Jessica Achberger, Africana librarian at Michigan State University Libraries interviews Justice Albert "Albie" Sachs, former judge from the Constitutional Court of South Africa
Justice Albert "Albie" Sachs, former judge from the Constitutional Court of South Africa, is interviewed by Jessica Achberger, Africana librarian at Michigan State University Libraries, about the Leonard Freed South African Elections photography collection in Michigan State University Libraries' Special Collections. Justice Sachs reflects on the importance of the 1994 elections, the role of the ANC media, and shares some of his personal experiences from before the end of apartheid in South Africa. He describes ANC's process coming up with its slogan 'A better life for all' and how its leadership wanted something associated dignity, humanity, and a peaceful transition rather than breakdown or destruction. He discusses the living conditions portrayed in the photographs, how the makeshift stalls, littered streets and shanties that a quarter of the population lived in have been replaced by brick and mortar homes, running water, sewage, and new challenges due to long commutes and lack of community. Justice Sachs also addresses the boycott of Outspan Oranges, his courts decision that Railway Transfer Authority had legal duty to protect its passengers, a massacre that occurred in front of ANC offices, and how today's younger generation has no idea how heavy and pervasive 'white over-lordship' was during apartheid. The photos inspire him to recall his expectations leading up to the election, his shared fondness with Nelson Mandela for Madiba shirts, and Mandela's response to the constitutional amendment proposal that would have allowed for ethnic homelands in South Africa

„Ausatmungen“. Das Schofar und die Klänge der kommenden Zeit in der Lyrik von Nelly Sachs
This article deals with some intermedial aspects of Nelly Sachs' poetical work. The focus is on Nelly Sachs' literary confrontation with music; in particular the article will examine the role played by instruments, in particular the shofar, in the poetry of German-Jewish author. In doing so, a new scientific territory will be broached, since the significance of this old instrument - central to the Jewish religious rites to Sachs' oevre hase been regularly overlooked. The aim of the article is to shaw that the Shofar in Nelly Sachs' poems points to a dematerialization, to the dissolution of boundaries and, above all, to the time to come, to the hereafter in its metaphysical meaning of an after death time. Methodologically, a philological-hermeneutic as well as an intertextual approach is used. In addition, Nelly Sachs' poetry is analyzed under an interdisciplinary lens, taking into account not only the literary, but its musical and religious aspects, as well
Tay-Sachs Disease
Presenting Symptom: Blind OU; Gangliosidic accumulation in the retina. Pathology: Perifoveal opacity. In Tay-Sachs Disease, a ganglioside accumulates in ganglion cells of the retina and brain, causing blindness and death within the first few years of life. The gangliosidic accumulation in the retina causes a white opacity that is most dense centrally, corresponding to the greater density of ganglion cells about the fovea but sparing the fovea itself which is devoid of ganglion cells. This results in a central cherry-red spot. The patient was a 10-month old Jewish boy who developed normally for the first few months of life but then retrogressed so that at the time the photograph was taken, he was blind and no longer able to sit up. The fundus shows the perifoveal opacity, a central cherry-red spot, and pale disc. Disease/ Diagnosis: Tay-Sachs Diseas
