Bartolomeo Panizza's contribution in the field of neurological studies
Bartolomeo Panizza, a pupil of Antonio Scarpa and professor of anatomy at the University of Pavia between 1815 and 1864, was the author of important contributions in the field of neurological studies and a true pioneer in research on the cerebral localization of psychic functions with the discovery of the cortical visual area. The sessile oak's decline phenomena has been analyzed in three protected areas of the N-E Piedmont region (N-W Italy), where this species is an important component of the Po plane forest structures. The utilized parameters are: crown clearness, leaf depigmentation, and presence of epicormic branches. We found mainly two different situations: one in better conditions where the species is at its ecological optimum, the second, where trees developped on fallows land, shows an elevate rate of declining trees
Antonio Scarpa's legacy in neurological sciences
Antonio Scarpa, one of the greatest Italian anatomists between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, dedicated to the neuroanatomical studies some important works accompanied by beautiful cal-cographic tables. His legacy still survives in traditional terminology, while his personality is remembered in an almost legendary portrait not without light and shade, handed down by generations of students of the University of Pavia

The origins of the fight against rabies: A journey between the history of neuroscience and university museum collections
Although rabies, or hydrophobia, is one of the so-called forgotten tropical diseases, it still kills thousands of people each year, especially children living in rural areas of Asia and Africa. This terrible disease was once a much-feared threat throughout Europe, whose terrifying symptoms were described in a vast body of literature that was based on both science and popular beliefs. One notable individual whose name is linked to the fight against this disease is Adelchi Negri, a brilliant but unfortunate pupil of Camillo Golgi. At the beginning of the 20th century, Negri observed peculiar formations in the brains of infected animals: known as Negri’s bodies, these formations became an important diagnostic tool used in anti-rabies institutes all over the world
