Hybridity enabled: a research synthesis of the enabling conditions for hybrid professionalism in healthcare

    No full text
Hybrid professionals in healthcare organizations play a critical role, the characteristics, processes and implications of which have been thoroughly studied by scholars in the field. However, not as much attention has been paid to the conditions under which such roles might be taken by professionals entering the ground of management. This gap results into a lack of conceptual clarity and eventually ends being an obstacle in framing and ameliorating the tools needed to act such a role in its different phases. This is a research area worthy of a finer-grained understanding: the ability of organizations to effectively support role hybridization, in fact, is a requisite for professionals-managers' willingness to stay in the role and cope with the complexity that such a two-fold position entails, no matter what. Based on the results of a scoping literature review, this paper presents the enabling conditions for hybrid professionalism in healthcare, and proposes a classification of them into categories corresponding to different facets of hybrid role-taking: opportunities for interaction with management, tools supporting sense-making, and provision of delegation and autonomy. For each of these categories, organizational and management tools discussed in the literature are presented. The results of the study provide a road-map of the enabling conditions for hybrid professionalism that aims to be of practical convenience for managers and policy-makers in health care. Eventually, suggestions for organizational design and personnel management, as well as directions for further research, are highlighted

    No full text

Performance shall not live by results alone: organizational subcultures and perceived performance in public administration

    No full text
Based on a structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis with 300 employees of a local public administration, the authors investigated whether and how different organizational subcultures relate to perceived levels of performance. Perceived performance was found to be associated with innovation and group subcultures, whereas no evidence of a significant relationship with results and rules subcultures was found. Following the assumptions of person-organization (P-O) fit theory, the mediational effect of employee engagement in such relationships was also tested

Telework and job satisfaction in knowledge-intensive public organizations: a quali-quantitative analysis from an environmental protection agency in Italy

    No full text
Purpose The study aims to examine the relationship between telework conditions and employees' job satisfaction (JS) within knowledge-intensive public organizations (KIPOs). Additionally, it aims to unfold the mediating role played by both organizational and job characteristics, namely supervisory support (SS) and job autonomy (JA). Design/methodology/approach The analysis adopts a simultaneous qualitative-quantitative design, starting with a preliminary inductive analysis of qualitative data, followed by a deductive quantitative analysis using structural equation modeling (SEM). The data were retrieved from a survey completed by some 700 employees of a regional environmental protection agency in Italy. Findings Findings show that the positive association between conditions for telework (CT) and JS is partially mediated by both SS and JA. Moreover, the results of the study suggest a sequential nature of such mediational patterns. Originality/value This research provides an empirical contribution to a relatively under-investigated area: the role of job characteristics in explaining the nexus between telework and JS. Furthermore, the study takes place within the context of a KIPO, adding particular significance to the emerging insights due to the distinct nature of the work conducted in such settings

    No full text

    No full text
Mergers are usually supported by the adoption of management tools to control and coordinate the new activities and resources acquired. This article aims at analysing the characteristics of these tools, and more generally of Management Control Systems (MCS), in supporting these processes and influencing their end-results in the public sector. The paper is based on the Tuscany Region’s case study developed through interviews to the key-informant of the process. Three main results are highlighted by the research: a) the multi-faceted nature of managerial control which includes different kinds of tools; b) the role of MCS in supporting the alignment of individual behaviours within the organization; c) the role of MCS with respect to the relationship between management and politics
