In palaces and castles of Sicilian aristocracy, newly built or renewed during the 14th century, the presence of palatine chapels is a constant. Included among the spaces of the main building itself, or built in autonomous volumes but adjacent to the first, they contribute to define its rank, in an ambiguous balance between public and private sphere. In fact, although intended primarily for private use – of which, however, mode and frequency aren’t still precisely known – at the same time they are spaces defined with greater care and with formal choices that seem to pursue specific self-representation strategies, moving between exogenous models and
local traditions. This contribution aims to analyze a selected series of examples, which includes among others the chapels of the two Chiaromonte palaces in Palermo and Favara, with a focus on formal and language solutions as well as on technical and constructive aspects. Finally, the typological theme can offer the basis of a broader reasoning, which can contribute to a new critical reflection on a season of Sicilian architecture weighed down for a long time by the historiographical prejudice, triggered after the splendors of the Norman-Swabian age
In the processes of embellishment or reconstruction of the Benedictine churches in southern Italy and in Sicily, during the sixteenth
century, great care was put in equipping them with magnificent wooden choirs. This contribution retraces an artistic
journey that from the abbey of San Martino delle Scale, near Palermo, passing through the complex of SS. Severino and Sossio
in Naples, goes back to the abbey of Montecassino. In fact, the latter is the starting point of the sequence of the three choirs examined,
with a specific focus on the architectural themes present in them and in particular the series of windows carved into the
backs of the upper stalls. The vicissitudes of the three choirs and the repertoires of windows/aedicules offer the input for some
reflections on the relationship between cabinetmakers and architects in the second half of the sixteenth century, which was also
influenced by the progressive growth of engraving production
Founded in 15th century, Palermo’s Town-hall was repeatedly reformed in the following centuries. This contribution, based on an unplished archival document kept at the Municipal Historical Archive in Palermo, focuses on the interventions carried out in the building after 1823 earthquake. This was the occasion for a significant renovation of the interior spaces of the building, in particular, the sequence vestibule, atrium, staircase. Moreover, the document offers interesting information on the tecnichs and materials in use at the beginning of 19th century in Palermo’s building sites

Territorialist approach and bio-regionalist vision are already reflected in the well-known and successful definition of architecture, formulated by William Morris at the end of the nineteenth century, as “the moulding and altering to human needs of the very face of the earth itself, except in the outermost desert”. From this perspective, dealing with the history of architecture, the city and the territory therefore means taking an interest not only in places - in the physical and geographical meaning of the term - and in buildings, but above all in the processes and interactions that, daily or in the long lasting, generate the main transformations. This contribution aims to analyze the tools available to the historian for an investigation of the territory, concived not as a simple acquisition of data and knowledge growth, but as an indispensable preliminary
critical moment for any reflection of a design nature. The overall framework of these tools and of their usefulness in the study of a territory, as a bio-region, is accompanied by examples linked to concrete case studies, relating to the Sicilian regional context, which give an effective demonstration
The belltower of the cathedral or that of the mother church in smaller cities, in Sicily as well as in
many other contexts of western civilization, was an important point of reference for entire urban
communities. Through the study of a selected casuistry and the analysis of the available sources, this
contribution focuses on the dynamics that guided the interventions on the belltowers, considered as
urban landmarks, after catastrophic events in early modern Sicily
