Durability of High Performance Lightweight Concrete

    No full text
A comprehensive experimental program was designed in order to investigate the durability properties of high-performance lightweight concrete. The concrete mixture was prepared in order to obtain an average compressive cylinder strength of about 70MPa at 28 days of age. Testing was carried out on a large number of lightweight concrete specimens. The following properties were investigated: compressive strength, creep, drying and autogenous shrinkage, water absorption, freezing-thawing resistance, air-void parameters, corrosion, carbonation, chloride-ion penetration, sulphate-ion penetration. The test results showed that high-performance lightweight concrete has considerable potential for the construction industry

Long-term behaviour of typical precast, prestressed double T concrete beams made of SCC and ordinary concrete was compared. Increase in deflection under load was registered in both elements for a year. Creep and shrinkage were monitored on laboratory concrete specimens as well. Data shown that concrete elements made of SCC rather than ordinary concrete perform substantially the same. Predictions of the long-term behaviour of the concrete structures was made according to different international Codes (Eurocode 2, ACI and JSCE Guidelines for Concrete) and the analytical results compared to the experimental ones

The S. Maria di Collemaggio Basilica: From Vulnerability Assessment to First Results of SHM

    No full text
In this paper, the history of the basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio for the last 10 years is outlined: from the damage occurred during the 2009 earthquake in L'Aquila, to the rehabilitation works and the main findings of the structural health monitoring (SHM) program carried out in 2018-2019. The restoration aimed at increasing the overall structural response by reducing the local collapse mechanisms (facade, apse, nave walls, etc.) observed after the seismic event. The vulnerability analysis, assessing the seismic capacity of the masonry structure before and after the restoration, throws light on the critical kinematic mechanisms, which are currently observed by a permanent monitoring system installed in 2017. First results concerning the dynamic identification of the basilica under both operational conditions and seismic events are developed and discussed. Furthermore, the maximum accelerations engaging each masonry macroelement during the last low-intensity earthquakes are discussed
