The little hybrid crayfish have grown - will they be reproductive?
In October 2009 we had started a breeding experiment between the two presumed species of Austropotamobius pallipes complex under controlled conditions, in order to investigate the possible existence of reproductive barriers. In June 2010 offsprings did hatch, either from females having intraspecific or interspecific (only italicus females) mating. The mating success of A. pallipes complex showed no reproductive barrier and the isolation mentioned in previous researches does not work at pre-zygotic level. As regards post-zygotic isolation, italicus hybrid zygotes were formed and successfully developed in three months post-hatching period (Ghia et al., 2011). Three years have passed and nowadays 12 of those hybrid crayfish are still alive. We describe their story through regular checks; we discuss their growth trend according to water temperature data recorded over the three-years period; male maturity and the occurrence of the glair glands in females; and their morphometric features compared to the origin natural populations

You’re kidding, right? The English present progressive as a stance marker in film dialogue
Telecinematic discourse is a highly involved and emotionally loaded register (Quaglio 2009; Forchini 2012) in which stance and emotionality are conveyed via a variety of linguistic structures, including intensifiers (Tagliamonte, Roberts 2005; Baños 2013), expletives (Azzaro 2018; Bednarek 2019), vocatives (Formentelli 2014; Zago 2015) and emotionally charged lexical bundles (Freddi 2011; Bednarek 2012). The current study focuses on the present progressive in English film dialogue as an additional stance marker, especially when used in non-aspectual functions. Following Leech et al. (2009)’s model, different uses of the present progressive are investigated in a corpus of filmic speech, the Pavia Corpus of Film Dialogue. After categorizing all the occurrences of present progressives in the corpus by their specific function (aspectual, futurate, stative, attitudinal), items are further classified based on their affiliative or disaffiliative stance. The focus is then narrowed down onto attitudinal, particularly interpretive, present progressives. The most common verbs used in interpretive patterns are singled out and analyzed in greater detail, by looking at the clusters or n-grams they appear in and drawing comparisons with spontaneous spoken language data. Findings show that interpretive present progressives are used extensively in film dialogue and often associate with a stance-marking, primarily disaffiliative function. The trend is especially evident in a set of verbs that appear in recurring patterns and n-grams throughout the corpus and act as privileged interpretive predicates. Data also suggest that multiple features cluster together to convey interpersonal meaning and display disalignment and conflict on screen
Original and dubbed telecinematic input and Italian L2 acquisition in Malta
Research on Italian L2 acquisition in Malta is extensive and has demonstrated the benefits of language learning through audiovisual media. For this study we collected data regarding exposure to telecinematic input from advanced learners of Italian in Malta. Results reveal that this input plays a relevant role in the acquisition of Italian and that it also motivated the subjects to learn the language and foster positive attitudes towards it. During the course of the study these advanced learners also watched five films in Italian over a period of four months. Through an analysis of results based on a quasi-experimental comparison group design, considerations are put forward regarding the efficacy of original and dubbed language forms on tasks involving vocabulary retention and pragmatically connoted expressions
Changes in morphological and physiological traits during leaf expansion of Arbutus unedo
Chlorophyll a+b content (Chl a+b), stomatal conductance (gs) and net photosynthesis (PN) in Arbutus unedo increased with leaf age up to full leaf expansion (0.44±0.001 mg g−1, 0.2±0.01 mol H2O m−2 s−1, 10.5±0.2 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 respectively), and the average daily leaf inclination decreased from 64.0±2.0° (13 days after bud break) to 50.4±5.2° at full leaf expansion. The correlation analysis of the data sets collected during leaf development confirmed the dependence among structural and functional traits in A. unedo: PN was directly correlated with gs, leaf dry mass (DM), leaf area (LA), and Chl a+b. At full expansion, leaves were characterised by a well-developed palisade parenchyma (two layers), 1.06 ratio palisade/spongy parenchyma, 395±10 μm leaf lamina thickness (L), 67.8±0.2 cm2 g−1 specific leaf area (SLA), 0.4±0.01 μm leaf tissue density (LTD), and a diurnal trend of leaf inclination (°) with a maximum at midday (up to 63.9±0.3°) determining 48% reduction of incident irradiance. By these specific leaf traits A. unedo might be considered as an evergreen scherophyllous species at low degree of sclerophylly
History-based assessment of the dome of the Basilica of S. Maria of Carignano in Genova
ABSTRACT. The paper discusses the assessment of the dome of the Basilica of S. Maria of Carignano in Genoa, designed by Galeazzo Alessi in the XVIth century. The access to the private archive of the Sauli family allowed a detailed history of the Basilica to be reconstructed clarifying several crucial aspects of the structure: the actual depth of the foundation system, the materials of the load bearing structure, mainly of the dome and of the drum, the actual building sequence. The restoration works (steel hoop) carried out in the past decades, discovered by means of the historical research, are related to the severe crack pattern of the dome, that nowadays puts
forward the need for a detailed insight into its mechanical response. It is showed that historical information is the key for understanding several issues that a “technological” engineering approach would leave unsolved. Besides, historical data are used to setup a non linear incremental FEM procedure, referred to a slice (1/16th) of the structure due to symmetry conditions, that is able, in spite of its reduced computational demand, to show that the dome
response is strictly related also to the drum features, thus explaining cracking and the role of hooping stresses (and ties) in the global equilibrium. Some issues for the retrofitting of dome-like structures are discussed
Structural models for the assessment of the masonry dome of the basilica of S. Maria of Carignano in Genoa
In this paper the safety of the dome of the Basilica of S. Maria of Carignano in Genoa, by Galeazzo Alessi, built in the XVIth century, is analysed. Two different approaches are followed in order to evaluate the safety of the structure and the related results are compared in order to evaluate their reliability. The first one is based on the classical equilibrium limit conditions of the double masonry dome and of the dome-drum system, assuming a rigid no tensile-resistant material and considering the actual shape of the structure, so as to evaluate the safety related to local and global collapse mechanisms taking into account the different behaviour of several structural elements (lantern, shells of the dome, drum, colonnade). The second approach is a finite element one related to one eighth of the dome-drum system in which masonry is assumed with low tensile and limited compressive strength. Comparisons between the obtained results are carried out so as to propose a general approach based on numerical tools calibrated by standard analyses
Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
