    The Early Bronze Age III and IVA1 at Tell Mardikh/Ebla and Its Region : Stratigraphic and Ceramic Sequences

    The site of Tell Mardikh, ancient Ebla, in north inner Syria, had three periods of flourishing: in Early Bronze IVA, the age of the State Archives, Early Bronze IVB and Middle Bronze I–II, between ca. 2400 and 1600 BC. The volume by Agnese Vacca explores the phases of formation of this great urban culture between ca. 2750/2700 and 2450 BC (EB III–IVA1) by means of an accurate and in-depth analysis of stratigraphy, architecture, ceramic materials and small finds. The analysis was carried out in part on the field, but it is also the brilliant result of a painstaking work of study of excavation records and files from the archives of the Ebla Excavation, which allowed the author to collect consistent evidence from individual buildings – like Building G2 and Building G5 – and to relate it with scattered evidence from other sectors of the town, leading to the reconstruction of a coherent picture of pre-Palace G phases. As concerns specifically the ceramic repertory, Vacca, starting with the evidence from Ebla, enlarges her analysis, singling out a specific pottery horizon of the Ebla region, whose relations with other contemporary assemblages in the Northern Levant are presented in detail. The resulting picture from Ebla and its region has been related with the contemporary evidence from the Northern Levant and Upper Mesopotamia and has been framed in the general background of the process of state formation in this very important region of the ancient Near East

Starting from FRW spaces we specialize to a de Sitter space–time and derive its inflationary power spectrum which we find to be almost flat.     An analytical short- and long-term memory model of presynaptic plasticity

    A mathematical model, called the Learning Gate Model (LGM), that describes phenomena responsible for biological synaptic plasticity, is presented. The functionality of the model are mainly based on the work of Kandel and colleagues on the most elementary forms of learning observed in the Aplysia Californica marine mollusc. In particular, emphasis is placed on the double temporal dynamics of synaptic plasticity and the temporal specificity of classical conditioning. By properly modeling the effect of the binding of Ca++ ions to the serotonin-sensitive adenylate cyclase enzyme, it is shown how a positively accelerated learning curve can be obtained for sensitization and classical conditioning. Phenomena of spontaneous recovery and second-order conditioning are reproduced through simulations. Mathematical analyses of the temporal trace of conditioned stimulus and of the Short-Term Memory steady state are also given. © 1992 Springer-Verlag

    Quantum Dot Cellular Automata Check Node Implementation for LDPC Decoders

    The quantum dot Cellular Automata (QCA) is an emerging nanotechnology that has gained significant research interest in recent years. Extremely small feature sizes, ultralow power consumption, and high clock frequency make QCA a potentially attractive solution for implementing computing architectures at the nanoscale. To be considered as a suitable CMOS substitute, the QCA technology must be able to implement complex real-time applications with affordable complexity. Low density parity check (LDPC) decoding is one of such applications. The core of LDPC decoding lies in the check node (CN) processing element which executes actual decoding algorithm and contributes toward overall performance and complexity of the LDPC decoder. This study presents a novel QCA architecture for partial parallel, layered LDPC check node. The CN executes Normalized Min Sum decoding algorithm and is flexible to support CN degree dc up to 20. The CN is constructed using a VHDL behavioral model of QCA elementary circuits which provides a hierarchical bottom up approach to evaluate the logical behavior, area, and power dissipation of the whole design.     Second Order Gauge-Invariant Perturbations during Inflation

    The evolution of gauge invariant second-order scalar perturbations in a general single field inflationary scenario are presented. Different second order gauge invariant expressions for the curvature are considered. We evaluate perturbatively one of these second order curvature fluctuations and a second order gauge invariant scalar field fluctuation during the slow-roll stage of a massive chaotic inflationary scenario, taking into account the deviation from a pure de Sitter evolution and considering only the contribution of super-Hubble perturbations in mode-mode coupling. The spectra resulting from their contribution to the second order quantum correlation function are nearly scale-invariant, with additional logarithmic corrections to the first order spectrum. For all scales of interest the amplitude of these spectra depend on the total number of e-folds. We find, on comparing first and second order perturbation results, an upper limit to the total number of e-folds beyond which the two orders are comparable

    The C-odd amplitude for the elastic pp and ppˉp\bar{p} scattering due to the exchange of the QCD odderon proposed by J. Bartels, L.N. Lipatov and G.P. Vacca is calculated with the Fukugita–Kwiecinski proton impact factor. The found amplitude is very small and cannot be felt in the differential cross-sections at 2.76 and 1.96 TeV respectively

    The conditions for the cancellation of one loop contributions to vacuum energy (both U.V. divergent and finite) coming from the Standard Model (SM) fields are examined. It is proven that this is not possible unless one introduces besides several bosons, at least one massive fermion having mass within specific ranges. On examining one of the simplest SM extensions satisfying the constraints one finds that the mass range of the lightest massive boson is compatible with the present Higgs mass bounds.
