    Emilio Ghione and the Mask of Za La Mort

    This study aims to examine the cultural impact of Emilio Ghione's Za La Mort films (1914-1924) on Italian culture. These films constitute a significant Italian combination of several early cinema genres and sub-genres, such as the apache film, the traces of which have almost entirely disappeared. More broadly, the changing interpretations of Za La Mort figure allow us to understand wider shifts in Italian and European popular culture. The first chapter of the study considers the wealth of influences from European popular culture that Emilio Ghione merged into the apache films, such as the apache sub-culture in Paris. The second chapter of the study then reconstructs the Za La Mort filmography, most of which has now been lost, from film viewings and archival documents. The third chapter considers Emilio Ghione's Za La Mort novels and theatrical productions in the years 1922-1930, and Ghione's attempts to make Za La Mort a more Fascist and nationalistic figure. The fourth chapter considers the enduring figure of Za La Mort in Italian popular culture, especially in Raffaele Matarazzo's Fumeria D'Oppio and a 1940's fumetti series. The fifth chapter considers the audience reception of the Za La Mort films from the limited remaining evidence and, positioning the series between the Cinema of Attractions of the 1900s and the Classical Cinema of the mid-1920's, analyses how the Za La Mort films were constructed to please a predominantly working class audience that valued spectacular thrills and great acting performances over narrative consistency and stable characterisation. This research re-establishes the importance of one of Italian cinema's most important film-makers of the silent period, and his enduring importance as a popular cultural figure in Italy

    Large-signal device simulation in time- and frequency-domain: a comparison

    The aim of this paper is to compare the most common time- and frequency-domain numerical techniques for the determination of the steady-state solution in the physics-based simulation of a semiconductor device driven by a time-periodic generator. The shooting and harmonic balance (HB) techniques are applied to the solution of the discretized drift-diffusion device model coupled to the external circuit embedding the semiconductor device, thus providing a fully nonlinear mixed mode simulation. The comparison highlights the strong and weak points of the two approaches, basically showing that the time-domain solution is more robust with respect to the initial condition, while the HB solution provides a more rapid convergence once the initial datum is close enough to the solution itsel

    In this article, we discuss the accuracy of behavioral models in simulating the intermodulation distortion (IMD) of microwave GaN-based high-power amplifiers in the presence of strong electrothermal (ET) feedback. Exploiting an accurate self-consistent ET model derived from measurements and thermal finite-element method simulations, we show that behavioral models are able to yield accurate results, provided that the model identification is carried out with signals with wide bandwidth and large dynamics

    Starting from the compact conversion and cyclostationary pn diode noise model presented in the companion paper, we present an extensive validation based on comparisons with physics-based numerical simulations. Furthermore, we discuss the validity of two widely exploited system-oriented cyclostationary noise modeling approaches, based on the modulation of small-signal stationary noise spectra. We demonstrate that care must be exerted in the choice of the modulation scheme, unless the intrinsic diode noise is purely white, in which case a simple modulated shot noise approach can provide, with proper inclusion of parasitics, satisfactorily accurate results

    Starting from the well known low-injection approximation, a closed form, analytical compact model is derived for the small-signal (SS) and forced quasi-periodic operation of junction diodes. The model determines the small-signal and conversion admittance matrix of the device as a function of the applied (dc or periodic-time varying) bias. Noise characteristics, in both the stationary (SS) and cyclostationary cases, are also evaluated by means of a Green's function approach
