Re: Nickel chromium and iron levels in the saliva of patients with simulated fixed orthodontic appliances
Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Eczema and Ozena due to Mercury Dental Amalgam
In 2000, a 27-year-old woman was seen in consultation at the our dental center because of amenorrhea, fatigue, and chronic (atrophic) rhinitis also termed ozena. Skin lesions (eczema) were present near her nose. She had 6 mercury-containing dental amalgam restorations. Mercury levels in saliva was assessed and revealed that there was a significant increased levels of mercury released from her dental amalgam surfaces. We started treatment with amalgam removal and then we performed a LTT-MELISA test to exclude the possibility of immunological sensitization to metals contained in mercury dental amalgams. She displayed an extreme allergy to Nickel [stimulation index (SI)]= 45.9, Titanium 4.2, Aluminum 3.8, Gold 2.8, respectively. The diagnosis of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis associated with hypothyroidism was established after further investigations. After amalgam-treatment removal, she achieve a remission of eczema, of ozena as well as chronic fatigue. Also, her serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels decreased over time within the reference range. On follow up at 10 years, she was still disease-free
