS(3) x S (3) x T (4) spaces that are dual to CFT states obtained by acting with (exponentials of) the operators of the superconformal algebra. As explicit examples, we generalise the solution first constructed in arXiv:1306.1745 and discuss another class of states that have a more complicated dual geometry. By using the free orbifold description of the CFT we calculate the average values for momentum and the angular momenta of these configurations. Finally we compare the CFT results with those obtained in the bulk from the asymptotically M (1,4) x S (1) x T (4) region

Strabo and the Caucasian Albanians: some Preliminary Remarks

There is no real comprehensive commentary to Strabo’s account on Caucasian Albania (Strabo, XI, 4, 502-503C). This paper will consider the most important pieces of information provided by the Geography, focusing on the sources, the strategic continuum formed by the Albanians and the Iberians, and the textual problem in Strabo, XI, 4, 6, 503C, concerning the Albanian kings.

"Barbaric Harmony ? The Drums of the Parthians at the Battle of Carrhae". In the Life of Crassus, Plutarch evokes the role of Parthian drums in the battle of Carrhae (Crassus, XXIII, XXIV-8, 1 ; XXVI, 4). The rhythm of these instruments, called πτρα or τύμπανα and also mentioned by Justin, XLI, 2, 8, accompanies the paroxystic fury of the warriors, tetanizing and mesmerizing the enemy. Plutarch seems here to deviate from the classical tradition, which assigns to the barbaric drumming a «dissonant» connotation : on the contrary, in this particular context, they seem to recall a kind of «oriental model of war», where the barbarian «harmony» of the Parthians overwhelm the Romans at bay. Traina Giusto.
