THE DISCURSIVE CONSTRUCTION OF TRADITIONAL BELONGING AND SOCIAL CHANGE IN TV LOCAL BROADCASTING

    No full text
In the contemporary global societies, mass media are set on the intersection of several social changes that require persons to acknowledge their "cultural identities" as positioned across boundaries: persons can discover that meanings they live by come from the innumerable "Others", through which their "glocal self" is shaped (Brinkmann 2011). The cultural individuation process in the flow of socioeconomic-cultural changes weaves together the bonds of local tradition and the opportunities of the global openness and reflects the links between sense potentialities and communicative practices (Lucariello et al. 2004). In particular, local television channels can activate contracts of communication (Mininni, Ghiglione, 1995) based on a special identification clause among enunciating sense subjectivities, swinging between old traditions and new perspectives. The main object of our study is to investigate the peculiarities of Apulia local broadcasting as a favorite way to construct, transmit and renew several kinds of local culture. By the means of discursive strategies, local broadcasting organizes and puts into play its "credibility" (Gili, 2005) to identify, beliefs and values underlying the various forms of communitarian life (Mininni, 2007). We selected some TV local programs dealing with information, entertainment and advertising. We explored the registered TV texts through Diatextual Analysis (Mininni, 2005). The comparison among these results emphasize pathways based on "crossbreeding" as well as on "Polarization" of reality and identity construction strategies acted by TV programs. These contemporary tendencies take several functions: to intensify the national broadcasting formats, to encourage the dissemination of local cultures, to enhance the audience's loyalty

The discursive construction of self care: Confronting different cultures on the meaning of well-being [La costruzione discorsiva della cura di s: Culture a confronto sull'idea di benessere]

By adopting a qualitative perspective, this contribution aims at highlighting some occurrences within the communicative practices which are responsible for the subjective evaluations about psycho-physical well-being according to the expectations prescribed by the main scripts of self care. To this purpose the social representation of well-being conveyed by mass media has been compared with the conversational elaboration of this concept given by some privileged witnesses of the practices of self care. Actually, the social reality of subjective well-being has been anchored to the meanings expressed by a sample of customers and operators of some wellness centres who collaborated with the research, by giving their representation of the world through some in-depth interviews. The discursive data have been triangulated with the images of well-being and self care conveyed by mass media, both in its traditional format -two magazines specifically dedicated to the topic (Viver sani e belli e Star bene) - and in the format of virtual communication - two web sites dedicated to the topic, an Italian one (www.benessere.com) and an English one (www.thefitmap.com). The data have been ana-lysed by adopting a diatextual framework (Mininni, 1992; 2000; 2003a, 2003b) as to better highlight the interpretative repertoires (Potter e Wetherell, 1987) and the rhetorical formats, which give consistence to the discursive construction of subjective well-being

    Marxist Theories of Language

    No full text
The hinges of a Marxist consideration concern the links binding the language to the structure of society, to models of material praxis, and to forms of ideology. An evaluation of the relationship between Marxism and the sciences of language coincides with the overall judgment expressed by many scholars on the historical experience of the so-called 'real socialism': the questions on the agenda are relevant and unavoidable, but the answers given are, on the whole, misleading or disappointing. The questions posed by Marxism as an interpretive methodology of social relationships may be worded as follows: which linguistic arguments prove that 'man is the sum of social relationships?' How are the different systems of beliefs, socially shared knowledge, cultural values, and rules of a human community continuously rebuilt in his language? How do the ideal-typical needs for mutual understanding and the real contingencies of differentiation and social struggle weave together in the language? These queries question all the symbolic articulations connected with the difference between manual labor and intellectual work

A control approach for an identication problem associated to a strongly degenerate parabolic system with interior degeneracy

    No full text
We study an identification problem associated with a strongly degenerate parabolic evolution equation of the type yt − Ay = f(t, x), (t, x) ∈ Q := (0, T) × (0, L) equipped with Dirichlet boundary conditions, where T > 0, L > 0, and f is in a suitable L2 space. The operator A has the form A1y =(uyx)x, or A2y = uyxx, and strong degeneracy means that the diffusion coefficient u ∈ W1,∞(0,L) satisfies u(x) > 0 except for an interior point of (0, L) and 1/u ∉ L1(0, L). Since an identification problem related to A1 was studied in Fragnelli et al. (J. Evol. Equ., 2014), here we devote more attention to the identification problem of u when A = A2. In this setting new weighted spaces of L2-type must be considered. Our techniques are based on the minimization problem of a functional depending on u, provided that some observations are known. Optimality conditions are also given

The context of cultural reference is that of the urban countryside, considered as a possible source of open spaces and a public asset for the city and its citizens. The reference is also to the debate that the École Nationale Superieure du Paysage of Versailles has long been conducting, and which has proven to be a particularly fertile terrain for interpreting and planning periurban agricultural landscapes in some southern Italian contexts, and indeed in Mediterranean contexts in general. The author edited the Italian edition of Campagnes urbaines by Pierre Donadieu, conceiving it as a complex editorial project to introduce to the Italian readers those well structured reflections of the French Versailles school, from a long standing commitment on these issues, but also to build project implications of the vicinity countryside in the disciplinary debate in defining the project of the contemporary city. The curatorship consisted, in addition to text translation, in writing a long preface, developing a glossary of terms between agriculture and urban planning, and creating boards of french agrarian parks and the presence of a new essay by Donadieu as an upgrade text for Italian readers. Finally, new photographs were selected, inserting images of urban campaigns to help the reader in the Italian translation of the text and to implement it into the Italian culture. In recent years, architects, urban planners, landscape architects and environmentalists are questioning the nature and destiny of peri-urban agricultural areas. Unstable places, rapidly changing, where the environmental systems that are slowly organized and trained in relation to the economy and agricultural culture are falling apart; these not builded intervals are invested not only by processes of real estate development that tend to turn them into new suburbs, but also by new activities, new social practices and unexpected questions that challenge the classical categories of urban analysis (among others, urban-rural landscape-the city, the center- outskirts). New forms of urban agriculture suggest to reformulate the relationship between cities (figure) and rural (background), assigning it the value of natural infrastructure, and therefore a public good, and resource. All this is a correspondence in a widespread demand for new natural, which is reflected in the changes taking place in terms of behavior and consumption in the sphere of living and leisure

Commemorative acts as discursive resources of historical identity

Discourse plays a crucial role in determining how both persons and communities shape social reality and attribute meaning to experience (Edwards, 1997). This potential is mostly evident when the contended object of discourse is history itself, which is a peculiar area of the cultural mind. Hence, the discursive management of the collective tends to generate interpretations which in turn might mould personal and social identities. Sharing the spirit of the ‘‘innovations’’ brought about by cultural psychology (Valsiner, 2009), the present paper is intended to highlight how institutional and public discourses communicate different degrees of responsibility for the history of their own national group and, at the same time, how individuals construe historical identities with different degrees of guilt towards past events. Through a qualitative approach—the ‘‘diatextual analysis’’ (Mininni, 1992, 2001, 2005)—this paper proposes to investigate the rhetorical strategies adopted on occasion of some important commemorative events by the institutional spokesmen, as well as by the public opinion, to elaborate both positive and negative histories of their ingroup

Health under the telephone wire. Telephonic interaction between oncological patients and health workers | [Quando la salute è appesa a un filo. L'Interazione telefonica fra paziente oncologico e operatore sanitario]

The psycho-oncological literature highlighted the importance of temporal continuity and professional competence when it comes to the relationship between patients affected by cancer and health workers who attend to them. This research has analyzed, from a cultural and community psychology perspective as well as a psycho-semiotic perspective, some telephonic interactions that have taken place on a telephone counselling service, which is geared to patients undergoing home-based chemotherapeu-tic treatments. To this end we did an ethno-psychological observation (Freda, 2011; Angrosino, 2007) of the hospital department and have carried out 54 telephonic consultations subsequently analysed by means of the dia-textual analysis (Mininni, 2003). The analysis focus on the delegitimation felt by the health workers when it comes to taking charge of the patients; these feelings are linked to the ambivalence showed by the physicians with regard to the delegation of the patients themselves. By setting up a collaboration between the health workers who deal with the patients and the health personnel who set the therapeutic protocol it is possible to build up more professional responsibility as well as efficacy and efficiency for the whole institution while re-defining the quality of the service this provides
