THE I.C.E. WORKSHOPS EXPERIENCE. DESIGN ORIENTED SCENARIOS FOR TERRITORY DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION IN MERCHANDISING DESIGN.
Today we notice a pressing question about the transformation process for the production of cultural
heritage and goods, the change of the shape purposes and the creation of new cultural scenarios, dictated
by the new contemporary demands and relationships. From an issue to be protected, the local culture is
taking on the role of a tool for the revitalization of an area and for an "high knowledge rate" innovation of
the project and the production. Design, with its practical value for the project, provides a solid and
methodological reference, vector of innovation for territorial development, assuming the director role of the
process, leveraging its analytical capabilities around the strategic needs and the application potential.
This paper describes a design oriented enhancement action of the territory, the I.C.E. project ("Innovation,
Culture and Creativity for a New Economy"), added in the EU cross‐border Territorial Cooperation
Programme Greece‐Italy 2007‐2013.
The Creative Workshops for product design and merchandising for the strategic competitive enhancement
for Apulia brand identity (Italy South Eastern Region), carried out during the whole 2015, have focused on
collaboration between the great local craftsmanship skills and strategic knowledge of design discipline

Creative Industries: Cultural and Territorial Development Model? Pilots, Demos and Experiment Case
Design approach, creative catalyst for entrepreneurship, is a disciplinary
territory that spans inspiration all along from the worlds of art and culture.
In particular, within the design industry, there are many cases where we have
the possibility to show convergences between culture and creativity and how
the world of design is a founding element of contemporary culture, whose
birth dates back to the scientific definition of Cultural Studies, social studies
that was born in Britain in the Sixties as an extension of traditional culture
towards mass culture, that revolutionized the way people think about the
relationship between individual and messages.
In fact, culture usually springs out from conflict and overlapping groups, each
of which is defined by his particular lifestyle, is included in its institutions
and social relations, in its beliefs and customs and its use of objects in the
material life (Fiorani, 2007).
Members of a subculture use to differentiate themselves from the rest of
society with common objects, music, or a certain type of clothing or hairstyle.
Therefore, objects produce style, consistent set of expressive elements.
An element of innovation that helps to promote the beneficial contribution
of creativity for culture can come from design, where the theoretical and
practical dialogue blends the ability to work closely with the major labels.
The opportunity to act with such a broad phenomenon as design, from the
perspective of both practical (design professionals) and theoretical (academic
approach), social and stylistic, nudges the operational tools to amplify the
potential of a designer, now known as an interpreter, and not anymore a
proponent of contemporary culture
