No full textTo achieve a sufficient dynamic range for single channel B1+ mapping required for calibration of multi-channel transmit arrays two distinct solutions have been suggestion recently: (1) Bloch-Siegert effect based B1+ mapping and (2) B1+ mapping using linear combinations of transmit channels. In this work, both approaches are combined and interferometric Bloch-Siegert B1+ mapping is introduced. This approach is cross-validated against two recently introduced interferometric B1+ mapping methods based on actual flip angle imaging (AFI) and a multi flip-angle pre-pulse method as well as against single-channel AFI based B1+ mapping

Revisiting the Siegert relation for the partially coherent regime of nanolasers
No full textThe Siegert relation connects the first- and second-order coherence
properties of light. While strictly valid only in the thermal regime and in the
absence of correlations, this relation is routinely extended to the partially
coherent regime in the study of high- nanolasers, where it aids in the
identification of the lasing threshold. We re-evaluate the use of a generalized
Siegert relation in different device regimes. A full two-time quantum-optical
theory is derived as a reference for obtaining first- and second-order
correlation functions and in the steady state.
We find that even in the partially coherent regime the generalized Siegert
relation is well suited as an approximation to as long as
emitter correlation are negligible, but does not apply well in the quantum
regime of few-emitter nanolasers, or to devices featuring sub- and superradiant
emission
A revised inventory of Antarctic subglacial lakes
No full textThe locations and details of 145 Antarctic subglacial lakes are presented. The inventory is based on a former catalogue of lake-type features, which has been subsequently reanalysed, and on the results from three additional datasets. The first is from Italian radio-echo sounding (RES) of the Dome C region of East Antarctica, from which 14 new lakes are identified. These data also show that, in a number of occasions, multiple lake-type reflectors thought previously to be individual lakes are in fact reflections from the same relatively large lake. This reduces the former total of lake-type reflectors by six, but also adds a significant level of information to these particular lakes. The second dataset is from a Russian survey of the Dome A and Dome F regions of East Antarctica, which provides evidence of 18 new lakes and extends the coverage of the inventory considerably. The third dataset comprises three airborne RES surveys undertaken by the US in East Antarctica over the last five years, from which forty three new lakes have been identified. Reference to information on Lake Vostok, from Italian and US surveys taken in the last few years, is now included
The effect of volatile fatty acid additions on the anaerobic digestion of cellulose and glucose in batch reactors
No full textBatch anaerobic reactor experiments were set up in which the degradation of the primary substrates cellulose and glucose was assayed when dosed with a concentration range from 1 to 20 g l?1 of a synthetic mixture of volatile fatty acids (VFA). Biogas production from the VFA mix and from reactors without VFA additions was used as a baseline control against which the results were compared and interpreted. The 1-l mesophilic (35 °C) reactors were seeded with an actively digesting sludge of sewage origin and monitored for biogas production, gas composition, volatile fatty acid concentration, glucose content and the cellulolytic enzymes carboxymethylcellulase and avicelase. Cellulose reduction was measured from initial and final samples of the reaction mix in each case. VFA caused inhibition of the cellulolytic activity at concentrations ?2 g l?1, and therefore of the rate of cellulose hydrolysis. The fermentation of glucose was slightly inhibited at VFA concentrations above 4 g l?1. The inhibitory effect on the production of biogas and also on the methane to carbon dioxide ratio was evident above 6 g l?1 VFA in the initial mixture when used as the sole substrate. In combination with paper as primary substrate, biogas production due to the paper was more than halved above 1 g l?1 initial VFA, indicating inhibition of the hydrolysis process. Where glucose was the primary substrate biogas production was more than halved above 8 g l?1 which indicated that the fermentation was less sensitive to inhibition caused by VFA
