Magneto-optic ellipsometry characterization of Co and SmCo thin films
Magneto-optic ellipsometry in the longitudinal Kerr configuration was performed to determine the complex permittivity tensor of the Co and SmCo thin films within the spectral range from 400nm to 1000nm. The Co film was a middle layer in a Au/Co/Au trilayer structure. Magneto-optical response was analyzed in terms of Mueller matrix elements. Reduced magneto-optical response of the Co layer is explained by influence of the gold top layer of the trilayer structure. Full Text: PDF ReferencesM. The role of collective motion in examples of coarsening and self-assembly
The simplest prescription for building a patterned structure from its constituents is to add particles, one at a time, to an appropriate template. However, self-organizing molecular and colloidal systems in nature can evolve in much more hierarchical ways. Specifically, constituents (or clusters of constituents) may aggregate to form clusters (or clusters of clusters) that serve as building blocks for later stages of assembly. Here we evaluate the character and consequences of such collective motion in a set of prototypical assembly processes. We do so using computer simulations in which a system's capacity for hierarchical dynamics can be controlled systematically. By explicitly allowing or suppressing collective motion, we quantify its effects. We find that coarsening within a two dimensional attractive lattice gas (and an analogous off-lattice model in three dimensions) is naturally dominated by collective motion over a broad range of temperatures and densities. Under such circumstances, cluster mobility inhibits the development of uniform coexisting phases, especially when macroscopic segregation is strongly favored by thermodynamics. By contrast, the assembly of model viral capsids is not frustrated but is instead facilitated by collective moves, which promote the orderly binding of intermediates consisting of several monomers

LC-polymer composites for the realization of passive and active opto-electronics components
Soft materials exhibit very attracting optical/mechanical/chemical/thermal properties and flexible processing techniques. Combined with holographic fabrication techniques, they can be patterned quite easily into many unique structures. In particular, photonic crystals, and photonic quasicrystals can be fabricated this way, with little technological effort. We present here few example, based on composite materials obtained from initial mixtures of polymeric and liquid crystalline materials, of passive opto-electronic components. These components are made in the form of holographic gratings and have attracting features that will be discussed. Finally, we propose a class of active components based on similar holographic design
Some topological groups with and some without suitable sets
AbstractIf a discrete subset S of a topological group G with identity 1 generates a dense subgroup of G and S∪{1} is closed in G, then S is called a suitable set for G. We construct in ZFC a Lindelöf topological group L such that t(L)·ψ(L)≤ℵ0 and L does not have a suitable set. We also give a ZFC example of a countably compact topological group H with no suitable set; in addition, the closure of every countable subset of H is compact. It is proved that a non-pseudocompact topological group with a dense strictly σ-discrete subset has a closed suitable set. This implies, in particular, that a free (Abelian) topological group on a metrizable space has a closed suitable set
