Natural flavour conservation and soft CP violation in grand unified theories: A phenomenological SO(10) model with a low intermediate mass scale

    No full text
It is shown that the embedding in SO(10) of a recent approach ensuring natural flavor conservation and spontaneous CP violation in left-right-symmetric models is able to lead, with the minimal Higgs content and reasonable assumptions about Higgs-boson masses, to a low intermediate mass scale satisfying 0.234≤( sin^2 θ_W ) ≤0.226. In the scheme, the lower limit to the proton lifetime is rather near to the present experimental sensitivity and n↔ anti n oscillations are allowed with τ_n↔anti n=10^6-10^9 sec

CP violation through Higgs-boson exchange in left-right-symmetric models

    No full text
A chiral electroweak model which accounts for spontaneous CP breaking is proposed. Under the requirement of realistic quark mixing matrices and as a result of a detailed study of the Higgs potential, CP-violating relative phases among the vacuum expectation values of the scalars coupled to the fermions are seen to emerge. The strong CP problem is solved without any restrictive assumptions. The phenomenological implications of the neutral-kaon system are analyzed, and a new physics in the Higgs sector is proposed to render ‖ΔscrS‖=2 enhanced interactions consistent with a not too high value of parity-breaking scale

Symmetry-breaking patterns in left-right-symmetric models: How to ensure natural flavour conservation and a soft CP violation

    No full text
A detailed analysis of the symmetry-breaking patterns in left-right-symmetric models is performed, looking for a soft violation of CP and requiring the absence of Higgs-boson-induced flavor-changing neutral currents in the light-Higgs-boson sector. The difficulties typical of pseudomanifest left-right-symmetric theories in ensuring both properties are discussed. An alternative approach is proposed in which the Weinberg-Salam projection of the left-right model is naturally flavor conserving and CP is spontaneously violated in the manner of Weinberg without effects of Kobayashi-Maskawa phases
