A Metaethical Study of Simone Weil’s Notion of Attention Through Critical Practical Analogy

    No full text
This research provides an example of art practice employed within a metaethical framework by addressing Simone Weil‘s ethical notion of attention. In this thesis, 'metaethics‘ is defined as a second order inquiry into first order questions of normative ethics, more specifically, an inquiry into the metaphysical and epistemological premises of Weil‘s discourse on the ethical value of attention. On one hand, I demonstrate how Weil‘s notion of attention can expand the scope of art so as to include metaethics. On the other hand, I use art to widen the current knowledge of Weilian attention. The research projects described and analysed in this thesis are predicated on a method which I designate 'critical practical analogy‘; this is an analogy which includes art practical operations for the purpose of critical investigation. This method subsumes both theoretical and practical inquiries. I used two analogies: – Normative analogy compares (a) the dualistic relation that Weil postulates between agent and reality in her discourse on attention to (b) the relation that I postulate between my agency through observational drawing and the object of observation. The analogy operates by using Weil‘s assertions on attention normatively in observational drawing. – Imaginal analogy compares (a) Weil‘s use of tautology and contradiction in her arguments for ethical attention to (b) tautology and contradiction considered as argument forms. The analogy operates by giving aesthetic presence to these forms, i.e. by turning them into images through artworks. The analogies obtained the following outcomes: – The normative projects afford a practical knowledge of Weilian attention by interpreting it as an ethical practice of detachment. The projects also demonstrate that, notwithstanding Weil‘s transcendent view of truth, such a practice of detachment is compatible with a subjective notion of truth. – By capitalising on the non-propositional mode of representation which is typical of visual art, the imaginal projects engender a scepticism which favours dialogue and values questions as positive research results. The outcomes indicate the following implications for visual arts practice: – The outcomes of the normative projects demonstrate how contemporary artists who regard notions of universal truth with scepticism need not necessarily disavow ethical intentions in their practice. – Due to its propositional character, theoretical metaethics can reach an impasse from which it can only point discursively to the limits of language. The outcomes of the imaginal projects evidence that art can move beyond these limits non-propositionally. The use of critical practical analogy also indicates a methodological implication for art practical, interdisciplinary research. Critical practical analogy could provide artists with both a heuristic research tool and a template for articulating a discursive representation of art practice which both acknowledges the non-linearity and indirectness of practice-led research and the need for interdisciplinary intelligibility

    Simone de Beauvoir e Portugal

    No full text
ABSTRACT: The name Simone de Beauvoir is frequently associated to the struggle of feminism and to the existentialist philosophy. Endowed with a strong personality driven by social and political ideals clearly defined, this writer, with a multifaceted career, inspired vived reactions through her writing project and her personal positions taken throughout her life. We got used to see her involved on the defense of the most basic human rights and we witnessed the way her engagement conditioned her relation with Portugal. Bearing in mind that this work has the objective of illustrating the several aspects of Simone de Beauvoir’s relation with our country, we approached, with that purpose, the visits made by this author to our country, revealing the different aspects that involved them and, at the same time, establishing a parallel with other French writers who visited Portugal and wrote about it, and the image of portugal that her sister, Hèlène de Beauvoir, created, not only, through her paintings, but also, through her book, Souvenirs. The analysis of the impact that her visits had on the portuguese regular press, contributed to a better understanding of the relation the writer had with our country. Concerning the representation of Portugal created by her writing, we focused specially on the novel Les Mandarins, not only due to the controversy it caused, but also due to the notoriety it reached and to the fact that, in this novel, the portuguese episode assumes greater relevance. Besides this one, we analyzed other works like La Force des choses and La cérémonie des adieux, always establishing a correlation with the other works of the writer. This dissertation wishes, by these means, to cast some light on how Simone de Beauvoir saw our country, demystifying her vision, as well as showing its complexity

Constant monitoring is paramount in order to detect the criticalities and improve the results of the deceased donation process. Concomitant with the institution of a regional transplantation service authority--Organizzazione Toscana Trapianti--in 2003, Tuscany adopted a program of quality assurance of the deceased donation process by compulsory reporting of all encephalic deaths from local intensive care units to the regional transplant office in Florence. The indicators we adopted were the efficiency of deceased donor (DD) identification, expressed as the ratio of encephalic deaths (ED) to total deaths with encephalic lesions (EL) (ie, ED/EL); the efficiency of DD reporting, expressed as the ratio of reported potential DD (RPDD) to total ED (ie, RPDD/ED); the efficacy of the DD process, as the ratio between actual DD (ADD) to total ED (ie, ADD/ED); the conversion rate; the percent of opposition to donation; and the incidence of DD maintenance failures. Data were collected prospectively, stratified by regional hospital consortia (Aziende Sanitarie Locali) and compared with international benchmarks. In the period 2003-2006 the mean efficiency of DD identification was 48.3%+/-4.4% (range 42.6%-53.2%); the mean efficiency of DD reporting was 95.2%+/-2.5% (range 92.5%-98.5%); the mean efficacy of the deceased donation process was 51.8%+/-2.4% (range 48.6%-54.4%); the mean conversion rate was 59.6%+/-2.2% (range 57.6%-62.7%); the mean opposition rate was 31.9%+/-1.1% (range 30.6%-33.2%); and the incidence of DD maintenance failure was 5%+/-2.9% (range 2.2%-8.7%). The breakdown analysis revealed wide interhospital variability in terms of efficiency of DD identification (from a low of 25% to a high of 80%); efficacy of the donation process (from a low of 22% to a high of 79%); and conversion rate (from a low of 29% to a high of 79%). Our results highlight that the donation process gets started in about 50% of eligible cases. Further strategies are favored to address this critical area
