Direct observation of a surface resonance state and surface band inversion control in black phosphorus
We report a Cs-doping-induced band inversion and the direct observation of a surface resonance state with an
elliptical Fermi surface in black phosphorus (BP) using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. By selectively
inducing a higher electron concentration (1.7 × 1014 cm−2) in the topmost layer, the changes in the Coulomb
potential are sufficiently large to cause surface band inversion between the parabolic valence band of BP and a
parabolic surface state around the point of the BP Brillouin zone. Tight-binding calculations reveal that band
gap openings at the crossing points in the two high-symmetry directions of the Brillouin zone require out-of-plane
hopping and breaking of the glide mirror symmetry. Ab initio calculations are in very good agreement with the
experiment if a stacking fault on the BP surface is taken into account. The demonstrated level of control over the
band structure suggests the potential application of few-layer phosphorene in topological field-effect transistors
Millennial Variability in an Idealized Ocean Model: Predicting the AMOC Regime Shifts
A salient feature of paleorecords of the last glacial interval in the North Atlantic is pronounced millennial variability, commonly known as Dansgaard–Oeschger events. It is believed that these events are related to variations in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and heat transport. Here, the authors formulate a new low-order model, based on the Howard–Malkus loop representation of ocean circulation, capable of reproducing millennial variability and its chaotic dynamics realistically. It is shown that even in this chaotic model changes in the state of the meridional overturning circulation are predictable. Accordingly, the authors define two predictive indices which give accurate predictions for the time the circulation should remain in the on phase and then stay in the subsequent off phase. These indices depend mainly on ocean stratification and describe the linear growth of small perturbations in the system. Thus, monitoring particular indices of the ocean state could help predict a potential shutdown of the overturning circulation
International Workshop Analytic and geometric theory of the Camassa-Holm equation and integrable systems (Bologna, 22-25 September 2004).
The workshop was held at CIRAM as part of the GNFM-INdAM research program "Onde nonlineari, struttura tau e geometria delle varietà invarianti: il caso della gerarchia di Camassa-Holm". The workshop was also partially supported by ESF research program MISGAM (Method of Integrable Systems, Geometry and Applied Mathematics). About 30 researchers presented their recent achievements in the theory of integrable systems with special attention to topics related to the CH hierarchy and its generalizations.

Conference on Riemann-Hilbert Problems, Integrability and Asymptotics
A Conference on Riemann-Hilbert Problems, Integrability and Asymptotics is being organized at SISSA within the activities of the Marie Curie FP6 RTN ENIGMA (European Network In Geometry, Mathematical Physics and Applications), the ESF Research Programme MISGAM (Methods of Integrable Systems in Geometry and Applied Mathematics), in collaboration with the Italian MIUR 2004 research project Geometrical Methods in the Theory of Nonlinear Waves and Applications, run by the SISSA Mathematical Physics Sector.
Riemann Hilbert problems and asymptotic expansions lie at the crossroads of the three main research areas of the ENIGMA network and of the MISGAM project: Geometry, Integrable Systems, and Applications. The aim of the Trieste Conference is to establish the state of the art in this interdisciplinary, historically deeply rooted but still extremely lively subject, as well as point out new directions of research.

Comparing algorithms and criteria for designing Bayesian conjoint choice experiments.
The recent algorithm to find efficient conjoint choice designs, the RSC-algorithm developed by Sándor and Wedel (2001), uses Bayesian design methods that integrate the D-optimality criterion over a prior distribution of likely parameter values. Characteristic for this algorithm is that the designs satisfy the minimal level overlap property provided the starting design complies with it. Another, more embedded, algorithm in the literature, developed by Zwerina et al. (1996), involves an adaptation of the modified Fedorov exchange algorithm to the multinomial logit choice model. However, it does not take into account the uncertainty about the assumed parameter values. In this paper, we adjust the modified Fedorov choice algorithm in a Bayesian fashion and compare its designs to those produced by the RSC-algorithm. Additionally, we introduce a measure to investigate the utility balances of the designs. Besides the widely used D-optimality criterion, we also implement the A-, G- and V-optimality criteria and look for the criterion that is most suitable for prediction purposes and that offers the best quality in terms of computational effectiveness. Review of the Monograph by V. B. Bezgin «The Daily Life of a Russian Peasant Women of the Late Empire Period»

Б. Безгина, посвященной истории повседневной жизни русской крестьянки периода поздней империи. Отмечено, что это одно из первых научных исследований периода конца XIX – начала XX в., посвященных данной проблеме. Охарактеризована источниковая база монографии, раскрывается степень научной изученности темы, представленной автором. В монографии В. Б. Безгина изображена повседневность русской крестьянки на разных этапах ее жизни, описаны все стороны быта и крестьянской женской культуры. В рецензии подчеркивается, что В. Б. Безгин убедительно доказал влияние модернизационных процессов на русскую деревню не только в положительном плане, но и в отрицательном. Разрушение традиционных устоев общины, влияние города на деревню во многом изменили общественный статус крестьянки в семье и сельской общине. Поведение женщины стало более раскрепощенным и независимым, повысилось ее правосознание. Но под влиянием процессов модернизации также наблюдается рост преступлений, совершенных над женщинами. Растут девиации в поведении женщин и женская преступность в деревне. Отмечено стремление автора раскрыть природу семейного насилия и насильственных действий по отношению к крестьянке. В. Б. Безгин раскрыл роль и место женщины в крестьянской семье и сельском мире. The review provides the results of the analysis and the characteristics of the monograph devoted to the history of the daily life of the Russian peasant woman of the late Empire period. It is noted that this is one of the first scientific studies of the period of the late XIX – early XX century, devoted to this problem. The source database of the monograph is given, the degree of the scientific study of the topic presented by the author is revealed. The monograph by V. B. Bezgin
depicts the everyday life of a Russian peasant woman at different stages of her life, describes all aspects of everyday life and peasant women’s culture. It is emphasized that V. B. Bezgin has convincingly proved the impact of modernization processes on the Russian countryside not only positively but also negatively. The destruction of the traditional foundations of the community, the influence of the city on the village in many ways changed the social status of the peasant woman in the family and rural community. The woman’s behavior became more relaxed and independent, and her sense of justice increased. But under the influence of modernization processes, there is also an increase in crimes committed against women. Deviations in the behavior of women and female crime in the village are growing. V. B. Bezgin revealed the role and place of women in the peasant family and the rural world

NANO- AND MICROSTRUCTURES FOR THIN-FILM EVAPORATION-A REVIEW
Evaporation from thin films is a key feature of many processes, including energy conversion, microelectronics cooling, boiling, perspiration, and self-assembly operations. The phase change occurring in these systems is governed by transport processes at the contact line where liquid, vapor, and solid meet. Evidence suggests that altering the surface chemistry and surface topography on the micro-and the nanoscales can be used to dramatically enhance vaporization. The 2013 International Workshop on Micro- and Nanostructures for Phase-Change Heat Transfer brought together a group of experts to review the current state-of-the-art and discuss future research needs. This article is focused on the thin-film evaporation panel discussion and outlines some of the key principles and conclusions reached by that panel and the workshop attendees.
